Never forget why the pilgrims first came to this country - to escape prosecution for their (freakish) religious beliefs. They didn't fit into the communities in Europe that they came from.

A thing that annoys me is people talking about the Puritans that came to the US to practice their faith. Those Puritans were murderers who killed Native Americans and pushed them off their land. Unlike other Christian groups that came to North America, instead of trying to indoctrinate Native Americans, Puritans just decided that Native Americans should be killed, because of their beliefs in pre-destination. Not exactly the people I'd want to emulate.

Seperation of church and state in the constitution was placed for the purpose of preventing the government from taxing Christian churches and therefore controlling them financially. It had nothing to do with seperating Christian values from Government. The President takes oath with his left hand on the Bible, after all.

In fact, there are numerous examples of the church taxing people to help them get to heaven, hunting down, torturing, and killing its parishioners, and warring with neighboring states over differences in doctrine. With the knowledge that the church had done all of these things its ludicrous to assume that the founding fathers had tax evasion in mind when they established the separation of church and state.
