This sounds like it was a lot of fun - musician comes out and starts hurling abuse at audience, threatening to stomp off if anyone records or takes pics - audience then sits there politely for two sets and ends up shouting "Give us an encore, you motherfucker!" .... while taking pictures..... and interjecting the odd "Vaffanculo!"
What a surprise they didn't get one :-)
At least he said "Bye bye"..... He was probably in a hurry to get back to that same restaurant for dinner :-)
it is because of human tendencies like these that reality shows are swamping the place and replacing good television (ok, perhaps not the most appropriate metaphor, but you get my point)
the truth is people like this profoundly misunderstand the dynamics between a performer and audience - it is not a relationship! just like a fan's reaction cannot make or break any performer's day (or it shouldn't anyway), likewise a performer's comment must not affect any listener.
after all, you did not attend the concert because of the musician's viewpoints. you did it because of his/her music.
so, people please get over it and just enjoy the music for what it is - brilliant!
Keith Jarrett - amazing musician, pompous asshole.
I have to ask the apologists: When does being good at an instrument give you permission to belittle and verbally assault others? He is too self-indulgent for me anyway. Surprising someone hasn't laid a serious ass-kicking on him yet!? Reminds me a lot of that abusive dickhead Gordon Ramsay.
You clearly have the same level of integrity, respect and honour as Jarrett - zero!-and you are also a pathetic foul mouthed racist. He is the best and I will listen to his playing free of charge on youtube but I would not spend money on his c.d.s or pay to go to one
of his concerts after this pompous childish
outburst. The entire audience might as well have walked out and left them to "play with
Keith Jarrett is one of the greatest musicians of all time, no doubt about it. He told those italian peasants what they needed to hear. Of course, people who don't understand what integrity, respect or honor is will tell you otherwise - don't listen to them. What the hell have Italians ever contributed with to the jazz stage anyway? Not much!
So, God Bless Keith Jarrett and his music, and I hope he'll keep telling assholes to fuck off!
but he is the biggest F----ing crybaby in the world. There are PLENTY of equally good jazz pianists (none better) in the world who would be happy to play any time he wants to leave the stage.
I agree with Keith. He has complete devotion and passion for his music and he wants to be in sintony with the audience. Consider the amount of stress and concentration, journalists are invadent and sometimes they have no respect for musician and audience. It happens often in public concerts. Fuck off the press.

What a day for Umbria. Like having a lunatic who slam people into submission on the loose in your beloved town. This incident speaks volumes. It seems prime time for jazz "promoters' to reevaluate what greedy gate keepers are doing to Jazz. Italian audiences are the best in the world and they should be embraced by any artist who is fortunate enough to perform there. A "big name" isn't always hugs n kisses. If it draws #'s but humiliates the town, where's the love?
hey KJ is a little crazy...I once saw him check the suspension on 3 cars before accepting a ride to the airport...but he shure can play. just forget he's an asshole and enjoy the music.

i think people who took keith's comments so very personally have tremendous egos, or really ego voids.
it makes me wonder when i see audience members who take themselves so seriously.

I was there.. That was freaky..
But you gotta give it to Keith that he gave a pretty clear message.. To bad someone still took a picture..
He said: "That means we dont play an enchore, Good night"
So he is banned from Umbria Jazz?
