Whining from cambelt is either belt tensioner or water pump. Get a cambelt kit which will include all of the above and get it changed ASAP if the belt goes engine will be totalled. And as for rumbling that's wheel bearings. Jack car up une wheel at a time spin wheels by hand good and hard and u will either hear it or feel it in suspension strut.
The wheels did seem a bit unbalanced. As when the car reached speeds over 90 it would start to shake and vibrate. And I think the clatter at high revs is a worn clutch bearing. The engine itself is okay. Its only got 110,000 miles.
sounds like either the valves are sloppy (HIGHLY unlikely with hyraulic lifters... but i know nothing about renault but i imagine they use hydraulic lifters)
it has 110k miles, quite a lot for a cheap renault, especially a little 1.4 4 cyliner, i dont think it has hydraulic lifters, ive heard its something to do with the timing belt being overtensioned
I had a 1989 Chevy Corsica with 183K miles on it, and it ran great, but the rear shock towers were pretty rusty, and the torque converter would not unlock when I would stop, so the car would stall at any red light. I now have a 2002 Chevy Cavalier with about 64k miles on it, and it has a 2.2 liter 4 cylinder engine.
Nice, this has a 1.4 4 cylinder, puts out about 75hp, being the economy version. the renault has about 110k miles, it should have life left but i guess renaults arent well made, it has lots of electrical problems inside the car
Sorry, I don't have any idea on whatever noise you're talking about. If your Dad has some place tot take this too, then they might be able to figure it out. I listen to Car Talk on the radio a lot and I download their podcasts each week, and I don't remember remember anyone calling in for a noise that's barely noticeable.
My camera didnt pick up the sound very well, but when its running it makes lots of unhealthy sounds, it has a whine coming from the timing belt, it burns oil on the manifold, and when you go round corners it hums, and finally when the engine is revved high it has like a clatter as it speeds down to idle
How often does you dad check and add oil to this car? If it's leaking oil on the manifold, then you should be smelling it burn, and it might be leaking enough that the engine is might not be getting lubed in places that it's crucial. The whining of the belt tells me that it needs to be replaced, and the humming on turns could be that the power steering fluid has leaked enough that there's not enough to keep it going, and your dad will have to lean on the steering wheel to turn the car.
He let it sit for a few months, and he just put oil in the engine, it only burns once the engines warmed up, yeah you can smell it even outside, the timing belt is overtensioned which i think is why its whining, and dad doesnt have to lean on the steering wheel, it turns fine, it just hums, so it could be worn out
I don't know how much car are in the UK, but here in the US, you could be looking at $550 to nearly $1000 to have all the leaks repaired. An engine replacement on the other hand will run between $1770 to $3500!
over here ive seen engines on ebay from £79.00 to £350.00, but dad doesnt want to fix it, hes a cheapskate :-), but he has another car anyway, he just brought this one as a runabout
I wouldn't say that he's a cheapskate, it's the fact of affordability; can probably can't afford to fix this car. The prices I shared with you on car repairs are the totals after the job is done; that includes, parts, labor, and sales taxes.
for me it is a cambelt tensioner
and skipped one clove of timing

how many miles are on it?
sounds like either the valves are sloppy (HIGHLY unlikely with hyraulic lifters... but i know nothing about renault but i imagine they use hydraulic lifters)
or piston slap, which is bad (obviously)
