I LOVE your videos but they're hard to watch because the audio levels are all over the place. The songs that you play are so much louder than your commentary.
This is also my favorite song from Xanadu. I could listen to it all day long. It's the song I use for my blogs! Love it!! Thanks for the great deconstruction! :)
I have been listening to Xanadu since I was nine (in 1980) and have been singing the lyric "...Monte Carlo, Shortbread Lamb" without ever thinking it was weird. Until now.
Only the second post to answer your lyrical question, it is "Shard End and"
Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra fame grew up in a council house at 368 Shard End Crescent in Shard End. The lyrics to the ELO song 'All Over the World' mention Shard End along with cities like London, Paris, Amsterdam, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo. Roger Taylor (drummer of Duran Duran) also lived on Shard End Crescent until the age of 11.
Hey Seth, What are the three instruments in the orchestra? Piano, Synth and Drum/percussion??? It sounds so full for such little instrumentation. let me know :-)
@Seth: LOVE Annie Golden... saw her go on for Mary Testa once, and several times as Calliope on tour, but I never noticed that was her singing that backup line.
BREAKING: Seth just said "Listen to the cool drum part"! That means, you thought the drum part had some musical value to it -- percussion DOES equal music!
Your confusion about the city reminds me of being in Little Shop of Horrors in high school and someone asking where the hell Peoria is ("eat Cleveland, and Des Moines, and Peoria, and New York..."). Cue awkward silence.
I love your shirt. I've wanted it for a while.

Seth, I don't think it's that "old people" don't riff--it's just this particular old person.

I'm still sad that Cheyenne Jackson was doing Damn Yankees at City Center the weekend I saw Xanadu. I missed out!

Oh Seth, you've done it again. You've made me look at a song that I'm already familiar with in a different light.
