Turbo flutter is when there is no/ inoperable bov and the compressed air is forced back through the turbo when the throttle is closed .

Compressor surge however is when there is simply too much boost being pruduced by the turbo and it is forced back through the turbo while the throttlr is still open.

Compressor surge is when there is no BOV or the BOV fails.

People with no BOV build boost when they get on it but when they let off the throttle the charged air still needs to be let out. Generally you dont hear the surge because the BOV is before the compressor. Also Justinizme, you obviously dont know jack $hit. Not singling you out or anything.

@MacMalice253 Compressor surge is caused from too much pressure and not enough flow...the air around the compressor wheel stalls and it it gets forced back out the inlet. It puts extreme loads on the compressor wheel and the bearings.

So yes things like not running a blow off valve can cause this, but also running a turbo thats too big or one that spools too quickly can cause this.

Just look at the compressor map...you cross the surge line and it happens.

I put a T88-34D on my RX7 and can only compete with the mid size turbo supras like the GT35R's are no problem to beat, but a GT42R and anything over 600rwhp is just a fucking beast.

And you know what the 2JZ loves it, one of the best I6 engines, it can take a shitload of boost especially the bottom end before you need to start big dollar engine internals.

Because that is what they are suppose to do. You do not was them to flutter (compressor surge) because that kills a turbo. The fact that there is a large turbo on the car (flowing lots of cfm) it has to stay open longer to bleed all of the air.

i guess its because of how a bov (or at least the most of them to avoid haters) works. the vacuum what exists between the throttle valve and the intake when you take your foot off the gas, opens this valve, and as long your foot is off the gas, and the turbo is still spinning and producing enough pressure, you can hear the open bov. when you hit the gas, the vacuum goes away, the valve closes and holds the pressure.

Thats the surge that breaks things. surge under load is a bad bad thing. This car definitely doesnt have any serious compressor surge. This might just have a little bit of flutter from the BOV but nothing more than that

Here is my understanding of turbo lag. BOVs and waste gates help PREVENT turbo lag becuase they release the pressure so it doesnt come out through the actual turbo module itself, which would then have to reverse its spin and respool.

a Blow Off Valves purpose is to release the compressed air thats being forced into the intake manifold. The BOV opens to release this pressure when you let off the throttle to prevent the turbo from continuing to boost while you are not accelerating. But this feature can be adjusted or eliminated by a device called anti-lag which is commonly used in rally racing to keep the turbo fully compressed or "spooled" for more throttle response and acceleration. btw a turbo will never reverse its spin.

so until it hits higher rm, it wont have as much boost.
