When I was kid I used to have in an old tape an instrumental version of "What's new" with piano and saxophone (without vocals) which was my favorite!! Does anyone know anything about this version and where I can find it??? I'd really like to have it back again!
I once owned the original Decca recording of "I'm Free". It was a great instrumental piece however the lyrics only added greater popularity to it. I played it over and over again until the record wore out. Wonder if the original is still around someplace?
She said when she was working to record this that, she already had voice control, but couldn't get over how much more she needed in order to do the standards. Great cover of a great song.
Linda Ronstadt is BAR NONE the finest interpreter of songs EVER in the history of recording artists using that unmistakably awesome voice of hers and applying it to ANY GENRE of music....she has a knack for taking someone else's song, adding her own flavor and spicing it up to produce a hit record, be it rock, country, easy listening, mariachi, contemporary classics, or pop - SHE'S THE BOMB! Notice the striking resemblance of her (early photos) with another rising pop sensation - Selena Gomez.
I l;oved it! It reminded me ofthe old classic "Casablanca", the way it started. Wow. Thanks for posting this. It is one of my very favorite songs, and thank you, to the fellow that wrote the history of the song. . . going back to the big band era, when bob crosby was around. I love the old war-time sounds. The kids, these days, don't know what they're missing. Thanks again!
As incredible as Linda and this song are. The behind the scenes story is even better. The gentleman playing Linda's love interest is Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar. He is a well respected guitarist who has played for Linda as well as James Taylor, Carol King, and Don Henly.Take a google trip on his name and see what an incredible career he has had in the music industry
Linda at 65 looks just as great and still with it. We all get old but it's what we leave behind that counts, and Linda has left the world with her voice and music that will last forever ! A very talented, very smart, giving LADY ! I'm gonna see her some day,,that's for sure.
Love this perfectly put together woman forever. Man if we had met 30 years ago we would have been married since,,,,,,,what a voice the angles are jealous of,,,,missed her in Vancouver last year,,damnn
Kuddos to Ira&George Gerswin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and many others who wrote these wonderful masterpieces and Nelson Riddle who arranged these new versions. Great Job!!
Till Death, Do You Park? Tear drops on the window pane Gather ye flowers of disdain Autumn rains and chill bane Dropping our eyes not to explain A house divided, A house in pain The war began with the autumn rains Ex-spouses sent to hollowed plains In a foreign land to hold remains Seeking legality in lovers' lanes.
two words, superb and timeless. linda's version is coming up on the 30 year old mark and it is as fresh today as it was in 1983. music such as this transcends the generations.
"What's New" is a great song, that here Linda Rondstadt sings beautifully! This is a song that is on Frank Sinatra's album called "Only the Lonely." Linda does the song with the same delicacy and beauty that the song deserves. She has a great vocal ability and is deserving of great acclaim.
THAT MAN THAT SHE IS SINGING TO IN THE VIDEO IS HOT!!!! I COULD IMAGINE HIM STRIPPING DOWN TO HIS BOXERS A SHIRT AND GARTERS AND DRESS SOCKS !!! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
@dannys2222 lol.....you know i never really paid him that much attention but seeing this video again i'm inclined to agree with you, that guy IS a bit of a yum yum!
Thank you for posting this... According to my mom, my grandfather, Jim Murdock managed Bob Crosby and the Bobcats for a while. I've only know Bob Haggart as Uncle Bobby. I was fortunate enough to visit with him and his lovely wife, my aunt Windy when he came to play 3 piece for one of the first Cherry Blossom Festivals held in Macon, GA. He could still play beautifully and it was a blessing to me to hear him play.
I discovered this song through a choral rendition done by my high school's choraliers. It moved me and I haven't been able to get it out of my mind. What a lovely woman and a lovely message.
It is unfortunate. At that time we didn't have the luxury of bringing the big band into
screen production for television afforded by Buble and Foster. Otherwise, Riddles orghestra featuring Ronstadt would have been a huge success. Nelson's powerhouse in it's organization has alot of latitude when comes to sound 40's music intrepretation and duplication. Rondstadt's problem, I think was in the image department. She's not very much on the "Go Get-um Gal" thing.
what a fantastic way to re-introduce the great american songbook to the world. ronstadt took a chance - think she succeeded. great music, great lyrics, great orchestrations. . . and, listen a second time and you'll find the orchestra is following ronstadt! the orchestra hangs on her words. she's leading the orchestra - a talent very few singers have.
Linda's 64th birthday is July 15 ,,,After all she has given to us maybe we should give something back to her!
I would like to propse that every year on July 15 th,,,should be named "" LINDA RONSTADT DAY "" everywhere she has performed. Maybe let your local radio station know what we are doing and soon. I think she deserves it totally.
This is simply the " THE BEST VIDEO " I have ever seen. I didn't know it was out there untill last month when I saw it on youtube. Befrore this I thought I had seen all of the Linda Ronstadt videos and listened to all of her recordings,,BUT,,this one is by far out of everyone's reach to make better. She is in a class of her own with this one. No wonder Nelson Riddle died with a smile on his face in 1986 having writtin this and having Linda Ronstadt perform it on video. The most gorgeous woman
i always loved this girl and her music. she does a butiful job of this song iam 61 and if i died tommor and whent to heven i know all the angels would sing like her and look like her loved her since blue byou god i love the way she sings linda i love you
Linda Rostadt was mericlessly razzed for switching from pop to classic at the time in her career but she showed how timeless really good songs can be and she did a very good job on this one..
I also didn't remember seeing a video for this and am appreciative now. What a class act and a very classy music video. She's as intelligent and courageous as she is magnificently talented!
Linda won me over with the standards when I heard this-her version of "my funny valentine" is the most beautiful rendition ever. I wish she would record more classics-her voice is so appropriate-in other words she can SING.

They dont write songs like this anymore, grown up, mature, insightful, romantic, heart felt.
And this is because we dont have the songwriters. Only writers turning out immature junk for the kids.

Ok, this is a simple tune. The magic, the spine tingling of the third verse is all Linda.

This version is nearly as good as Sinatra's version with Nelson Riddle on Only The Lonely. Nicely done by Rondstadt/Riddle.
