The lit part of the moon is always towards the sun even from our perspective. As it gets closer to setting, the lit part will tilt downward. The effect will be greater at lower latitudes which explains why you notice it more in Taiwan than Canada.
@chitlitlah i think it might have more to do with the angle you look at it from ... for ex if you take a person on the north pole and put them on the south pole with out changing their orientation to the universe they would be standing on their head... but i could be wrong ;)

It's because of the Earth's tilt. During the summer, it looks more like a c, and during the winter it looks more like a u. Because Earth's tilt stays the same, but the suns position changed relatively (also causing seasons). So when we move from one side of the sun to the other side, the tilt changes relatively, causing the apparent path of the moon to shift. Which cause it to look differently.

From where I live in Australia, if you look up the sky the moon orbits northern sphere of the sky. In northern hemisphere it would orbit southern sphere. But in Taiwan, it probably orbits almost directly over head pretty much all year round because its pretty close to equator. Now if you move up to Hokkaido then there's significant difference.
Try to explain this: In Canada(or close to the poles) when you can see the moon and the sun at the same time, if you look at the moon you see that the angle the light hits it isn't in line with the position of the sun.
It's simple but it takes a bit understanding of the physics.

Imagine your self flying away from the earth backwards still looking at the moon and the sun, when you get far enough that you see the earth as a sphere in front of you then you'll probably get the picture.

The moon does change depending on where you are. For example if you took a picture from the UK, then one from Australia. The two pictures would be the same but the southern hemisphere one would be upside down.

In short the C (or U) shape of the moon is cause by reflected light from the sun bouncing back to earth and the exact orientation of the Sun Earth and Moon. Since the Earth is tilted on its access the moon doesn't follow along the equator and can at some times track along the night sky straight down towards the horizon. This tracking motion will look different according to what latitude u are viewing from. And will look like a U shape at latitudes where the moon tracks more vertical.

@GregKJr You're just getting fooled by standing on the earth and you see the earth as a flat disc when it's in fact spherical. Imagine your self flying away from the earth backwards still looking at the moon and the sun, when you get far enough that you see the earth as a sphere in front of you then you'll probably get the picture.

@bennett346 - Herro. Garbage trucks play music in Taiwan to notify residents that they're coming by. A few times a week, people will hear the music, gather their trash, and wait along the sidewalk to throw it in the passing truck. (All this instead of having large communal dumpsters.)
When I was a kid they played "Fur Elise." Kinda nice.

The moon does change depending on where you are. For example if you took a picture from the UK, then one from Australia. The two pictures would be the same but the southern hemisphere one would be upside down.

@sbslusher the garbage truck... its to let peopl know they are coming to pick up trash. There are no wheeling bins in Taiwan you just throw your trash in the truck.

gambling only makes sense (to me at least) when a person is in the position of influencing the outcome...like with the pool story. Why gamble, say, against a slot machine or a lottery ticket? Seems to me thats a case of emotion ("feeling" lucky) overcoming reason (the odds never change...they will always be miniscule--like picking a needle from a haystack)

In short the C (or U) shape of the moon is cause by reflected light from the sun bouncing back to earth and the exact orientation of the Sun Earth and Moon. Since the Earth is tilted on its access the moon doesn't follow along the equator and can at some times track along the night sky straight down towards the horizon. This tracking motion will look different according to what latitude u are viewing from. And will look like a U shape at latitudes where the moon tracks more vertical.
