The friendship and aid of the United States should be reserved primarily for nations that have a respect for basic human rights and civil order. For the Egyptian Army to stand idly by while a riotous scene escalates makes them duplicitous and acts as an endorsement of the riotous behavior. In an enclosed area like this downtown scene tear gas would have been very effective at dispersing the crowd. I get the impression that the army doesn't want to do anything to jeopardize their revered status.
