  • In 1946 I travelled as a small boy with my family on the two-funnelled RMS Mauretania from Capetown to Liverpool. We were told it was the third largest liner in the world at that time (after the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth). It was a magnificent liner and that wonderful voyage to England after the war is a memory I will cherish to my life's end!

  • Great film of life aboard Maurentaina, with a nice glimps of Aquitania too. Thanks

  • I don't if I will ever get used to the idea of scrapping. But it doesn't matter, I prefer to think of their Beauty! OHH! Mauretania. You are so beautiful.

  • Look at the Mauretania! OHHH! She so beautiful. I would love to sail on her. Mauretania was believe that she was a relief Liner for the Queens when one of them was in drydock.

  • This isn't the Mauretania,

    It's the Aquatania,

Mauretania was scrapped in 1935, Aquatania look's similar,

    but a bit larger,

    Aquatania was scrapped in 1950,

  • @kirkconway Hi there, if you'll read through the comments you see this has been discussed. This is the Mauretania 2, which was simply called Mauretania.

  • @kirkconway Also, some of the confusion may stem from the shot of Aquitania at the beginning where she is docked as our photographer sails out aboard Mauretania. And finally, I doubt an amateur filmmaker would go to all the trouble to make his or her own title cards identifying the ship as the Mauretania if it weren't.

  • I love the music. Pouvre Aquitania, would have been better if sank. Better yet capsize & sank enroute to the scrapyard like SS Poseidon. I read that the paino almost fell though the floor in 1948.

  • Oh! Would I love to sailed on Mauretania in 1948 to New York!

  • Adoro al Mauretania...

  • The boat deck reminds me so much of the QUEEN MARY. And doesn't the young guy at the beginning with the slick hair remind you of Leonardo DiCaprio?

  • The MAURETANIA was scrapped in 1937

  • The first Mauretania, yes. There were two. I think it was covered in earlier comments on this same video.

  • The first MAURETANIA was scrapped in 1935 along with the OLYMPIC. Sad it had to happen like that.

  • The liner that appears on :37 is the Cunard Aquitania, so this film was made during the first sailings of the new "Mauretania" in summer of 1939 before the war started in Sept of that year. The "ship beautiful" Aquitania was scrapped in 1950.

  • Thanks for you comment. The filmmaker shot titles which were included in the film, and they identified the time period as 1948. So that's curious indeed!

  • Actually, this is likely from 1948. Aquitan ia was released from gov service by that point and was back in peacetime colors. She appears to be at Southampton's Western Docks and this is where she operated from on her immigration service to Canada from 1948-1949.

  • Ehm... that is the Mauretania I of 1907, because that ship has 4 steamstacks. The Mauretania II form 1939 has only 2 steamstacks, so it couldn't be the Mauretania II on this videotape !

  • Sailed to Europe on Mauretania 2 in 1956 and have never stopped loving ships since then. Thanks for the nice memories.

  • OOH! I didn't know there was a Mauretania 2!!?! When was she scrapped?

  • she was sold for scrap in 1965 :(

  • *This* is the Mauretania 2 (1938-65). Mauretania 1 (1908-35) was the sister ship to the il-fated Lusitania, the one that was sunk by a U-boat in 1915.

AFAIK all the "commoner" non-Queen Cunarders did get scrapped. Out of this group, I wish the Aquitania would have been spared, but she did have a service life almost as long as QE2.

  • Mauretania 2 should have been saved. I mean, the Queen Mary retired just 2 years later. Mauretania could very easily have been sold to another cruise line or made into a floating hotel the way the QM was. Sad.

People only call it Mauretania 2 to seperate it from its 4-funnel namesake. The Queen Elizabeth 2 is often listed on the net as "Queen Elizabeth II", w/ the roman numeral in its name, but this is incorrect. The Queen Mary 2 gets the same typo, but less often.

  • i agree mauretania 2 should have been saved the 1st queen elizabeth might still be with us today if she dident cathch fire!

  • I love the footage of Aquitania from the decks of the Mauretania II.

    Great!

  • *Ahem* Mauretania was scrapped in 1935, same year as the olympic

  • When "Maurie" as she was known in Liverpool, (and to local enthusiasts still is!) was withdrawn in 1935, Cunard agreed to transfer the famouse name to a Southampton paddle steamer "Queen of Southampton" to prevent anyone else registering it whilst Cammell Laird was building Mauretania (2).

  • That is the second Mauretania right, because the first one was scrapped in 1935

  • I was wondering if you have anything on the Fall River Line. My relatives on my father's side were builders of the ships, in Fall River, Massachusetts. The Fall River Line was in service for 90 years until the 1930's. The flagship of the line, the Commonwealth was wider than the Lusitania and was the longest sidewheeler in the world. If you could post some videos, I would be greatly obliged.

  • Wow! You certainly have a maritime lineage! Unfortunately, I only collect films and memorabilia related primarily to the great Transatlantic liners (with a few exceptions where the films are concerned). I'm pretty sure I don't have any footage of sidewheelers, but if I ever come across any, you'll be the first to know. And again, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. I get such a kick out of them, too!

  • Did the Commonwealth work the Massachusetts-area waterways or was it a job for a distant company? (BTW, I'd venture a bet there's some information on wikipedia about it. :D )

  • No your're right, that wasn't neccessary. My great grandparent's were passengers on the RMS Mauretania and the RMS Baltic which as you probably know were renowned White Star Line and Cunard Line vesssels and I tend to behave a little aggresively upon those topics. I truly apolgize for being so rude and inconsiderate. I hope you accept my apology. By the way, yor collection of maritime videos is really extrordinary.

  • Hey, no worries, my friend. Just wanted to set the record straight. How cool that you have such a real and tangible connection to two great liners! Glad you like the films, and stay tuned, because I have hours upon hours of home movie films yet to be transferred, edited, and uploaded to YouTube! I sincerely hope you continue to enjoy them. All the best, Mark

  • Well, you wouldn't refer to the Mauretania (2) as the Mauretania, because there were TWO Mauretania's. If you had been more specific then there wouldn't have been a problem. You don't refer to the QM2 as the Queen Mary because there are TWO of them...smartass....

  • The second Mauretania wasn't named Mauretania 2 (see Kludas vol. 4), just Mauretania. It was painted on her hull and how she was referred to during her career. Sometimes in print you'll see (2) or II, but it wasn't offically her name. The QE2 and the QM2 were given these names with the "2" added, perhaps because their namesakes were still around. So it's correct to call this ship by her name, Mauretania. And speaking of names and calling, is that really necessary? :)

  • My God you people are gullable!! This is the RMS Aquitania, not the Mauretania. The RMS Mauretania was dismantled in 1935, so it's impossible for this video to be the Mauretania. The Aquitania on the other hand, was dismantled in 1954 and was the last of the four stackers. Do your research people!!!

  • Actually, Lazzara, while the Aquitania does make a brief cameo in these home movies, they were filmed aboard the Mauretania (2) in 1948. The Maury 2 was launched in 1939 for Cunard. Speaking of doing your research... :)

  • And don't forget that the second Mauretania was a two-stacker.

  • yes!! the Brittanic, Titanic and Olympic are the best ships ever!

  • RMS Mauretania is the good ship, but RMS OLYMPIC is the best ship of history.
