Could someone clever translate the french doctor who bit and then we could like it so that it would be one of the top comments and us not so clever bill bailey lovers could understand it. Weyhey!
@thok3 "It's him - Dr Who. He travels in the Tardis - the fantastic Space Telephone Box. The inside is much bigger than the outside. That is the mystery of Dr Who. The leader of the Daleks is called Davros. He wants to control the universe, he wants to control everyone but he will never control the universe. Dr Who is superior to the Daleks. He laughs - ha ha ha - I am Dr Who. The Daleks cannot climb the stairs. It is a tragedy for the Daleks - oh damn it! (cont.....)
@thok3 Admittedly it loses a lot of its humour when translated literally, most of the joke is the accopanying music and the way he says it, but roughly translated- "It's him...Dr Who. He travels in the Tardis. The telephone box, fantasicly spacious (or possibly fantastic in space depending on translation). The interior is a lot bigger than the exterior. And that is the mystery of Dr Who.
@thok3 (continued) The chief of the Daleks is called Davaros. He wants to control the universe, all the world he wants to control. He wants to control the universe right now. With the daleks, the doctor is superior. He laughs, hahaha, I am Dr Who. The daleks cannot go up stairs, it's a tragedy for the daleks. Exterminate, exterminate, exterminate. No, you cannot, because I am Dr Who!"
Much of BB's act involves body language and facial expression, which he uses to perfection. Unfortunately, however, the brainless cunts who produced this show decided that, for some inexplicable reason, filming the orchestra was far more entertaining than filming Bill (save for the occasional tantalising glimpse). You know I'm right - now thumb me up or I'll cut your bollocks off.
@1ucasvb they're exactly the same, the only difference is that bailey uses that cool sounding thingy, listen to the whole song you dont really need any musical talent to realize that they are the same notes. you might be mislead because the cool sounding thingy has a pitch above the other instruments with an octave or so
@duckiesv I'm not even comparing the parts with the theremin. Give me the exact time, in that Holst's Neptune video you linked me (just so we're on the same page), that corresponds to the music played here at 18:08 to 18:40, and 19:11 to 19:30. Both sections don't involve Bailey playing the theremin.
I agree they are similar, but they're hardly exactly the same.
@duckiesv Bailey is NOT playing the theremin in those two intervals I gave you. If you understood how the instrument is played, you'd know that. As long as his hand is within the left antenna (the loop), the instrument is silent. The straight antenna controls pitch, and there's no F being played at that pitch coming from the theremin. The high note you hear comes from the violins in tremelo. If the tremolo was coming from the theremin, you would see Bailey's right hand shaking slightly.
@1ucasvb myes, was not paying attention to the left hand there :)) but the other parts, in witch i left the times in the song, are the same notes, it's basically the same song, but some of the notes are in higher octaves
@duckiesv The melody played by the french horns at 18:19 in the Jellyfish doesn't exist in Neptune, for instance. Overall, the compositions are similar, but they are really not the same thing.
I was watching Graham Norton on here, with Bill Bailey as one of the guests, this was mentioned and clip shown, it looks rather good. I wanted to see it now, and low and behold in the side bar, a link to this...Gods Bless you GoodW0lf, and praise be to the powerful internet.
Comedy mixed with orchestral music - how fantastic! That as worth an hour out of my time. Not too impressed about his comparrison with the oboe to the clarinet, though - I'm a clarinetist and they are conical, not cylindrical!
@astroboirap I don't think they were black. Blacks are traditionally associated with jazzy music. You find the connection in the 1920s-1930s USA when jazz was regarded as dangerous and people like Louis Armstrong and Count Basie were jazzing it out. Via connection, "dangerous blacks" have "dangerous jazz". In the same sense, jazz is also considered as "primal" music, like "let loose and have some fun!". That's why it's being connected to the beautiful and dangerous femme fatale
@Kinekun c'mon everytime some funky jive sinister music comes one its always black people! dunno why, maybe its a blaxploitation thing. anyways whenever i hear some funky sinistet jazz in a old skool crime movie i know the camera is gonna cut to some random ghetto with a bunch of sharply dressed black villians in flares
@astorpolsen at the end of the piece, Bill says "Wait a minute, Emmerdale doesn't have an Oboe in it!" -> it's from a televesion series called "Emmerdale".
@mickcooper11 Me too. There's a musical comedian by the name of Tim Mnchin who recently did a tour with an orchestra, in which the whole orchestra have to shout fucker. It made me laugh sooo much!
The cowbells actually looks like a really fun game you could do with other musicians. Label the notes on top and then take turns in using the bells to create harmonies.
@MrHitler27 Who do you think you're kidding, Mr Hitler[27]? It's Thus spake Zarathustra/Also sprach Zarathustra. AKA the theme to 2001 as others have pointed out.
@2bsom1 - I disagree, I think its a great way of showing the fundamentals of the Orchestra and in explaining to the Public how Music Works in TV Shows in a funny way. Great Stuff.
