to me uncle johnny is the best kumu hula of all time because every single one of the stories come to life when these girls are dancing...i remember seeing this and getting chicken skin and no matter how many times i see it...i still get chicken skin because i can really feel everything through the dance..it may sound weird but its the only way i can describe it,,,but there is so much power in this piece...mahalo plenty for the inspiration
Uncle Johnny is often criticized for breaking with hula orthodoxy and often being non traditional in the eyes of those who think that hula should not evolve beyond what was being used in the 1800's and prior. But if you ask me, I say that it is his critics that are being narrow minded. Hula tells a story, and must therefore be able to incorporate new methods and techniques for telling non traditional stories through a new mele such as this one that Uncle Johnny Lum Ho composed.
Kumu Lum Ho and the halau, need no placement. There approach is not meant to be judged, instead it is meant to inspire... AND that is exactly what it does...
Kumu Johnny Lum Ho is a visionary beyond our present time. Everything in his Kahiko presentation challenges the status quo. Those that see the invisible can do the impossible. Mahalo nui for your gift Kumu, and keep inspiring us. Mahalo...
ok which one of them pissed off the judges cause no hands down they should have won! this group diliverd and amazing auana and kahiko!!! wat the heck is wrong with the judges!...i was crushed wen i found out they didnt win let alone place!!! grrrrr..
when i was in molokai i wanted to go very bad to kalaupapa, this is something very sad what happened to them. and seeing this is like wow put tears in my eyes. i love it very much
This is a MUST SEE! A hula about the leper's colony in Kalaupapa, Molokai.
It tells the story of King Lunalino signing a decree to isolate leprosy patients, the patient's adjustment to life on the peninsula, and finally to being cured of the disease....gave the audience goosebumps!
oh this hula is mean, im not hawaiian but bro, im loving the dance moves and the harmony in the mele, its really haunting!!

My people of Hawaii, the essence of Aloha still lives on strong. To experience the MANA (power), attend a Merrie Manarch Festival...
