If Indonesia consists of just eastern part of Sumatra island and western part of Borneo than you may say "Kite ni Serumpun, Pakcik". But you CAN NOT say that to Balinese, Javanese, the Bataks, Papuans, Sundanese, Torajans and many other ethnics all over Indonesia. Indonesia has more than 500 ethnics whom speak their own language. Only people I mentioned above speak quite similar to Malay language. "Kite ni Serumpun" used only by Malaysian politicians (especially UMNO) for their own purpose

It's similar, really. I live in West Borneo and we speak Malay for daily conversation. I can understand what Malaysian people are saying. Most of the people who lived in part of Borneo, Riau, and Sumatra are using this language, and not to forget that the root of Indonesian language is Malay.

First of all, I'm a dayak and i realized that a lot of our words are similar. indo/melayu/dayak. And in our history class, CLEARLY, the first person that came to malaysia is actually from indonesia. Parameswara's the name. He fleed from indonesia to malaya land and named the city what we call now Melaka. The fact is, bahasa melayu are mostly copied from here and there.

for me i do agree with rilham, as for malay language had beed used as a lingua franca for this continent for ages. maybe now its just the nation that divide us, so its more to indonesian-malay or malaysian-malay, but its malay language after all. if we really study the similarities and the root of the language itself, they come from the same root, but as the language spread widely, it tends to get some additional words and slang; depends on the culture of the group who use d language
