27 Jan 2012 and I have just discovered Shawn. Where the bloody hell have I been and why have I been denied years of enjoying her music. Gonna make amends this evening by downloading as much as I can. Buggeritalltohell.
On the plus side of course she is wonderful. God bless.
Saw her do this live about 12 yrs ago @ Lilith Fair Toronto...liked her best of all over Cheryl Crow, Sarah McLaughlin,,etc..because her set was wicked....
Saw hwe do this live about 10 yrs ago @ Lilith Fair Toronto...liked her best of all over Cheryl Crow, Sarah McLaughlin,,etc..because her set was wicked....
I only started to re-listen to her on youtube. Before I only knew the studio stuff. True artists you can see all the different variations of life and emotions live. Some musicians you would rather hear the CD studio version because they just try to replicate just that.
She will be a singer and songwriter of all seasons. I like hearing change! She is Awsome.
I go to her shows whenever I get the chance. She is brilliant in as a writer, as a musical composer, as a guitarist, as a person. She has successfully channelled her personal angst into music that reaches everyone and acts as a balm to our common miseries.
Shawn Colvin is a voice you can never forget. I remember the first time I heard her on the radio. I had to pull the car over and just listen. She is my hero.
She is so talented and has such a beautiful, edgy voice. This is one of the songs that inspired me to start playing the guitar, so I will always love it.
It is a pity some folks have to ruin a nice thread about this womans music and use this space for rude comments. But this is life and the more nice things i can say about Shaun Colvins music than perhaps it will drive the rude marks further down the page and off. Then we can begin to warm up the space.
I love her. She is so real, so talented. Her songs are so moving. She has tapped into a true gift, which is the greatest blessing any of us can ask for.
She's a great player and I love her songs. She plays Martins. She can come play my Martin D18 anytime. I'm still waiting for her to come over. Heh heh. :)
I came across a Shawn Colvin song today "I don't know why" and was quite taken by it. I searched some more and came upon "Sunny", which I realized I heard a lot in the past, but never really listened to the lyrics. So after a careful listen, here is my take. Sounds like Sunny is a woman not very happy with her life, probably in a daze as a result of pain inflicted by others, and is on the verge of doing something drastic thru fire, either as payback or just a way to end it all.
and I feel you, if I've had a bad day I look forward to coming home and listening to Shawn to just cry and release whatever emotion I may have bottled up inside of myself.
And actually, Shawn wrote this song about the cover of A Few Small Repairs. It's a painting by her friend Julie SPeed, a painter based in Austin, TX.
Shawn's nothing short of amazing.
I'll be seeing her in Atlanta exactly 2 weeks from today and I'm THRILLED and in utter disbelief:)
Shawn Colvin ROCKS ! She's been in my top 5 consistently for more than 20 years - ever since Steady On. Thank God for this style of music - it's fantastic story telling.
she is a very good musician as are others in different fields and no one should be judged on what we like. oh and oppinions are like assholes.... everyone has one!
Wow - her voice is unbelievable, but the way she just delivers the whole story is really the best. This wasn't one of my favorites by SC until I saw this. Looking for more live stuff by her...
If you are talking about the Abbey Road sessions, check out nerina palott(idaho). . . . if you like this . . .you will love that. . . perfection to look at and listen to !. enjoy
I remember her playing her music in the clubs Like Merlins down at Southern Illinois University during the early to mid 1970's. I was a music major there at the time too. Even Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows were another group that became big. Good years back then that produced excellent musicians. She is living proof.
I guess it's more of a documentary...the slightly smaller guitar must be her "signature" model D-28 which isn't as bouncy as her old D-28...think what I reacted to was a Martha Stewart moment when she said she felt "right"...it's nice to see another piece of her personality. I wish someone would do a full documentary on her life/development.
Oh no! It was bound to happen...the packaging attempts by well meaning handlers/consultants to boost sales but it will alienate the hard core original audience that's grown with her. Where's the booming, ringing, inspired, driving D-28? The vocals were flat to say
the least and separated from the emotion that she usually goes within to connect with. Love her dearly regardless...thanks for the clip.
maybe i'm proving your point here, but i had never heard anything by Shawn previously, until i saw this last night, and i thought this was absolutely stunning. I'm now on a mission to collect the entire back catalogue. I feel gutted to have missed out for so long! As i say, maybe i'm proving your point, by boosting sales, but still, surely that's a good thing?

Shawn always seems a little awkward when she is talking but when she is singing and playing that
guitar of hers, she is awsome.
Loved her since I found out who she was. This clip is excellent.
