Perhaps the most famous rescue ship in history. One can only wonder what it must have been like to be aboard Carpathia on the night of April 14th 1912. Her heroic effort to save the lives of others has moved her name to a very high place in maritime history. It's interesting that given all the new ships Cunard has built since her loss in 1918, that there has never been another Carpathia. They probably feel the name should be permanately retired, out of respect. I think they're right.

I just found out today that Carpathia sank. I was like "Hmm, I wonder what happened to Carpathia, was it taken apart or what?". I then look it up, and I see "Carpathia sinks in 1918". I'm like "WTF???". Then I tried looking for pictures online of the Carpathia wreckage but they don't have any pictures. R.I.P--- Carpathia. :(

@sacramentolove i remember watching on the history channel, when they were trying to find the wreck, which they did after discovering a wreck of a similar size ship to the carpathia,but i cant remember the name.

they took some footage of the wreck which was interesting, unfortunately i havent been able to find this footage or the documentary since, however i'll keep my eye out and let you know what it was called :)

@dlabay90 Ships are sunk on both sides of a war. The Wilhelm Gustloff, which was the worst shipwreck in world history with over 9,500 dead, was a German liner. Most of the dead were women and children. War is terrible regardless of the side one is on.

A clarification:RMS Carpathia wasn't the closest ship near RMS Titanic, but she was the first who received the SOS signal from the sinking ship. Infact another ship was in that seas, RMS Californian, but it has the radio off...

when i heard that a ship named carpathia saved passengers from titanic, i did some research straight away. since i was only young i was amazed with the carpathia, then only a month ago, on research again, i found out something heartbreaking... IT WAS BOMBED BY A GOD DAMN GERMAN U BOAT!! i was actually a little angry, and a little sad at the same time.

This ship departed from Trieste, it made port to Palermo in Sicily, in 1912 I save the fugitive ones of the Titanic, it is also the ship that my great-grandfathers bring in America... Luckily to my grandfather bright idea came to return in Italy.

Imagine if Carpathia wasn't there to rescue Titanic's lifeboats. They were in a middle of the ocean with no land for hundreds of miles. It would be horrible to live through the sinking only to drift until dying of exposure or starving to death.

Carpathia fulfilled a great mission of heroism that would've made its builders proud before going and surpassed everything it was built for. Rest in peace.
