quite true that Reynolds was against slavery. Nevertheless, the theme holds -- most movies showing "last Confederate" type characters had the hero against slavery. "Jose Wales" with Clint Eastwood is a great example of the genre.

The series was well done but lacked innovation (too many repeats of the "old west" theme). It was excellent for it's portrayal of strong women and decent "hard science fiction".  A little too much the "last Confederate". Good Sci Fi always dares to address serious political and social issues. The best presents the issues without preaching or even necessarily choosing a "side".

Firefly was really special. I miss it very much though i have seen it hundreds of times. And Serenity is my all-time favourite movie. The way it was filmed and the story and the characters - just beautiful. they are all good people in real life. Summer is the main reason I watch Dollhouse today.
