When they jump, they jump OUT as far as possible. That means that when they drop, they swing like a pendulum, and kind of scrape along the ground. Much safer than spear diving in to it at 90 degrees. Also, it looks like they are using their legs as shock absorbers to reduce the speed at which they hit the ground. Maybe that is why they bend the leg during the jump.

ok....for one thing....the land diving is a stupid thing to do...(but vanuatu is not stupid)do you even know wat land diving is?....it is something that a certain religion must do to earn eternal life so. if they jump hit there head on the ground and not die then they are saved....if they hit there head and die then they are going to hell.....somthing like that....so just so you know.....its not some extreme sport!

Not stupid, but it achieves nothing of a tangible nature. In that way it is stupid to some. But I think maybe that from a psychological point of view it is not a stupid thing at all. Until you risk your most valuable possession, your life, you can not truly say that you appreciate what life you have.
Imagine the social benefit within the tribal community, & how proud you would be to stare into the depths of death and triumph.
You would be fearless after that.

AMAZING spectacle. I was there for 12 months but was too busy to see this myself.
I worked with a guy who had to return to his island to take part in the jump. I thought he was joking until I saw the photos.
I love Vanuatu and its people.
A very big thank you to them for making me happy while I was working there.
