I can remeber being about 10 or 11 when this joint came out. I remember going to the mall ( Annapolis mall in Annapolis Md.) and they had this huge video screen in the one of the arcade rooms ( there were two arcades) and they would blast this song. We loved it because it had that Go Go feel and made us feel like we were old enough to hang out lol Much Respect!!!!
I wasn't a 20 something in 86 so I never knew UNTIL TONIGHT that this song uses stuff from Transformers TV show from 80s. Saw Trouble Funk at Bogarts in Long Beach CA around 1986...talked to the band,,,Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers was there and since I was in a band I kinda knew him too. I remember we both were into "Testify" by The Parliaments at the time..it was new for us white kids then now its a well deserved classic. The T Funk guys signed my jacket...it definitely did not suck
I'm gonna say this. the younger rappers should learn from the older Mcs because there was no violence and X-rated lyrics back in the day. And if it was, you didn't hear about it. And the older MCs could learn from the young rappers as well. BUT I feel that the younger rappers STILL could clean up their lyrics and do better music. I really feel that Hip Hop back then was a WHOOOOOLE lot better. Everything now a days sound the same damn way. It sucks.
chillin' > 'illin... this guy made both the theme song for basketball and Transformers... and the first "dissing other rappers" song. Pretty much a legend.
At least you should show repect to such a great rythm section with genius like Alonzo Robinson, Dennys Sterling and Tim Tee Bone David, of Trouble Funk. It is go go music, the most marginalized music in US. To see it as if it was kind of a marketing game, even considering Blow, is a bad view.
This was basically an attack on RUN-DMC as they had basically made Kurtis's style extinct at this point. It wasn't a very effective attack, as this album and his next didn't sell at all. I've never liked Blow's music aside from the Breaks. Way too many breakdowns.
@Blackson187 Here's another thing to consider about Kurtis Blow. He was a "DISCO RAPPER." He came from the D.J HOLLYWOOD crowd as opposed to the anti-establishment b-boy movement of KOOL HERC, so the jury is still out on whether Hollywood and his counterparts are even justified in being considered hip hop. Blow was so much into the disco r&b scene, it's no surprise that one of his biggest singles was "DAYDREAMING." That record was garbage.
@21sttnmemphis...Naw, this rap was done when all those guys you mentioned were babies. He wasn't referring to them. Plus, there's way better rappers than Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, Drake & Rick Ross.
@21sttnmemphis Yep that what kinda makes this timeless! Telling the Crappers many made the way for them to be here but this just pissing it away bragging they're hood with ho's
His claim to fame is being the first commercial rapper.
Kurtis Blow didn't pave the way for shit. He just had the look and personality that drew Mercury Records towards him, he was non threatening, unlike Grandmaster Caz, Easy L.G and Ramazelee(RIP), whom were considered too "urban" for the record companies.
He should have never said anything about Run-DMC.
@saj8 OK yeah he was the commercial type back then. But you know there are more Crap rappers on the radio than the real deal and they try to make a name for themselves by dissing a pioneer. Also now it's the other way around, being more hood and claiming they are the first at this game is what's selling now. Some even make up words and noises just to make it rhyme.
As for RUN DMC, I still have my leather blazer, and time to order aother pair of my Adidas.
@JEDI7ACEN On the real, there will never be another golden era(1984-1992) in hip-hop. It's an era that I wouldn't EXPECT anyone to recreate or try to match. It stands on its' own and always will.
New artists do not need to try to top the old great music. they just need to make great NEW music. And a lot of them won't do that. They're making songs that people might like, but don't really care about, because the fans don't really care about them as artists.
@JEDI7ACEN Also, it really lies in the hands of the OLDER artists. Dudes who controlled the game allowed it to get wack because of how THEY did things. And the saddest thing about it is that their attitude is only gonna rub off on the kids. So when you have people in their 20s and 30s not giving a crap about the quality of the music, then what does that tell the people listening to it? It tells them that being a good rapper doesn't matter as long is the paycheck is big.
@saj8 Well put. Take cheap stuff and make as much money from it as you can. It is what it is. Well thanks for the sensible/logical replies. Maybe see you on the next video.
If there was ever any doubt that Rap is an extension of the Funk, this should destroy it. Harlem Rap meets DC Go Go (supplied by Troublefunk). Amazing track. Other than Kurtis' rhyme flow, this track could hold its own with contemporary releases.
Song is original, I'll give it that, and the last verse is actually good, except leads to "I'm chilling!" in a damn cheesy way, however I really LOVE the "To the bridge!" ending as it is seriously too classic for me to comprehend.

Eli porter got his rap facial expressions from this guy. He tried to imitate his flow as well, but it wasn't a feat that young Eli could accomplish.
