@Mill6100 Havanese are wonderful companion dogs. There is all kinds of good information on the internet about their temperament. They are so affectionate, sweet,loving, funny and very dedicated to their owners. They follow you every where like little shadows.

@havanesepups That being said, the nicest puppy/dog can be ruined by a well meaning "untrained owner" that does not know how to lead and train a puppy. The best thing you can do for yourself or any dog/puppy you get, is to make sure you understand how to be the best "alpha leader" you can be. Read all you can on these things before you get a puppy. Obedience lessons are a must with any dog breed. This gives you and your puppy the best chance for success.

My grandparents have two female Havanese from two different breeders, born and bought almost 4 years apart. The younger one was so pampered that at 4 years old, she still is scared to go up the 3 stairs from the garage into the house... I try to get them to let me try to encourage her to go up the stairs on her own, but my grandpa gives in to her sad stare and picks her up and puts her at the top of the stairs...

@D0N0tJudgeMe Keep trying with the dog. Your grandfather has trained her that that is what she is supposed to do at the stairs. Havanese really like to please there owners. A favorite treat at the top of the stairs might work.

I am babysitting my sister's havanese puppy. At 7 weeks old he was terrified of going down the stairs. But at 8 weeks (when i got him to babysit) i sat him at the top of the stairs and he whined cuz he wanted my attention. So I told him he has to come down the stairs if he wants my attention. Next thing you know, he starts down the stairs all by himself! So proud of him! Now he loves it! (i actually have the video posted on my youtube page of him going down the stairs for the first time)

Hard to find these dogs in a shelter... I tried. Had to go through a breeder but, if you do your homework and have some patience, you don't have to pay so much. I got my little guy for $400. I wouldn't trade him for anything.

I remember watching my havanese, Monty, go down the stairs for the first time. He learned to go up quickly, but he was terrified with going down. I always had to carry him. Then he managed to get up there around dinner and he was hungry. I was about to get him when I saw my poodle, Harley, help him down the steps. I cheered for him at the bottom, and eventually, Harley bounced all the way down, and Monty followed (He slipped a few times, though). I gave both a bigger treat that night.

Aww I have 2 havanese! We have a golden one who's 9 and a black one with a white chest (that looks EXACTLY like the one at 0:19) who's 10. The only problem with them is that they have a lot of dental problems and our had to get several teeth pulled :\
