I'm not sure what report you are referring to but my original comment referred to the reseach by Prof.Mehrabian that is often inaccurately quoted (and known as the 'Mehrabian Myth' when it is, regarding relative importance of facial and body expression, tone and inflection and words. They do not represent the conclusions reached by him and so I was pointing out their inaccuracy as they are often quoted by those who 'train' people in presentation skills and 'body language'- another fallacy..
You say 55% of communication is through facial and body expression, 38% is thru tone + inflection of the voice. If you are going to put in throwaway stats that in reality don't make sense, accept it is going to be questioned. Don't waste time commenting? Why allow comments if you are not willing to be questioned? Is your video 'absolute' the 'one truth'? No, it includes statements that don't make sense + are used in a way that the original researcher says is not what the research concluded.
@CAOSConflictMgmt If you will bother to check the report you're reading, you will "clearly" see that their study was using only "one" word. I have been in business for over 33 years, and trust me, I have seen salespeople who were very knowledgeable, but had poor tone, inflection and body language and failed. The study you are referring to is a "horrible" example, and one that you should really reconsider before making comments.
Great example of the misrepresentation of the Mehrabian myth regarding the level to which words are part of what is communicated. REALLY, only 7% is down to the words?? Professor Mehrabian himself who did the research that is (mis)quoted here says he cringes whenever he hears it. So, how about you just use facial expressions and different voice tones without words - you'd still get 93% across?? I don't think so. Offer your seminar attendees a 7% discount if you do it without words - I dare ya!
@CAOSConflictMgmt For crying out loud, you missed my point totally on this video and example. Please don't waste people's time commenting if you cannot "listen," and learn! Geez! Nobody is talking about not using your voice. It's about HOW YOU USE YOUR VOICE. PLEASE! I normally don't reply to such useless comments, but this is one I could not pass up.
As a former Retail Store Service and Repair representative for Sprint Nextel I did noticed that customers prefered waiting hours to be helped rather than calling customer service due to the fact that they were not able to see the representatives body language.
Being concise over the phone goes a long way because it cuts conversations short and prevents multiple questions.
