that's the beauty of Persepolis..and the people of Iran....it amazed me lot knowing all about its rich history..greetings from Philippines, thank you in sharing!!
Im sorry but Persepolis, or Takht-e Jamshid as you should call it was not the richest ancient city ever, it wasn't even the richest city in the Persian empire, that title goes to Susa, and even Susa paled in comparision to Babylon, even after the Persians conquered it.
But has anybody wonder why Persia was named after "Persi", the son of the Mythological Greek hero "Perseus" and "Andromaxi". Persi had a son "Ahaimeni" from whom was named the Royal House of Persia "Ahaimenides".The Ahaimenides found the Great Persian Empire and ruled until 330b.c. when Persia broke down by an other Greek, Alexander. Strange enough the last King of Persia Reza Pahlavi 1919-1980 boasted that he belonged to the "Ahaimenides" Dynasty!
Alexander may have destroyed Persepolis, but he wept the next morning. Actually I think it probably would have been better if Alexander didn't have an empire that fell after he died. He wanted an empire, that merged east and west.
the greeks learned from the persians and others in the middle east, no doubt about that ! ancient persia and the middle east nevertheless never produced single people of intellect like the ancient greeks did ! why the middle east never came up with thinking people and ideas ? it all ended up in europe one way or another ! the concept of freedom came out from europe !
the military tactics and strategies that the Persians used, were good enough until Eskandars time, the Persian King Dariush thought like this Alexander guy has had some luck, ok its enough, lets gather the whole army and get over with it, then we will back in time for dinner, not knowing that Eskandar had observed the Strenghts and the Weaknesses of the Persians.
Eskandar was a good student and Aristo a good teacher. Eskandar had no life experience.
While we all know that the Persian world was already an organized world, I mean the Greeks used to believe in different kinds of GODs, Persians were monotheistic, zardushti, zoroasterians.
Because today people believe that we Persians took alot of philosophical, relegious, scientific, cultural etc things from the Greeks, but this is bullshit.
I think they took alot from us.
anyway there alot of things that have been destroyed. More investigations, studies we need indeed
I think our Persian King Dariush underestimated Eskandar. I guess Dariush thought like hey: Im ruling the world from North India to North-Africa, so who is this Eskandare Maqdooni, while Eskandar was the Underdog, he had learned most of the things that he knew from Aristo. Aristo taught Eskandar things like: the people of the lands that the Persians are ruling, are not Persians, they might be tired of the Persian rule, Persians will definately underestimate you.............
......learn from your mistakes, dont be afraid, someone who has nothing has nothing to lose, sometimes in war going one step behind means going 100 steps forward, when u want to take the lead, make your way free, kill your opponents and anyone who stands in your way, Persians are barberians, they attacked us, they destroyed our Gods, temples, castles etc. did bad things to our women and children.

@Montyleeny14 - well, the correct name is Parsa or Pars which is today a province in Iran. The name Per-se-po-lis is not Iranian, therefore I would have just said Parsa.
EuroAmerican propaganda has virtually changed history - in their (fictional films) they depict alexander as something other than a barbarian invader who distroyed 4 major cities of the ancient world including setting Persepolis on fire and destroying the palace complex after looting it and murdering all its inhabitants.
@Peykan47 well, can you capture an empire??fyi, alexander didnt capture AN empire...he had captured so many empires...and btw, dont dare to say something like that about alex..he did a very very good job for a just a young age..you have a point, but even if he just captured empires, that counts as his own..and he had managed them so good...
@SirianKings please kurds was a small tribe in persia you ugly mountain rat. modern kurds have _NOTHING_ NOTHING NOTHING in common with medes. you just a bunch of mixed rats hiding in the mountain. Now if this "kurdistan" was so good why does it not have a country?
@MrFatbibi I'm Iranian, proud of grate Achaemenid era of Iran, also proud to be a Shia Muslim. Islam is an undeniable factor Iran's properties in Science, poetry, Architecture, etc. I recommend two things for you. First learn to respect the religion of God (Islam) and second spend a little bit of your time to read Iran and Islam history.

@MrFatbibi They sure did, and they are still doing it. You know some mullahs (and Khomeini wanted it too) was pushing for the complete destruction of persepolis, they wanted to level it with the ground. Such cultural people ey?
I think Alexander was a great general but not so as a ruler. But I can't blame him because a young soft man can't achieve what he did. Cyrus was a great ruler but even though he is the king I admire the most, I can't believe he was that good.
Alexander the Queer was a true criminal and faggot, a typical barbaric Gayreek cunt and scum-bag.
I am glad you Gayreeks spent 400 years as Ottoman slaves, sucking Turkish cocks...Because you deserved it, from the destruction brought about from Sardis to Bactria you suffered for this atrocity, and you will continue to suffer. Look at the fires that have been going on in Gayreece lately, ha ha ha!
Wow it seems like the World was Persian! while in fact Persian Empire= Elamite Culture++Lands(south Iran) + The Kurdish Empire of media. Besides It was NEVER called Persia at any time. It was Called Haxamashiyan empire after a Family A name of a Family also not after a Nation. Iranians, (even Median Kurds) used Aramean (semitic) alfabet/letters! or Elamite. That was the Reality! the Persians coppied the elamite Culture and the Kurdish Empire of Medya and named it Achaemenid!
I do agree that they portrayed it all wrong. I do like the movie and its parody, but only for the action/hilariousness. They got the theme right (kinda) but they made the characters quite inaccurate. Although you sholudn't worry about it though.
Kurds were Meds, and during the Persian Impire the Medes and Persians unified as thr Persian Impire as you can see that Ekbatan was one of the 3 capitals of Persian Impire before building the Perspolis. Iran for all Iranians. Iran is the greatest.
I am making an online Persian Community, i have watched your posted clips on youtube, i found them very interesting, and will be appreciated if you please join me and post some text topics with picture, on my forum, if you don't mind of course.
In the latter years of his long successful life, Merian C. Cooper - the creator of the epic film King Kong - developed an inconsolable longing to return to the Zagros Mountains of Iran and live out his remaining days among the Bakhtiari nomads of the region. The idea haunted him periodically. All he needed, he used to tell his old friend Ernest Schoedsack, was to buy horses, a few flocks of sheep,
medians and parthians, all iranians or how about the whole planet look closer at the world. how about we include the poor polar bears? i am not extreme, but the polar bears need everyones help.
iran has such a long history. my father was pure kurd/ medeian, mother parthian. our blood goes back pretty far back. i do not feel lost. please all get a long , understanding uderstanding uderstanding everyones point of view. i am proud of my mother land.
chicago institute has kept irans tablets (30 000) and because israel sued iran for a hamas attack in 97, the court granted the israeli victims over 500 million dollars, which since has been proposed to sell the tablets at auctions (and approved by the court) to compensate the victims...UNESCO has deemed this action as illegal (Wikipedia: Persian Chicago Heritage Crisis)
poetlife i think i missunderstood but what the hell is 300m arabs,400m turks, their not able to involve with persian's ancients and ofcourse culture.persians are pure
median oh sorry i was confused with media player,KURDS always known as sort of persian(iranian)people.have doubt??!!thats ur problem, lol(The Kurds speak in the Kurdish language of the Iranian branch. ACCORDING TO wikipedia)
The Kurds are an Iranian-speaking ethnolinguistic group who have
historically inhabited the mountainous areas to the south of Caucasus (Zagros and Taurus mountain ranges), a geographical area collectively referred to as Kurdistan.
This area covers northern Iraq, western and northwestern Iran, northeastern Syria and southeastern Turkey. Kurds are also found in southwestern Armenia and an enclave in Azerbaijan
kurdishleader, stop being silly, you answer your own questions, this was a civil war, a family fued. medians and kurds had the same religion, very close language, same Aryan heritage, same rites liek nourooz, were married to each other as in case of Cyrus.... You kurds should stick with the rest of Iranian people. There 300 million arabs, 400 million turks... do you want us to be wiped out? like we were in cenral Asia and west of tigris.
@kurdishleader Kurds then Yezidi's where Persian subjects, kurds didn't exist untill persia conquered parts of anatolia in 2200 bc, Yezidi's who came as slaves and mercenaries for the Persians stayed and the Yezidi's who became Muslim where called Kord/Kurd by the Selcuk Turks who Conquered Anatolia, and the area they live in koordistan/kkurdistan. You clearly live in a fantasy world with a fantasy history lol ...
@sasua741 pfffffffffff north Iranian? LOLz Iran was established about 90 years ago. OK, I will get it out o my head, but it will always stay in history, and wait till USA attacks Iran and all evidences will come out how all Iran belonged to the Medes(KURDS).
@kurdishleader 1) You seem to be one of those "Up their own asses", hates everyone nationalistic Kurds who forgets that Kurds are Iranian people, just like Persians
2) He also forgets that Kurdistan is located elsewhere than to Ekbatana and the center of the Median Empire
3) But ye mainly, your anti Iranian reteric is quite profound, as you yourself are Iranian
greeks and Romans had lots of slave, but we Persians gave the freedom of choices to all the nations. now you tel me democracy with slavery how can be? today we are treating like barbaric and monsters by Hollywood, we were the 300 not Spartans, we fought with 20nations which supported Iraq during Iran&Iraq war and we still standing. Long Live Persia the land of True men. Greece died after Alexander but Persians still a power in region. Respect that.
I find it interesting how these Northen Europeans glorify the brutal militarist Serfdom of Sparta; how they believe every bad thing the Greek wrote about their Persian enemies but explain away what they wrote about themselves, how they claim as their own the history of the ancient world of two great people who lived side by side, shared blood and ideas. both in peace and war. I have never have trouble with the Greek themselves. We both now what we were, good and bad or with Italians about Rome
The Greek, despite their brutalities and enslavement of their fellow man, despite their destructive militarism and almost love of war and bloodshed, did not "die" zagros. As they learned from Babylon and Persia mathematics, medicine from Egypt, writing from Phoenician, developed abstract geometry and passed these to Rome. Roman might and sword brought north of European primitives out of the dark and shined the light of civilization upon them. Rome, Greece, babylon, Elam, Persia, we shined!
Aeschylus states in The Persians, the Greeks "of no man are they called the slaves or vassals", while the persians, as Euripides states in Helen, "are all slaves, except one" — the Great King.
Slavery was common practice and an integral component of ancient Greece throughout its history, as it was in other societies of the time. It is estimated that in Athens, the majority of citizens owned at least one slave. ..chattel (personal possession) slavery, as opposed to dependent groups such as the penestae of Thessaly or the Spartan helots, The chattel slave is an individual deprived of liberty. Helots were owned by the state.
wow totall BS yeah the greeks had slaves(tho they had laws on how they were to be treated, and they were not to be beaten,murdered,etc...) but in fact nearly non of the Athenians owned slaves because most athenians were craftsmen, merchants,or a tradesman who couldn't afford to keep a single slave after their family expenses. the majority of slaves in athenian greece lived lives more like what we would call serfism, they sold themselves to wealthy land owners and recieved housing, food, little cash
The practice of slavery in Achaemenid Persia was generally banned, Zoroastrianism, the de facto religion of the empire, explicitly forbids slavery,[6] and the kings of Achaemenid Persia followed this ban to varying degrees, as evidenced by the freeing of the Jews at Babylon, and the construction of Persepolis by paid workers.
You PoetOfFart, are an absolute moron who thinks he knows more than the people who actually lived then. Now look buddy, when wikipedia is your education, I do feel sorry for you. Even idiots like can edit it. Open a book for once or stop sneaking out of school. Lastly, when you hate the world(a.k.a. western civilization), I'm afraid the world will eventually return you the favor.
When you think about it(not a strong point of yours), you are actually living in my world. The stongest do win...
Shall we continue with ur education with references?
Xenophon's advice is to treat slaves as domestic animals Ref: Xenophon, Economics, 13:6.
The condition of slaves varied very much according to their status; the mine slaves of Laureion and the pornai (brothel prostitutes) lived a particularly brutal existence,

Greek literature abounds with scenes of slaves being flogged;

Well the thing is that nothing of this would have happened if you haven't conquered Asia Minor in the first place. Foreign rule some times leads to rebellion.
Asia minor did not rebel. The whole expanse of Anatolia, lydian, for the most paer were perfectly fine with the way Persians let them be free in their own Satrapi. It was only on the edge of Asia minor where Ionians revolted. Persian empire brought prosperity to western Asia. We were a benevolent nation and essentially created a federation of autonomous states. It was the first and the best of its kinds. We freed the slaves; as Hegel said we brought light into the world.
Cyrus was a good ruler, freed the jews, gave cultural tolerance but his successors were despotic. Hegel had only a minute fraction of the information our century has on this subject. Ancient Persia was a framework of puppet satraps. If some of the subjects denied to pay the annual tribute they would be severely punished. Fear held the empire together. Divine authority validated the "divine right of kings". They were aggressive expansionists but in the end they met their match and even more.
The satraps generally prospered. No one just not paid taxes. if they did not pay taxes they also intended to leave the empire. Persians thought they has a divine mission true but you have compare them to the people of their times. Spartan ritual initiation was to go out and kill a helot slave if they felt like it. read the bible's sematic inhumanities. Assyrian torture inventiveness. Hegel knew more than you think.
Furthermore the homeland(present day Iran) had a special status, exempt from provincial tribute. This shows conquered provinces to be inferior in the political structure. Royal inspectors and secret police, the "eyes and ears of the king," toured the empire and reported on local conditions daily. This shows the totalitarian regime it's people were living in. About slavery, officially banned by Zoroastrians, it was practised upon conquered people. Things were not perfect in the east then AND now.
These things are simply not true. "The eyes and the ears" were to observe the functions of Satraps officials not the people, main concern was corruption. If we has slaves, would we not use them in the construction of Perseh? we did not have an economic slave system like Sparta or Athens. It was a totalitarian government; after all it was ruled by king of kings. I only say overall we were the best people of our times, the most humane, we followed a great prophet, we brought light to the world.
Slavery existed but not practised on zoroastrians(persians themselves), it was reserved for their subjects. Also conquered people were forced to serve in the army. I have no idea how you can describe one entity as both totalitarian and humane. "To bring light to the world" is for me a very subjective phrase. Truth is sometimes a matter of point of view. Eastern and western civilizations have different visions, I'm afraid.
The subjects of empire were subject to draft; even today where there is a draft for example in the US it can be applied to territories; this is not Slavery. You just said Cyrus was a "good ruler" but Cyrus was an Autocrat and believer in totalitarian rule. It is not a stable system but there was no other way to govern the whole of known world. You Europeans make arbitrary east-west divisions to make you feel good. You are under our influence far more than you think.
furthermore, not everyone was Zoroastrian even in an around Susa. We practiced religious freedom for your information. That would be one ray of light which you were asking for. As to brining light to the world; ask your esteem Western philosopher Hegel what he meant. It is his phrase; I assume he meant for example what I said. You don't seem to believe me; we did not have a slave system.
Earlier you said the satrapies were free, now you say "The subjects of empire." Draft from your own people and enforcing conquered/enslaved ones are different things. I believe I stated why Cyrus was a good ruler and I mean compared to the later ones. Yes, they didn't destroy every other culture but they surely oppressed them hard. You blaim Europeans, I think you should look at Iran(today) fir

The idea haunted him periodically. All he needed, he used to tell his old friend Ernest Schoedsack, was to buy horses, a few flocks of sheep,

Kurds are also found in southwestern Armenia and an enclave in Azerbaijan

uNeedAnEducation more than a Kiss.
Helots were owned by the state.
poetlifeart 3 years ago
wow totall BS yeah the greeks had slaves(tho they had laws on how they were to be treated, and they were not to be beaten,murdered,etc...) but in fact nearly non of the Athenians owned slaves because most athenians were craftsmen, merchants,or a tradesman who couldn't afford to keep a single slave after their family expenses. the majority of slaves in athenian greece lived lives more like what we would call serfism, they sold themselves to wealthy land owners and recieved housing, food, little cash
TheEvolver311 1 year ago
iNeedAKiss continuing with your education:
from Wikipedia:
The practice of slavery in Achaemenid Persia was generally banned, Zoroastrianism, the de facto religion of the empire, explicitly forbids slavery,[6] and the kings of Achaemenid Persia followed this ban to varying degrees, as evidenced by the freeing of the Jews at Babylon, and the construction of Persepolis by paid workers.

They were aggressive expansionists but in the end they met their match and even more.
mollymange 3 years ago
poetlifeart 3 years ago
Furthermore the homeland(present day Iran) had a special status, exempt from provincial tribute. This shows conquered provinces to be inferior in the political structure. Royal inspectors and secret police, the "eyes and ears of the king," toured the empire and reported on local conditions daily. This shows the totalitarian regime it's people were living in. About slavery, officially banned by Zoroastrians, it was practised upon conquered people. Things were not perfect in the east then AND now.
mollymange 3 years ago
poetlifeart 3 years ago
Slavery existed but not practised on zoroastrians(persians themselves), it was reserved for their subjects. Also conquered people were forced to serve in the army. I have no idea how you can describe one entity as both totalitarian and humane. "To bring light to the world" is for me a very subjective phrase. Truth is sometimes a matter of point of view. Eastern and western civilizations have different visions, I'm afraid.
mollymange 3 years ago

Earlier you said the satrapies were free, now you say "The subjects of empire." Draft from your own people and enforcing conquered/enslaved ones are different things. I believe I stated why Cyrus was a good ruler and I mean compared to the later ones. Yes, they didn't destroy every other culture but they surely oppressed them hard. You blaim Europeans, I think you should look at Iran(today) fir
