i find it ironic how they use maytag dryers in the background when the song is about working hard but the maytag repairman is always sitting there doing nothing
@greenorange75 That's his classic Gibson ES-355. I think in 2005 or so Gibson came out with the Alex Lifeson model that looks just like it but it's ridiculously overpriced at $3500.
@gitardoofus I was thinking the same "it's too slow...". But by being slower, it makes possible for Lifeson to do the solo at same pace than in the studio version with longer bars, meaning more space to express... however the bridge sucks bad...
@Erandros I hear you about the solo - we're probably not worthy of questioning anything these guys do, though. Maybe it was the moment, mood, whatever. I know how I like to play this tune, and how I've heard it since forever, so maybe I'm biased a little. Ya gotta love Alex's guitar stuff no matter the 'version' - or the song -and I'm proud to be a Rush fan. They're like nobody else - or what?!
wow, after 36 plus concerts, and dozens of vids watched, I have really never seen Alex get out of tune! He obviously had Low E string issues, which you can barely hear at around 1"00... But then high E string problems too ! Wow. He had to physically tune it at least twice as well. Which is unheard of. It throws him off playing wize as well.
@kennyplay Sounds like an issue with his guitar tech?; maybe it was a new promo version for him to play (gift from Gibson), new strings, or he just needed to lube the nut a bit. Alex even semi-out-of-tune still kicks butt on the other 75% of guitarists that don't deserve to carry his gear to the truck!
ok.. this great great man is definately not 20... if someone was listening to this exact recording for the first time on CD unfamiliar to the time.. you would have sworn the singer was about 20.. Geddy is amazing..
I agree about Hendryx. He was one of the original innovators. He was great. But Lifeson is also one of the great guitar players. Forget Rolling Stone. We can make our own list!
@itlnstln35 From what ive heard, Geddy uses the P.A. instead of stage amps now so he decided to put something on the stage with him so he puts dryers there as a joke.
Yeah.. Geddy has mucked around saying he likes to do laundry on stage and stuff like that.. but since his bass is passive he plugs straight into the P.A. its a great ida if you knnow what your doing... and because of that he didn't need amps on stage.. therefore making teh stage set out look uneven. so he got old style equipment.. he uses dryers on this tour.. but he uses different props.. last tour they did he had cook ovens and actual chefs were hired to cook chicken.
Here's the thing, it is impossible to say that one guitarist or another is any better or worse than another unless they play the same part in the band. You wouldn't compare a lead guitarist to the only guitarist in the band. Therefore, any lists, which shouldn't exist at all, should be be in accordance to what part they played in the band.
What happened to their luster :( geddy sings really high pitched when they play live for some reason. It's actualy quite anoyying. Why can't they play with soul like back in the day arghhhh
VH is great and unique but Lifeson is much more dynamic and accomplished as well as progressive. One should not compare musicians but since you did I had to respond.
Fuck rolling shit. KURT COBAIN in the top 20? Come on! Jimi Hendrix number 1? Mega points to burnsmay on his comment. Couldn't of said it better myself. Rolling stone doesn't understand Rush. Too difficult for them!
@TheMapexDrummer11 as an experienced guitar player Hendrix deserves his spot as number one, his music is complex, revolutionary at the time, he also sang while playing and on top of that out of his mind on drugs and completely self taught. although i agree kurt cobain shouldn't even be on the list. That and Alex lifeson defintely deserved to be higher on their list.
@TheMapexDrummer11 Hendrix definitely deserves his spot as number 1. If you can't get that then you don't know jack about the meaning of rock and roll. Its about freedom and just letting go, and plain talent. Hendrix made the music that communicated that better than anybody ever has up to date. I agree Alex and Brian May should be way higher, but don't knock the guitar god himself just to get your point across.
@TheMapexDrummer11 Seriously, maybe one could justify calling Cobain a good songwriter (I'm not a huge fan), but to call him a great guitarist is a stretch. His playing was technically sloppy and seemingly uninspired. There's a reason why all Nirvana songs are what beginners in guitar learn, including myself 4 years ago.
Rolling Stone gives these guys such a hard deal, and an other magazine put Malcolm Young (Rhythm guitar for AC/DC) in a top 100 guitarists and not Alex Lifeson because I quote "Malcolm plays strums so hard only half a pick is left after every song." What a load of nonsense! Really hope there'll be another album and tour.
Keep in mind Malcolm Young originally played lead guitar when AC/DC first formed. If you've ever heard his leads you would know how good he really is. As for Rolling Stone, that's nothing but a corporate rag with zero music credibility these days. I canceled my subscription to that cat box liner in the early 90's after I counted 21 ads before the first story.
@burnsmay The reason why that they aren't accepted into the HoF, is that, They don't deserve rush! Rush has gotta be the most intelligent band I've seen, and my dad introduced the band to me about 10 years ago haha. The lyrics are genius, considering Niel is a genius.
@burnsmay I've always thought that Rolling Stone magazine was an overrated bunch of nonsense that people have given this undeserved status to regarding musical judgment. To no like Rush is to say something about one's sophistication musically.
@burnsmay i hate to burst your bubble but rush had an entire article about them in the july 10-24 issue of rolling stone back in 2008, a couple of weeks before the end of the 2008 leg of the snakes and arrows tour. The issue number was 1056/1057.
they put malcolm in the top hundred for the rhythm he plays, he's not a lead guitar player, but he is a damn good player who has shaped rock music and many guitar players styles. Rush are awesome too may i add.
hey BiggestMettalicafan, I also love old stuff like you and Im only 13! My mom says "I never thought my child would be obsessed with Rush, The Beatles, and Aerosmith!" lol I recognize great musicians like this. oh, and I also love Mettalica, but isnt obsesed! I cn tell you love them more than I do!

Live young, listen old man. Those are/will be the most talented rock bands to ever grace us with their mindblowing tunes. Only couple I see left out are The Stones, Hendrix, and Floyd. Still, amazing taste in music there. I wish our generation would get their fucking heads out of what the media deems "popular."
Lmao, I should've put a comma in there. I mean live young, listen old, man. Music wise the 60s were pure brilliance. Anything until about 1990 and then it steadily declined to what we have now. I just can't stand those wannabe gangsters our age that support the talentless yet marketable cRap music artists ... that and country music lmao
Hmm...correct comments here, the guitar's somewhat out of tune. Also they took the verses at a reeaallly slow tempo, wonder what's up with that? The bridge/solo sections were about the same tempo as the recording.
Slowing a song down can give a better feel. Not ever rock song has to be fast people. and they sometimes have to spread the their songs out to use time..the full length. If they're setlist exceeds the alotted time they will raise the tempo. LIVE SHOWS ARE USUALLY DIFFERENT THEN STUDIO ALBUMS!!
eh i guess. I like it this way because it shows more talent through out the years. In this version Geddy is singing like..really singing...and slowing the song down allows him to sing like that(faster songs call for rushed songs) well i donno whay they do it....im jus stating my opinion as a musican on an amazing band. And Lee's voice has been deeper for like 20 years no this is nothing new
Used to see Rush play at the Electric Ballrom in Atlanta back in the 70's. These guys are one of the best bands in the history of music IMO. Long may they rock!
yes. they had him on their first album "Rush". Then before they started touring he quit because he didnt want the touring life. Then they held auditions and picked up Neil Peart for the tour. Neil Peart plays on the next album "Fly By Night"
I know what you mean. Obviously Geddy can't do his high voice as well as used to... I like this version, but if you don't thats cool. It's all just one big opinion.
Alex is really struggling with keeping the White Lady in tune throughout this performance... kept it all together though.. great stuff... thanks for posting bones :-)

Used to see Rush play at the Electric Ballrom in Atlanta back in the 70's. These guys are one of the best bands in the history of music IMO. Long may they rock!

Didnt a guy called John Rutsey play drums on the album with this song on?
pump35 2 years ago
yes. they had him on their first album "Rush". Then before they started touring he quit because he didnt want the touring life. Then they held auditions and picked up Neil Peart for the tour. Neil Peart plays on the next album "Fly By Night"

Peart's drums are amazing on this one!

i never said they were not. It's just geddy lee's vocals sound off and it's too slow.
crazyzach5 2 years ago
DOUBLE BLASPHEMY !!!
just kidding'man, but you give Geddy a break, his age has something to do with his present singing!
Ph3L1z14n0 2 years ago
no he sings fine in his other songs but in this one i just don't like the way he sings in this one. its a matter of opinion
crazyzach5 2 years ago
I know what you mean. Obviously Geddy can't do his high voice as well as used to... I like this version, but if you don't thats cool. It's all just one big opinion.

Is it just me or does Neil play the drums differently here than in Rush in Rio?
rushringleader 3 years ago
Well it is a different show.....
BIGREDjaw 3 years ago
I know, its just that Rush is usually very consistent night to night. I believe Neil played whole sections differently in this compared to Rio
rushringleader 3 years ago
I think this is a song that neil tends to improvise and jam on alot more than anything else.
