People these tatoos are not mainstream Japanese but are associated with the underworld. Gangsters, low lifes get them and really if you're interested in Japanese culture and get these tatoos you may as well never come to Japan. You will be outcast and people will want nothing to do with you. Over here its not cool or trendy to get them. If you want to come over to Japan DON'T get them.
no thats not a knife lol.. Its a shader needle its a hole bunch of little needles together this one is flat as you can see but they do come in two shapes flat or round round is for most outlines and flat are for the shading part
kaumeheiwa, why do so many young japanese people have dreadlocks? where and when in japanese culture did the people have dreadlocks? NEVER, so stfu up with your "stick to your own culture, dont know the meaning blah blah" bullshit. you're probably just some hater who is afraid to get any ink. don;t come on youtube trying to preach some nonsense you douchebag
what your saying is that a person should only stick with what a person knows, and something beyond it's understanding should not be learned? That's like saying that no one should learn karate because it's beyond their understanding. It's not disrespectful getting japanese art tatooed it's actually in respect of the japanese art people are getting em.
apanese tattoo is not just an arts there is a mean for a koi, a dragon, a pheonix, everything. do you know what iot means? if you put something spiritual like that on your body not knowing what it is its not god its disrespectful so dont tell me how japanese people feel haha you dummy
I think there are two things that should be taken into consideration -
Firstly, if someone does get a tattoo from another country / culture, does that mean the meaning carries over ? Or does a new meaning develop?
Secondly, tattoos are artworks, the tattooist the artist, if the tattooist sees no problem in applying a meaningful tattoo, it shouldn't be considered disrespectful. Besides, according to aesthetic theory (circa fin de siecle 1800-1900) - art has no meaning - it is quite meaningless..
the meaning is in the art of coures its the same. i guess when your not japanese and you dont understand the culture you will never eel it the way a true japanese will feel about it.
learning karat and putting a meaning on yurself is diffeent. its like getting a jail house tattoo that means you killed solmeone when you really didnt. you would get killed in jail. same thing dont compare it t something like that.
A lot of fashion in Japan for example, Gothic Lolita, EGA, Visual Kei inspired fashions all make use of the cross as a fashionable image without believing or understanding or respecting the reason behind it.
You are complaining that western culture is disrespectful of your spiritual images - your culture does exactly the same.
It isn't just people from our culture... People from your culture do exactly the same thing.
the cross is in many cultures... what im trying to say is the art in the japanese tattoo is earned, kinda like a jail tattoo. if you didnt murder someone you should not get a tattoo that represents that, you would get killd in jail. e cross is a symbol of beleif it very different. so before you open your mouth lets do our homework and stfu.
mmhmm I so feel like i'm wrong right now, when you are the one being offensive ^^; yeah right.
it isn't so very different at all, for you the tattoo is an image earned through actions, the cross (or maybe more appropriately - the crucifix)could be said to be an image earned through belief.
And the person getting the tattoo above is likely to know more about the tattoo he is getting than many other people "belonging" to the "culture of the tattoo"
I assume your japaneze since you refer to white people as " you whites " and i find your way of generalizing white people as well as your nationalistic bullcrap about "whites" trying to be japaneze, because people are getting inspiration from something they find positive about another culture.
haha first of all lets learn how to spell.... its japanese. and just to let you kbnow to white people its just art to but us its more then that. its ok cuz you guys look duymb. i see soo many of you guys with kanji tattoos that dont mean anything or the characters are not used correctly and it means something else like one i saw said toilet bowl. haha so go ahead look stupid.
actually caucasian ppl tend to get more chinese characters tattooed on themselves more. alot of kanji can be translated into hanyu and vice versa,if u c someone with something that makes no sense, its probably hanyu, also i read alot of ur comments saying caucasians shouldn't even touch kanji symbols at all.. cus its sacred? i am pretty sure u know tattoos in japan r looked down upon by majority,i no several places that don't allow people to enter if they have any irezumi / tattoos on themselves
kanji itself is chinese you dummy. and its read the same if it dont make sense it dont make sense. and most whites get kanji. and i did not say kanji is sacred im talkin about the art everything has a meaning and tattoos are looked down on in japan, amnd its because of the meaninng of the tattoo. learn your facts buddy
kanji itself is chinese you dummy? so u saying someone can chinese can read and understand all japanese characters? japanese and hanyu have alot of the same characters but they are NOT all the same meaning... like 理論 has the same meaning in both languages while 這 have totally different meanings... you get ur facts str8
To be more precise, Irezumi (traditional japanese tattoo) is more or less feared then frowned upon, simply because of the possible trouble it may bring along with it. Organized crime.
'coz its for whites' thts so racist i mean anyone can av a tattoo if they want one and were not disrepecting japenise people just coz we can get tattoo's aswell anyone can get one i mean people may have deep meanings why they get a certain tattoo but some peeps might fink it just looks good i mean both ways are fine and were not being disrespectful
Y would u put tatoo i mean it is going to be on ur skin forever if people hate it then im so sry but for me i like the tatoo design but no tatoo for me im islam
i have half a sleeve on my right arm of a tradition samurai with leaves falling down, people have their own taste and own sense of identity and belonging. you cant understand the spiritual meaning of a tattoo unless u get one urself
I have a Japanese tattoo and I am white .Why did I get that b/c I respect the Japanese art and think it is the most beautiful art other tattoos are boring this has meaning and depth its a master piece not some shitty tat

totally agree with you. a tattoo should mean smething to you personally and symbolize you. im japanese and have most of my body tattooed most of tyhem done horimono style. if your not japanese you shouldnt get one. its very disrespectful. you have no right getting something you dont understand.
what your saying is that a person should only stick with what a person knows, and something beyond it's understanding? It's not disrespectful getting japanese art tatooed it's actually in respect of the japanese art people are getting em.

Your comments could be potentially misconstrued as racism.
Not by me though, I hasten to add :)
I do see the reason for reading up on the meanings, but if this is done (it is not a prequisite for some...) I can't see why a white guy cannot have a Jap oriented tat and vice versa. Look at London to see many influences from the world over.
Dude, if you are Jap, then take it as a compliment. This white guy may even have read more about YOUR heritage than you!
almost as funny as seeing Japanese people wearing Savile Row suits or Levis.
Actually, that's not funny at all. What is your point?
And on the pain issue, all big tattoos hurt to some degree. I found the stomach to be the most painful place by a long way. Close to any bone aint too good either.
my sister got her first right on the inside of her wrist (right above the artery) an she said that hurt pretty bad, but thats also the worst place (from what i hear) to get a tattoo cause of the artery, but her boyfriend got one that covered his back, and he didnt wince till they got to the shoulder blades, so it all depends on where you get it and how tough you are i guess. (note: i dont have one due to age requirments)

I think our bodies are the temples of our souls.
Each one of us has our own unique way of adorning our bodies.
I love my tattoo.
Having it done was an amazing and very spiritual thing for me.
There is never a reason to hate the marks on your body, self inflicted, from injury, or genetics.
Each mark is a part of your life.
Somethng like a photo of who you felt you were.
