Agreed, our "entertainment" industry runs on 24/7 technological overload today, and yet couldn't produce a work of depth or substance if they had to. Much of it is due to the fact that the people who ran the entertainment industry in the 40s-70s came up influenced by the European Moderns, a generation driven by deeply thoughtful art in all its many forms. Today, the people who dictate entertainment have no such sophistication, turds with no taste and too much money. Their audiences are the same.
Amazing! One would think that with technology advancements programs would only improve yet television for children today has no substance. When was the last time CBS, ABC, or NBC won any awards for quality?
This was one of my favorite series to watch while growing up. Back then, children's programming back in the 1960s and 1970s was so much funnier- and smarter, indeed. Today's programs for kids are too dumbed down- and dare I say too sensitized and PC . There will probably never be another Kukla, Fran, and Ollie, and that's pretty sad, to be honest.
Brings a tear to my eye.... As a kid and no matter what I was doing, I would ALWAYS make sure on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 that I would put the the t.v. on to watch this beautiful show!!!! I feel so sorry for the GARBGE kids have to watch now days!
I remember, back in the '60's, running home from school as fast as I could so I wouldn't miss The Children's Film Festival. Just what the Hell happened, anyway!?
I remember watching this on Saturdays as a kid. I saw stuff I'd never seen anywhere else before or since, and looking back I think it really gave me a taste for foreign film. A concept like this should be revived, there are lots of great films for kids from all over the world that don't get much play here. Even the excellent animated "Snow Queen" from Russia is forgotten today, and it's an amazing work of art.
I was born in 1961 and remember Children's Film Festival. One film was about this young European boy who befriended a fish in a pond. I think the film was dubbed in English. I also remember the Radio Free Europe commercials. Yes I show my age proudly - I'm 50 now.
Quite Unique And Original!! The following opening of "The CBS Children's Film Festival" was televised in black and white. The colorized opening of this program did not became a fixture on Saturday afternoons until the start of the 1969-1970 Television Season. Well Done!! A Fabulous 6!! Oh how I would yearn for a return of this program.
Remember when the Mets were rained out, WOR religiously would sometimes air The Man of a Thousand Faces, or Phantom of the Opera with Claude Raines?Loved Met's rain outs. I was a big Mets fan too.
I think it was Ch. 5 had a ghetto version of the CBS C'sFilmFest, or it might have been on the show itself, short a film about a street gang member who in a gang fight gets his belly split open with a knife and he "recounts' his gang life in flash back. Maybe it was PBS? Yeah, I know, too deep down memory lane. But I remember some these "children" films vividly.
This was the part of the day that bummed me out when all the cartoons had aired and there were no cool classic monster and sci-fi movies on WOR's Saturday 10 am triple monster features you were stuck with the CBS Children's film fest, or Wide World of Sports! Until Ch. 5 Ku Fu theater premiered, and everything changed.
Any POLKA MUSIC RECORD COMMERCIALS in the near future??
Well, there was always American Bandstand or Soul Train. But yeah, that could be a pretty dull part of Saturday afternoon. Sundays were likewise boring after the Abbott & Costello movie was finished on WPIX. Things wouldn't pick up either day until maybe Space: 1999 or Mission: Impossible much later.
I used to skip over this- a little mild mannered for me-sort of what you were told to watch but didn't WANT to watch.Or maybe I was just a little idiot.I guess by time I was 12 it wasn't my soul I wanted elevated, it was something else. Now there are pills for that.
"Testadirapa" (1965) was a staple of the "FILM FESTIVAL", and was repeated several times over the years, along with "Skinny and Fatty" (1959) and "Hand In Hand" (1960).
This began as an occasional series in the summer of '67, and a weekly series at 1pm(et) on Saturday afternoons in the fall of '71. Kukla, Fran and Ollie were the hosts through 1977- then it became "THE CBS SATURDAY FILM FESTIVAL" (with Fran Allison limited to voice-overs only) through 1984. The format was simple: K, F & O would appear on videotape, and engage in some lighthearted banter before introducing the "feature presentation' (usually edited to fit a one-hour time period).
@DanZero77 what year were you born? great to see you appreciate this stuff. i appreciate stuff from the 60s becuase so much the shows re-ran well into the late 60s when i was a kid. (born in 61, btw)
@tapthatt2012 I was born in 1977 hence my username. I found out that the CBS Childrens Film Festival was run until 1984, but I don't remember ever seeing it. I understand that it was a popular series when it was on. The YT user know as "CBSCFFestival" has clips from some of the films featured on the show. I have loved seeing the stuff you posted from the 60s, like the WNEW clips!
@tapthatt2012 Really, from 1984? That's great. I bet the opens are different. It's too bad this show didn't last any longer for me to remember it. Those clips are pretty good.
