@valeriosedici Not many people are familiar with it, but I consider the theme he wrote for the film Quigley, Down Under to be his opus. He also wrote the theme for The Hunt For Red October.
The best score of all time is the score for Conan the Barbarian.
The story of his daughter playing a counter melody to his orgy scene piece while he was writing it and him suddenly realizing that it worked perfectly and giving her credit for it is so sweet and beautiful, and then for her to hear the finished piece and say he got it wrong, always makes me smile. When I heard he had died, that story was the first thing that came to my mind.
This is it! The greatest composer of my lifetime, and of any ones life? he gets a thank you. Every time I hear him now, I cry. I cry, I cry, He will be missed!
Basil is one of the least recognized soundtrack composers...the Academy failed to recognize him (and barely recognized Ennio Morricone)...sad! But if I get my 100 best soundtracks done...he certain has Conan among the very top!
Just wanted to say thanks for posting this. The Conan the barbarian soundtrack is the most moving music I have ever heard! This is what should have been shown the year he died during the academy awards.
Conan's my favourite soundtrack of all time. Many other composer's use a core theme tune to their soundtracks that runs more or less through the whole of a movie. Basil was easily one of the best.
Wow..Robocop too? I loved that theme, didn't know until now that it was Basil's work. Red October has to be by far his most epic theme, in my opinion: the scope is simply grand.
Poledouris gave somewhat mediocre films epic proportions with his brilliant scores. I'm not sure if I would have Starship Troopers and the Blue Lagoon as some of my favorite movies if it wasn't for Poledouris. And not to forget Conan the Barbarian, which has the best score in all of Arnold Schwarzenegger's films! :)
Beautiful tribute to a great composer...thanks for posting. Made me think of his "Lonesome Dove" score, and how his music brought that great miniseries to life. Can't think of Gus and Call without thinking of Basil.
Fantastic composer! I only wish his film scores were longer overall, but he made up in quality, not quantity.

Basil Poledouris also composed the soundtrack for "Farewell to the King" starring Nick Nolte.
It was one of the best scores ever. Very dramatic. Fits the movie very well.

The Hunt For Red October theme is the best to me. It's s gloomy sounding at the beginning and becomes an awesome march type of music at the end.

I remember how shocked I was, when I looked up Basil Poledouris at Wikipedia and had to read that he has moved on.
Well, at least we now can be sure that there´ll be a good melody played in heaven, once we get there.
R.I.P. Basil

I'm quite sure that, without the work of Poledouris, most of these films featured would have suffered greatly.
