I have watch this one video more than any other on here---it holds special meaning to me---the first time I ever drove a vehicle in a long tunnel under the ocean. I thought I would pass out!
I could not visit my family in Virginia Beach for years becauseof this tunnel I finally conquered my fear and went for it ..it is still scary and I have to always prep for it
you seem fascinated with the people on the motorcycle, and now that simple melody in the music is probably going to be stuck in my head for a while now
My parents told me many times about the old days before the tunnel, when you had to take the ferry across. The bridge-tunnel opened to traffic on Apr. 15, 1964.
Does anybody know whether the Amish are still allowed to drive their horses and buggies on the bay bridge tunnel, what with the increased traffic and all?
I go through this everytime I see my grandparents. Interesting ride on the Chespeake bay bridge tunnel. Lots of seaguls and people fushing in the summer
lol, heading to the motorcycle convention in Ocean city? I went there once, during the convention, and at 2 in the morning, these 2 drunk motorcycle dudes knocked on our door, and thought it was their room. (hotel) they woulden't leave, until we had to EXPLAIN that the number on their card didn't match the number on the door. lol
I remember driving the CBBT for the first time in the Fall of 1989 (October) and remember how crystal clear the sky was and the view from the restaurant/gift shop was so awesome.
Great scenic drive of going over from New York/NJ/Philadelphia area to Norfolk and Va.Beach. You also avoid the 'parking lot' lol of driving through the DC Beltway.
The only negative is the brutal $12.00 toll 1-way on the bridge though.
And no breaks for motorcycles . . . still $12.00 and $5.00 if you return with your receipt within three days (I think, it may be two days). I couldn't believe it, it costs the same for my Diesel F-350 Crew Cab long bed loaded down with six large dudes and 2,000 pounds of gear in the bed as it does for my puny little KLR650.
An awesome feat of engineering, great video Just to put it into perspective for those watching, it takes about 20 minutes to cross from shore to shore.

Thanks for this video. We will be driving thru and I am nervous to go in a underwater tunnel. This helped me to see how it is and to prepare myself.

Nice tunnel. It'd be a bear if somebody broke down in that tunnel, especially since there are no shoulders.

a neat video
why was it desinged like that though?
What I refer to is why is it a bridge and tunnel?
Itis quite unusual I must say and is quite cool as well
canadiancatgreen 4 years ago
The tunnels allow large boats to pass over top on their way in/out of the bay. Much more efficient than say a drawbridge.

I love the last few miles of this crossing driving south on US route 13, when you can see the Norfolk/Va Beach shoreline approaching in.
