This song got a lot of a.m radio play on the soul stations in Philly during 1966. Back then there were always brother's playing congos and bongos on the street and in the park. Mongo Santamria was hot and we were all doing the Afro Cuban.
I remember this from Crooklyn. Wonderful to come back to it after getting into the Boogaloo sound of Joe Cuba, Ray Barretto, El Bobo, Mongo Santamaria, et al. If you dig this sound, start exploring these guys.
The first time I heard this on Crooklyn I honestly thought he was singing "i'll never go back to chocha,"... U know because he was dancing with rupaul....
Corso on East 86th was definitely one of the great places to go dancing. Cheetah was THE club, and Symphony Syd did his last NY radio broadcast from there before he moved to Fla. You can find a podcast of it on the Fania website. And if you liked merengue, the CLUB in the 80's (I think?) was Club Broadway, upstairs on Broadway and 95th. Isnt Latin Bugalu just the best!!
I miss all this good music. I came up during the 60's and 70's and the music was GREAT. I never really got enough latin music. I remember Frankie Crocker was starting to play alot of it then he left the station he was on.
Oh yeah- for many of the brothers in NYC, this was our introduction to Latin music. This song was one of the first to cross over on the radio (WWRL 1600). When the Black brothers and Latino brothers weren't rumbling, we were partying together.Once you learned the Latin dances, you had a better chance with some of those pretty Latinas. (I personally preferred the partying.)
@emmettk We were one through music, latinos and African- Americans. The drum was the call to unity. But I had grown up listening to latin music way before WWRL. Symphony Sid was the man who brought Mambo (or salsa to the younger crowd) to the forefront in the New York clubs. Even Perez Prado could get down when he wanted. But, it was the work of Cal Tjader with Mongo Santamaria that made it an art form for me. What were the other clubs besides "El Corso" that we used to go to? I can't remember.
I'll never go back to Georgia.
@garlicdill Its my understanding they had never been to Georgia. This was made up. Look it up in WiKi in Google that state; The "Never Go Back To Georgia" chant was taken from Dizzy Gillespie's intro to the seminal Afro-Cuban tune, "Manteca". Sabater later revealed that "none of us had ever been to Georgia

I remember Joe Cuba playing in Bay Ridge Brooklyn. His sound was a breath of fresh air. They played in a bunch of small clubs around the 5 boroughs of N.Y. I still have his music. One of the great Latin Jazz groups.
Well, I am sure the Georgia Department of Tourism is not adopting it as their promo song......but what a hit it was back then. Gracias Maestro Joe Cuba, Cheo, Jimmy Sabater, y todos!! A sextet that ruled and sounded like an orchestra.

En 1966, el sexteto lanzó Estamos haciendo algo bien/ We must be doing something Right. I¿ll never go back to Georgia».

I first heard this song when I was 10, from the Crooklyn soundtrack. I thought it was the most bizarre song ever and it never seemed to end! It fit in well with the movie though, in the scene when RuPaul is dancing with the man in the store and her (in)famous line: "I ain't no puta! I'm Connie, I keeps my panty clean". :D
There is a track on this album titled "My wonderful you." I know the guy who wrote it. And would love to have a listen. Any chance of a post? It would be most appreciated. Thanks
Wha chu talking bout tito you ain't nothing but a damn PUERTO RICAN! LOL god i love that movie. I also had the pleasure of being exposed to Joe Cuba and other afro latino music as a little girl by my grandfather. What great memories :)

Rest in Peace in Salsa Heaven Joe. Thanks for the great music you gave us. I grew up listening to your uniques style. It only brings great memories of my youth. Thank you again.

I love Crooklyn lol... Rupaul was in the part where they were playing this. "What you talkin bout Tito. I ain't no punta I keeps my panty clean!." lol
The chorus line is a take-off from a phrase pronounced by Dizzie Gillespie. There was trouble in that State (uprisings and all that), so he said that now-famous phrase: I'll never go back to Georgia!. That seemed to spring a feeling of identificacion with the black cause, among the black crowd that danced to the J.C. Sextet, and that made the song stand out among these people.

Great memories of dancing with my boogaloo steps back in Loiza Aldea, PR. Had all of us whistling to the jam. Thanks for sharing, Love it.
