I understood that Shenzi was a girl ever since I first watched the movie because I watched Animal Planet as a kid and saw a whole program on Hyenas.

That was also why I sympathized most with the Hyenas and couldn't quite figure how the Lions were supposed to be good guys. lol

From the first time I ever watched The Lion King, I always thought Shenzi was a guy Hyena until I saw Whoopi Goldburg's name on the end credits. BTW I was 2 when I first watched the movie.

I don't know why Disney made a movie only about The Lion King.
