The reason that these people keep killing is because they have weapons (which means guns). Weapons enable them to do kill. You have no idea how harmful guns are, do you? The rebels in Darfur are not the ones committing the genocide. The perpetrators are the group known as the Janjaweed, consisting mostly of members of Arab nomadic tribes. The Sudanese government has denied helping them but there is evidence that the gov't has provided them with weapons, etc.
Much like in Rwanda, the genocide is fueled by hatred for the rebel groups and all the people who are similar to them. In this case that means the blacks of Darfur, so they are the victims.

I have seen no comments on what we can actually do to help this situation in darfur. Does a monetary donation suggice?Perhaps we can all try to ask the presidential candidates what they would do when they get elected to stop this genocide, and then put pressure on them to actually follow thru.
Asking the presidential candidates about what they will do on Darfur is definitely a great step. There are also a number of demonstrations around the country in September that you can participate in that are hosted by Save Darfur, Amnesty International, American Jewish World Service and others. My dad was sent to Sudan to help with agriculture in that country, last year. He was forced to leave because rebels began killing peacekeepers. I don't understand how the media can call what is happening there, genocide -- it's a war. In Addition, both sides of the conflict are black; its not Arab against Black. To say free will is the reason behind these happenings is an extremely naive statment. These things happen because of various reasons. What stems the problems cannot be answered by any one theory. This isnt happening because there is an absense of God in Africa. Maybe time might be better spent disscussing ways to end and prevent further violence, instead of trying to make logic and point a finger at God or any other one problem. It's a systematic problem, its is a system of problems.

You can just tell when he's talking about it that he's saying what people want him to say and not being truthful about helping. Al Qaeda and Taliban combined are responsible for around 9,000 deaths. thats 1/44th of the deaths in Darfur.

Yes both sides supposedly want to end it peacefully, but neither is willing to give in therefore the killings continue. I believe the rebels are the "Bad guys" (Sorry for lack of terminology) and the government is allowing it to happen. Darfur wasnt the beggining of this crisis this is the third genocide in Sudan. The first victims were the inhabitants of the Nuba Mountains of central Sudan. According to Gregory Stanton of Genocide Watch, The Nuba were grouped into Peace Villages, where their women were systematically raped by Arab men, their children stolen to serve as slaves and at least 100,000people disappeared, never to be seen again. The U.N. supports the genocides thru regulations requiring the people be disarmed

The rebels in Darfur are not the ones committing the genocide. The perpetrators are the group known as the Janjaweed, consisting mostly of members of Arab nomadic tribes. The Sudanese government has denied helping them but there is evidence that the gov't has provided them with weapons, etc.
Much like in Rwanda, the genocide is fueled by hatred for the rebel groups and all the people who are similar to them. In this case that means the blacks of Darfur, so they are the victims.

There are also a number of demonstrations around the country in September that you can participate in that are hosted by Save Darfur, Amnesty International, American Jewish World Service and others. My dad was sent to Sudan to help with agriculture in that country, last year. He was forced to leave because rebels began killing peacekeepers. I don't understand how the media can call what is happening there, genocide -- it's a war. In Addition, both sides of the conflict are black; its not Arab against Black. One group is considered "Arab" because they are Muslims and speak Arabic. Ethnically they are black... Simply Google image: "Janjaweed."

How the hell is Darfur the US's responsibility the US isn't doin shit, no government is, if a few of the powerful government(I.E US, Canada, Britain) did something about it, those poor Sudanese people wouldnt be getting killed or raped daily. We kind of need to take care of our own country first. Foriegners expect certain things of this country that just aren't so, but could be if we actually wanted to do something about it. Freedom is not Free, and not everyone is treated equally.

Why not blame colonialism instead of America for Africa's current situation. You can easily blame Belgium for siding with the tutsi during their occupation post WW2 and leading to Hutu revolt. Why must america be the world's janitor and clean up the messes of others. Africa is in a state Europe was in in the Dark Ages. Let them sort out their own issues and let them instill their own government over time. Without turmoil there is no progress.

A trillion dollar deficit, broken border control, strong foreign market competition, these issues should come first before any foreign policy is adopted. America should be America's first concern and not Darfur, not Iraq, and not Iran.

if you want to blame belgium, fine by me but you have to know that congo was better when we were there. we build school, transport, hospitals... ok, cruelty happened (apartheid, torture,...) and that was wrong. But a lot of children went to school, economy was not that bad,.... they wanted to be independent, we gave it to them... see what happened.. corruption everywhere, killing other people, rapes, no medication..

Why don't we just plunge ourselves into further deficit for a temporary African solution? What happens when our money runs out? We leave Africa to itself and you see that nothing has infact changed. Money is a temporary solution. Africa is steeped well into the Dark Ages when it comes to development.

Surely I would die, but I would die fighting the good fight. There needs to be more coverage of this here in The States. I think most Americans must be weighed down with the Iraq war. Why else would we not be doing more to pressure the government of Sudan? Did Governor Richardson's visit there do no good?
