@ralucagymnast Hi, you can hear it. Positive strikes are much stronger than negative. Much more bass in the sound, and they sound like "boom" instead of crackling. Also positive lightning doesn't have many multiples, usually they strike only once. See 2:03 for example. :)
UncleGrizzo, I take it these storms are short in their duration? How long did this particular severe thunderstorm last? I noticed by the end of the video you can see the clouds starting to break?
Wish you had some better external shots of the lightning...still love the feeling of being inside on a stormy night. Helps for those of us stuck in San Diego where we've not had lightning for 9 months!
LMAO!! I hope your home is ok... but when you said it musta hit something cos something sizzled... i spit out my coffee laughting at the comments... :-)
That is the scariest storm I have ever seen:( I am brontophobic, but I am getting a bit better; I can actually watch a storm now, if I am with other people, but if its at night, I still shit myself. We dont get anything anywhere near as intense as this in the UK, thank God, I think I would have died of a heart attack, seriously!!
Oh, how I hate minutes like that since my house has been hit by such a monster. All romantic feelings about thunder and lightning have gone then. Mother nature can get crazy.
Amazing video. Yes, it's ugly to have an evil thundercloud of that power right above your house. You suddenly notice how unsure it is that things will still be same one hour later.
I love these kind of thunderstorms when there are a good number of close positive strikes. Your camcorder picks up the sound so good too. You did the same thing I do in a storm like this, as the bolts get closer and closer, time to go inside. My brother and I watched a tree get nailed about 25 yards from us. We were in my truck when this happened. Wished I had it on film. Would love to have that one in my video collection.
great timing with the commentary "this lightning is ridicolous" just before the flash and bang from hell makes for great watching thanks again for posting
That was a serious light show. Reminds me of the storm that hit me in Dayton, Ohio last Saturday (7/25) around noon. A big lightning bolt struck the water tower near my house and it sounded like an explosion. By the way, the video scared my dog.
When I grow up I want to be a teacher, then during summer (paid vacation XD) Go to South Dakota, and totally chase some storms...with some people like you who are good at it, it looks amazing!
that flash at 2:31 was intense. thing happened here in Denver. I was in the basement and i saw the flash and thw thunder felt like an earthquake. SHOOK THE BASEMENT!!!
Rathunter, hearing the crack and boom of thunder immediately means that the bolt occured pretty close to you, the first lightning strike did seem close because of the bright flash but the area the bolt struck was further away. You will still hear the crack and boom but not as quick as you might when a bolt hits within several hundred yards from you. When a bolt hits within a 100 yards you wont have time to react with a flinch cause the crack and boom will be immediate. Great video.. -gerrit
I am moving to Roseville in a few days and these are the kind of storms you get ..... nice! Never see anything even close around Seattle ..... That zap at 2:31 was intense!
this was a cool storm i remember...I live on a huge hill and my room overlooks miles and miles. i definately didn't get to sleep my eyes were blinded even when i closed them
Ok i have a couple questions. One how come the thunder did not come when that first lightning strike struck? Isn't thunder the aftermath of a lightning strike when the atmosphere is superheated at a high speed to where the air around it explodes?
You oughtta check out my lightning video I shot earlier this week. I know it's kinda filled with these "YEAH BABY!!!" comments, but I think you'll like it... the lightning in that video is spaced few and far between, but it's good.
Hay why does it say deadly lightning did it kill someone or is it just a metaphor? that is the shit ryt there m8 only if we got that kinda storm in London, Uk We had a big one in 2005 theres some good footage on here of it (not mine) but it wernt this intense!
Look at 1:03, 2:03, and 2:31... lightning was DAMN close dude! The thunder doesn't even sound like thunder, it sounds like a cannon report! Some of the coolest damned lightning I've ever seen on video! Nice work buddy!
I got one question to make to you,I'll be pleased for your answer.I know that that kind of hail and those severe thunderstorms are a consequences of a supercell cloud. The question I have is:Dod that supercell turn into a tornado?
Hey, I live in Burnsville, MN That was a wild storm. I got about 90 seconds of it post on here just click the name. I counted over 90 flashes in 90 seconds, pretty intense. Thanks for posting.
Yeah, it was quite a show. We actually had two rounds of severe weather within a couple hours. Did you get any severe weather in Illinois that a.m.? My buddy had almost tennis ball sized hail from this storm.
We had warnings for high wind. bout 50 at my place, just under severe. no hail and some good lightning. Some nearby places got higher winds and some tree damage, lines down.
I can't believe how many positive strikes that storm has, almost every strike is positive boom. just unbelievable!

This one reminds me of the T-storm in Springfield, Vermont on the 25 th of that August (2007), some days later. Except that one was in the day time.
And then they're was another one during the late PM when I gotten back home (When I lived in Cavendish, Vermont, about 10 miles west of Springfield).

the NWS has only issued a "severe thunderstorm warning"
and what happened later?
atornado warning or was the thunderstorm"fallingdown"?
