It's funny that the woman enters the north-bound 480 on-ramp at Folsom & Fremont streets (0:25-0:31), yet she enters the north-bound 480 OFF-ramp at Main & Mission streets (0:33-0:38) just a few seconds later. Everyone in the video is driving against the traditional direction of traffic. I suppose the reason is two-part: she could not continue on the Folsom on-ramp since it became a dead-end after 1991, and she could not be shown entering an off-ramp, since Main st. is one-way and still active.
@Enigmatism415 it is the Embarcadero. the Central/101's only sharp curve was when it went from a single deck into a double deck just south of Market Street...it then continued almost straight until Hayes where it bended slightly to the northeast until it ended at Turk/Golden Gate
I have since researched it; it is indeed the Embarcadero Freeway (the section where it branches off of the I-80 Bay Bridge approach, next to the clock tower and 76 / Bank of America building). That building with the blue stripe still exists.
Caltransd does need to demolish the Embarcadero. I was one of the responders to I880/Cypress on Oct. 18. I watched my 1 yearold daughter fly 2 feet up and 4 feet out from the couch she was on. The car falling off and bursting into flames didn't happen. What did happen was bad enough. Loma Prieta was a 7.3 earthquake. I was living off Saratoga and 280 in San Jose at the time. This quake lasted for 45 seconds and came in a variety of waves. At 3 yrs old, you wouldn't remember it.
Look at the I-280 Freeway From the 101 interchange to Embarcadero CalTrans needs to demolish the double decker section of I-280 because it is a hazard in the next big quake.
if you remember, after the earthquake the double-deck portion of the 280 remained closed for several years (until 1994-5?) while it was extensively repaired and retrofitted.
@derek20la Yeah 280 aint coming down anytime soon... seismic engineering in the 90s after loma prieta was great... it all has to do with the rebar... if you put it far enough into the beams from the colums, they wont split apart and the structure supported wont pancake
im 22 years old i saw this movie on tv and im not so sure if any one died or was injured in the stadium that day but i have to say if anyone escaped injury and/or death that was a miracle and a half
the movie was filmed as a documentary for televison only im not so sure if you can get it however i have it on vhs and hoping to convert it to dvd sometime in the future
I remember this movie, I was 7 when the earthquake happened it lasted 15 secs and look how much damage it did.... while they're retrofitting the bay bridge the last remains of the double decker will be gone in 2013, and please post the movie somewhere, i would love to watch it again.
I was six when it happened. I lived in Novato at the time. Trust me when I say we felt it up there. Because my mom took a whole hour to get back from Safeway which had caved in because of the quake. Our house shook for 10 seconds, I remember my stepdad telling me to stand still and not move while holding my baby brother who was about 14 months old at the time. speaking of this TV movie, I've be looking all over for this! I can still remember watching it.
The freeway they're on is the Embarcadero in San Francisco, which was being demolished in 1993. At 0:41 behind the Giants fans van, is the Clock Tower, which was demolished to build Rincon Hill Residential high-rises. Also, the old 880 viaduct was never that large.
Wow this quake lasted for 2 min while the real Loma Prieta lasted for 17 seconds. If the quake lasted for 2 min then all of Northern California would have been demolished. and there would have been thousands of deaths in the Bay Area. This 2 min Quake would have damaged Sacramento also if it were to happen. also it would have to larger than the 1906 quake. I lived in South San Francisco in 1989 and I was 3 years old
I was there in 1989. Trust me friend, it lasted a lot longer than 17 seconds. There were several waves. It was incredibly terrifying for a 6.9 earthquake. I saw people trample one another just to exit a building. Don't always listen to the official 'stats'. There is nothing quite like seeing something with your own eyes.
@bolognadetector I was record shopping in hayward and just drove on the cypress probably 20 prior. I thought this must be destruction time. Went to see the cypress the next without words.
@dinfg6 The World Series game that day is only reason there weren't thousands of deaths from that particular earthquake. On any normal day that freeway would have been packed with thousands of commuters. Thousands who would have been crushed in that freeway collapse.
I was only 11 years old when this movie came out, but I too remember watching it. I tried taping it back then, but something was wrong with the video tape I used and I never got it. Nice to see a few minutes of it here in Youtube at least. This one was decent, but it definitely doesn't beat "The Hurricane Andrew Story" - also a tv movie on NBC back aroudn the same time this came out.
this is the embarcadero freeway..

It's funny how the little kids team won over that one guys. Too bad he didn't live long enough to see the Giants win.

Does anyone know if the freeway section at 0:56 is the Central Freeway or the Embarcadero Freeway?
Enigmatism415 1 year ago

@derek20la
Do you happen to know which section it is? I'm guessing that the beige building with the blue stripe behind the freeway has since been demolished.
Enigmatism415 1 year ago
@Enigmatism415 It certainly looked like the Embarcadero entrance. I've often wondered the same thing.

Did northbound motorists have anyway to get off the viaduct prior to reaching the maze?
bradhig 1 year ago
If this is 2 minutes it's probably just showing what 17 seconds did in surrounding areas. It seemed longer than 17 though trust me.

These are actually really good special effects for a made for t.v. movie.

Never mind. It's Len Cariou that was driving the Toyota (little car). But it is a movie based up on how strong earthquakes can get!
Streetcar1743 2 years ago
Who was driving the small car following the pick-up truck? The actor, don Davis was driving the truck I believe.

42 people died under that viaduct back then...RIP.

Only the Supposed 6.5-7.5 Hayward Quake will tell us if the 280 freeway to Embarcadero can really withstand a Quake.
