I went to school with Kevin. As a matter of fact I was in the school musical with him in the 8th grade (he beat me out for the lead). We all knew he was going places back then.
this song was kicked off the Zep cover album...because no buddy (in hollywood) knows Kev...what a tragedy...but the luv of Kev goes on 4ever...thud...giraffee etc...ok i wrote this in the time of the song....
I, too, was blown away when I first heard Kevin's version of Kashmir. As screwyootube1 so eloquently put it, "it took some real balls" for him to do it. Not only did he do it, he knocked it out of the park. It had been awhile since I had thought of this song and I came across it, and found your video. I can see why Kevin liked it so much. It is amazing. It is serene and manic, calm and chaotic, just like his version of the song. I hope you are still doing videos, it is your calling.
Man, covering and Re-arranging one of Zeppelin's biggest classics took some real balls, but this was a work of genius! RIP, Kevin Gilbert... you are sorely missed!
A REAL tragic loss for music, IMHO! Everything I've heard him do, everything he's had a hand in, was/is pure gold! It's said he was going to audition for the lead singer role for Genesis, when he was found dead. I don't know if they would've picked him, or if it would've been a success, but personally, I think it would've been a brilliant move on their part!
This is so much better than the original.. I always loved the progression and the premise of the tune, but this really makes the song what is should be. Without Plant.. heh heh.... The double time is perfect.
I learned about Kevin several years ago when I acquired a bootleg copy of Giraffe's performance of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. I've been discovering more and more of his material since then. The Shaming of the True is a masterpiece. What an extraordinary talent and such a loss. Thanks for posting this awesome video!
In that Thud interview, Kevin said that he recorded this 'last night in my living room' and M&B were in complete denial that KG could have done all the tracks and mixing in one night. But her did. Amazing talent, horrific loss.
That was amazing!!! I have goose bumps. So glad to read that Kevin was able to see it and enjoy it before he passed and so sorry you didn't get to work with him as you have incredible talent. Thank you for sharing this.
Great version....and fantastic vid. Wish Kevin would have filmed a version before he left us...
Those that dont know...you can find copies of Kashmir on cd in a cardboard sleave, usually packaged with "Thud" and Kevin did thank Mark and Brian in the credits...He had them listen to it first before releasing it as I remember....
@nascargas I might add that "Thud", and subsequently, "Kashmir" are now out of print. I would search in places that recycle cd's....such as Dimple Records, or online like ebay.....
@nascargas If you want to know the story how it went, I'll tell you. This was a left-over track done for Enconium. We didn't know what to do with it. Then the night before the radio interview/show he decided to mix it and bring it in to play. Mark & Brian LOVED Kevin and they loved this track they played it all day, all week... some good justice for it being left off Enconium we thought. I played keys on it btw. I think Kev would have loved this video!
@sonicreality Dude...I am honored. Seriously. I first heard this track from Mark and Brian of course. I own Enconium...and I think now that album is complete knowing that story. I knew M and B loved Kevin. They still do. Every time he is brought up, they will spend a moment talking about that last interview...the song....
I was absolutly thrilled when I found my copy of it. It was still bound with the Thud Album....
And I am honored to talk with you if even in this forum.
@nascargas I'm very public because my company Sonic Reality makes samples for musicians and I'm always doing videos or talking on forums like KVR or my FB page. So I am around. Kevin was a mysterious puzzle that practically no one could fully figure out. For a certain period of time though I was with him almost every day... even the day he heard on his answering machine "I just called to say FU!" which he played back in disbelief over and over. When I heard it in the Kaviar song I just laughed.
I do have to agree with you. I didn't like it first, but his voice made wanna listen to it more and more and now I do like the main riff change, it gives the song a unique characteristic, like you couldn't mistake it for anything else.
@MisterLTAV It takes some getting used to and a willingness to listen to the song in a different light. The original is the original and apart from maybe being stretched out a little bit (probably because it was a double album) that song is perfect how it was. You could do a second rate cover of it the same but... more fun to completely change it around and do something new with it! A challenge anyway... and bold. I wasn't sure about the double time bit either at first but... it works too.
@nascargas FTR, this wasn't recorded in a living room. He recorded it in his studio "Lawnmower" and he played bass and some of the guitars that's it. He COULD have played everything though... and could have made it sound great in a living room. Just not the case here.
@sonicreality By the way...I just reposted this to my Facebook page...My peeps really liked it before...I think this track has a life all its own...not to mention the steller job on the vid...But I thought you should know there are those of us who continue to spread Kevin's music...
@nascargas I think that's great that people keep spreading the word on Kevin's music because he really was brilliant and for a lot of people that new discovery is one they will really appreciate. He definitely lives on through his music. By the way, my personal "everything" Facebook page is facebook(dot)com/davidkerzner I talk about all sorts of musical experiences including some KG stories. Any fan of this or of Kevin's is totally welcome to hang there.
Mark and Brian, LA morning dudes told a KG story about this. He came in for interview "crusty" and he had been up all night doing this, playing all the instruments himself. He was there to promote something else and the music co. loved this so much he recorded it for everyone to hear.
Kevin's death was a true tragedy...and yet because he didn't sell a gazillion records, he'll never get the respect or the gratitude he deserved. Sleep well my brother Kevin:) Thank you for posting, and creating this awesome video!
I asked him about a line in one of his songs "Goodness Gracious" where he says "The baby boomers had it all and wasted everything, now recess is almost over and they won't get off the swing" He said he got the line from a dream he had when he was a kid where he was playing at recess and Aerosmith was playing on the swings and it turned into a nightmare because he knew that they wouldn't get off before the bell.
Thank you so much for posting this. We are kindred in how the song resonated upon first listen, and it's been forever since I've heard it. The video honors the work.

man, as much as i like the cover's beginning, i gotta say i don't particularly agree with changing the time signature when the drums come in.
I dunno
to me the polyrhythm is what makes the song heavy.
great video though.

I agree.
Kevin's legacy is celebrated among the few who somehow were fortunate enough to find his music.
But all the KG fans I know
deeply embrace his work and I think that's what he probably would have wanted.
Them and Sheryl Crow fans who don't realize his massive contributions! Now, velvetgrape, how about a video for 'Shadow Self?'
