I remember watching all the ice skating competitions I could on basic stations (minus the cable my parents refused to have in the house.....lol) anyway I remember when the whole thing started with Christina Yamaguchi and Oksawna (spelling?), Nancy and Tonya and to see this beautiful performance then a couple years later the assault on Nancy was such a shame!!! One of the most amazing things I've ever seen. And I have no idea what it is she's supposed to have done...I just heard her mentioned in a Robin Williams stand up...

And if you did happen to be on one of the videos selected for critique on the World's Dumbest, it would speak volumes more about you as an individual, than it does about her as a commentator.

She had so much potential. But she got scared and tried to push it but couldn't. I'm glad Shes found happiness but being reduced to a d- list celebrity show that comments on dumb people...it breaks my heart.

She did more for figure skating than Kwan could dream of...and in fact....Tonya actually paved the way for Kwan. Kwan OWES her!!! Big Time!!
@icesk876543210 i always had the feeling her husband and his buddy took it upon themselves. she knew they had done it, but didn't want any part of it and tried to cover up. and in the end, she paid for it.
@tranurse She also was naive enough to leave the papers with her handwriting about things in that bar trash can.:(I'm glad she has found happiness with her hubby and new son.Nicole Bobeck stole money from a friend's house and the USFSA just slapped her wrist.
The greatest athletic female figure skater the US will ever see. There were and are better artistic skaters (male and female), but with all the rule changes in skating the last few years, I think it's safe to say that America will never see another woman skate athletically the way Tonya did (or on a worldwide scale, Midori Ito) ever again.
Harding, from French name 'Hardi' translated as 'Fool Hardy' A person who is brave, daring but, lacking judgment, So their ambitions, escapades land them in trouble, it's said. Could be, Tonya's path was already written into her blood. But what great skating!!
Say what you want. It's unfortunate the path her life took, but she was absolutely one of the best skaters this country ever had, and no matter what else happened afterwards, nobody, but nobody can take this away from her!
@babyboo3571 No, you chill. You,s shit stick, purple girl, are your lips purple you know what I mean? You need to use a vibrator and chill yourself out. O. Too bad this triumph and history made was overshadowed by the fact that I can't remember her other than the figure skater that needed to cheat and hire a hit man to take out an opponent.
I'd rather remember her for this, what she needed was someone to help her with image and everything besides the skating because in the end thats part of it. This person accomplished more than 99% of those who call her names
Well, I can't stand Tonya Harding. But I also gotta give credit where it is due. There is no question that she was an especially gifted figure skater.
@victoriaindigo Agreed! She had more athletic talent than ANY american ladies skater in history. Too bad she threw it all away in a stupid way... But wow, look at that triple axel.
This performance made her a hero to me. She was the underdog that barked the loudest. She deserved this win and got it. Most people are not made for the public eye or power or fame or money. She had a period of notoriety but her destiny pointed somewhere else. She is lucky because she is back on track now to be the person she was born to be. She still has that gold medal and her name in the record book and nothing can take that away.
Too bad how things turned out for this phenom skater. Strong, solid, controlled in her moves. Just shows you how important the right company is to a person. To be at this level of competition, there has been some major sacrifice in time, money and practice, and all to be lost at in the hands of the wrong associates.. Apparently, her upbringing was hard, and she made it this far on her own will; she could have taken the gold with her ability! She had her fans.
@teedeeiss One can't get to be an elite skater without major commitments and to plot and plan such an attack seems ludicrous! to risk all that sacrifice on something nefarious does'nt make much sense, but then again, if T's self-esteem was so low that she truly believed these other skaters were better than her, then its plausible she would go along with the scam or at least gloss over and be amused with it, doesn't make sense she would risk it all, though. Are you a fan of T?
@flyingcat2054 - Yes I definitely have a lot of respect for her for overcoming her hard beginnings & persevering till she reached her goal ~~> Olympics. She totally gave it her all. It's a shame how it turned out. 11:05 pm May 27 2011
So sad that bad influences in her life caused her to lose so much that could have been in her future. She was an incredible skater -- used to alway looks forward to seeing her skate. Still makes me feel bad to this day.
Lol, her music is so perfect for 1991. Great performance though. It's a shame that she went on to such infamy. She could have been even greater if she had just gotten control of her demons. Her whole story is that of a waste of talent.
I like how its all quiet and then theres the screams of joy!! who are the announcer people? i like when the one said good girl haha!! amazing performance :)
@figureskatingchick13 Don’t know for sure all of them. I’m certain the “good girl” is Al (Do you believe in miracles?) Michaels, with Dick Button and I believe the female is either Peggy Fleming or Jo Jo Starbuck doing the “color” work. You might chase the comments way back to the first ones and find out for sure.
Tonya was great! I think she had the stuff to be the greatest skater since Dorothy Hamill. A shame that it was thrown away. However, I never liked Nancy Kerrigan - I thought she was nasty and arrogant and self-centered - definitely a spoiled rich brat. Tonya was the better skater.
@earlymusicus To afford the expensive private skating lessons, Kerrigan's father, a welder at a local food plant, took on an extra job as a maintenance man in the evening. Eventually he would take out substantial loans to keep his daughter's skating career afloat
Read more: Nancy Kerrigan Biography - Early Years On Ice
Nancy DID NOT come from money....I read somewhere that she, too, felt the pain of snobbery from skaters who DID come from privileged backgrounds...
To this day I don't get why the so-called Best female skaters never won the Gold medal. It was always an upset. Tonya Harding, Nancy Kerrigan, Michelle Kwan- all considered the best, but NEVER won. What the fuck? Why did this happen? You would think at least one of the favorites in the women's skating in Olympics would be a Gold medalist, but its never happened.
@fusock Don't forget Janet Lynn.Maybe its just as well as they left a impression on us.The same thing can't be said about Tara Lipinksi and Sarah Hughes.
:) I remember watching this performance over and over as a little girl. My sisters and I would watch her skate everyday after school. Nobody skates like her! I miss seeing her skate...so glad she's here.
@stewartcody14 That awful mother.Maybe if the " mother " had treated Tonya better, she would have made better choices in her life than hang out with losers.
the only reason i looked this up is cause i was watching worlds dumbest criminals and it showed a pic of her skateing and i didnt believe it so i had to look it up
The story of Tonya Harding is really a sad one. I can't help wonder how things might have turned out for her if she had only practiced and not been involved in the whole "Tonya VS Nancy" drama? This really is like a fairytale gone wrong. Tonya Harding had all of the elements of a great skater because she was...just went down the wrong path. This is a great example of how our choices truly affect our lives.
@HattieLovesCattie Thanks Hattie. I have a soft spot for Tonya because I honestly believe she just made some really bad choices...we all do sometimes, but hers unfortunately left a permanent mark on her life as well as Nancy's.
holy crap - look at her then, then look at her now. That's why a guy should always check out a girls mother before getting too serious. You wanna know what you'll be looking at in 10 years
damn!! if only we had skaters like her today. especially the guys. this sport turned so gay cuz of no drama. we need skaters who needs to show confidence in this sport instead of showing a bunch of pussys. no wonder this sport has no publicity, there's no drama and awesomeness and ego's being brought. and i'm a male figure skater. we need more drama
i think the only time where tonya harding beat kristi to my knowledge, who knows what could happen if tonya won worlds, her career wouldve been different.
saying she came from the other side of the tracks is just a nice way of saying she was just trash....it was her upbringing that caused her own downfall....
One of my favorites of Tonya. She was hungry and she went after it . What happened ? She was the best and I'd love to get some skating tips from her . Tonya had stronger jumps than the men at this point. We miss ya Tonya !!
Tonya lacked confidence in herself and THAT was her problem. When she did well she was SOOOOO HAPPPPPYYYYY and you could see it, but when she feared not doing well, she freaked out and went after the competition. She COULD have gotten the gold on her own if she had just believed in herself, but she didn't.
So sad really. She was sloop talented and really probably would have ended up being the greatest ever or second behind yamaguchi. But she was always troubled, and could never fulfill her potential. Reminds me of Jennifer capriati as I am a fan of hers too :(
She never had a chance after she hooked up Gilouly, she could have been so much more. She still rocked it. Girl from the wrong side of the tracks made good for awhile ... and that's what I'll always remember about her.
I remember living in Portland at the time, when this was shown, pregnant with my now 19 year old daughter. Tonya was an AWESOME skater, with some great moves. She would have succeeded I believe. However, she was a smoker and drank ocasionally. Two big no no's for a profesional athlete. Had she given up these vices, and really worked, she could have beat Kerrigan hands down. She just had too many odds stacked against her.
But Tonya Harding was ahead of Ito in form on the ice, no matter if Ito was also with natural presentation on the ice. That's another thing, Harding was very musical and this was overlooked by many.
It's both incredible and also sad that even to this day, there are no other women who possess the kind of jumps, triple axel, power and flow on the ice like Tonya Harding. She had it all and was the ideal modern figure skater. She wasn't a trained dancer or ballerina type, yet she also had the natural presentation, form and appeal on the ice as well. Results aside, it's not far-fetched to think that Harding could very well be the best female figure skater ever. Ito not far behind.
I haven’t watched all of Tonya’s programs by a long stretch. I’ve seen her on UTube at 15 and I can’t help but think she was better then...... except that she hadn’t done a triple axle. She does one here, but an absolutely fabulous performance would have been a mix from her 1996 skate America and her landing of the triple axle in the 1991 Skate America. REGARDLESS INCREDIBLE TOP NOTCH FIGURE SKATER! Put all her talents together and maybe she was the BEST EVER!
Such grace and beauty, it's tragic that she threw it all away with Kerrigan. She could have won if she truly tired. Now, she's just a washed up Figure Skater and boxer. Now she makes money off a D list celeb comedy show and racing cars occasionaly. Such a waste of talent
What a joke LorenzoNW! Remember that Kim and Asada are skating in a completely different era - I'm not just talking time period, but requirements. In the past, you had less guidelines so your artistry and style and what you did out there was up to you. However, this was either a blessing or burden. More freedom on the ice, but more pressure to have a complete package. Harding did well. It's also hilarious that you mentioned Yu Na. No matter the choreography given to her, she is ice cold on ice.
@delayedricochet You are so right to say that Kim and Asada are skating in different times, and under a radically different judging system, than Tonya Harding. Which, by the way, was @ 20 years ago now. Just looking at Tonya's skating, she was powerful, fast, and could out-jump a lot of the men skating (and winning) then. I give Tonya her due, because she earned it. Nothing else in her life worked out well, did it? Very sad. Appreciate your thoughts.
@tnlmtr I agree with the commentator's observations, "Great power, great speed, and great athletic ability." She's an incredibly talented athlete. But what inspires me are the qualities bought to figure skating from the world of dance. I'm moved more by the kind of artistic expression I see with Yu-Na Kim or Torvill and Dean. Just my preference. Tonya is technically perfect but her choreography looks more like a brilliantly executed routine than an artistic, interpretation of the music.
@LorenzoNW it was a different era, a different system and different requirements back then. She definitely had natural artistry and presence on the ice, great musicality as well, and you could see this especially in her exhibition programs. That is why many believe Harding would have gone on to a successful pro career had things turned out differently. Btw, Yu Na Kim is hardly up there with the greats like Torvill/Dean. Kim is so ice-cold on the ice, no matter what her choreographer prepares.
Tonya was a great skater.

Nancy DID NOT come from money....I read somewhere that she, too, felt the pain of snobbery from skaters who DID come from privileged backgrounds...

A great performance, had to look at it again

To this day I don't get why the so-called Best female skaters never won the Gold medal. It was always an upset. Tonya Harding, Nancy Kerrigan, Michelle Kwan- all considered the best, but NEVER won. What the fuck? Why did this happen? You would think at least one of the favorites in the women's skating in Olympics would be a Gold medalist, but its never happened.

@fusock Don't forget Janet Lynn.Maybe its just as well as they left a impression on us.The same thing can't be said about Tara Lipinksi and Sarah Hughes.

@stewartcody14 That awful mother.Maybe if the " mother " had treated Tonya better, she would have made better choices in her life than hang out with losers.

@SymphonySiren Wonderful post Siren. The same thing can be said for the late Chris Bowman.I got to meet him in LA years ago,he was so nice.

@HattieLovesCattie Thanks Hattie. I have a soft spot for Tonya because I honestly believe she just made some really bad choices...we all do sometimes, but hers unfortunately left a permanent mark on her life as well as Nancy's.
SymphonySiren 1 year ago
@SymphonySiren And she has to live with those choices.I am glad she had found a nice husband and her baby is due any day now.

damn!! if only we had skaters like her today. especially the guys. this sport turned so gay cuz of no drama. we need skaters who needs to show confidence in this sport instead of showing a bunch of pussys. no wonder this sport has no publicity, there's no drama and awesomeness and ego's being brought. and i'm a male figure skater. we need more drama

saying she came from the other side of the tracks is just a nice way of saying she was just trash....it was her upbringing that caused her own downfall....
blkakim3 1 year ago
One of my favorites of Tonya. She was hungry and she went after it . What happened ? She was the best and I'd love to get some skating tips from her . Tonya had stronger jumps than the men at this point. We miss ya Tonya !!
JUNGLEJIMY123 1 year ago
Tonya lacked confidence in herself and THAT was her problem. When she did well she was SOOOOO HAPPPPPYYYYY and you could see it, but when she feared not doing well, she freaked out and went after the competition. She COULD have gotten the gold on her own if she had just believed in herself, but she didn't.
HighHeelShoes 1 year ago
So sad really. She was sloop talented and really probably would have ended up being the greatest ever or second behind yamaguchi. But she was always troubled, and could never fulfill her potential. Reminds me of Jennifer capriati as I am a fan of hers too :(
JakobTennisMB 1 year ago
She never had a chance after she hooked up Gilouly, she could have been so much more. She still rocked it. Girl from the wrong side of the tracks made good for awhile ... and that's what I'll always remember about her.
surge2k7 1 year ago
I remember living in Portland at the time, when this was shown, pregnant with my now 19 year old daughter. Tonya was an AWESOME skater, with some great moves. She would have succeeded I believe. However, she was a smoker and drank ocasionally. Two big no no's for a profesional athlete. Had she given up these vices, and really worked, she could have beat Kerrigan hands down. She just had too many odds stacked against her.

But Tonya Harding was ahead of Ito in form on the ice, no matter if Ito was also with natural presentation on the ice. That's another thing, Harding was very musical and this was overlooked by many.
lookscudkill 1 year ago
It's both incredible and also sad that even to this day, there are no other women who possess the kind of jumps, triple axel, power and flow on the ice like Tonya Harding. She had it all and was the ideal modern figure skater. She wasn't a trained dancer or ballerina type, yet she also had the natural presentation, form and appeal on the ice as well. Results aside, it's not far-fetched to think that Harding could very well be the best female figure skater ever. Ito not far behind.
lookscudkill 1 year ago

No matter the choreography given to her, she is ice cold on ice.
delayedricochet 1 year ago
@delayedricochet You are so right to say that Kim and Asada are skating in different times, and under a radically different judging system, than Tonya Harding. Which, by the way, was @ 20 years ago now. Just looking at Tonya's skating, she was powerful, fast, and could out-jump a lot of the men skating (and winning) then. I give Tonya her due, because she earned it. Nothing else in her life worked out well, did it? Very sad. Appreciate your thoughts.

HattieLovesCattie 1 year ago
Technically amazing but honestly, her choreography bores me. None of the lyricism, musicality, emotional expression, and nuance of a Yu-Na or Mao.
LorenzoNW 1 year ago
@LorenzoNW Then I must assume you would also be bored by a nuclear explosion!
tnlmtr 1 year ago
@tnlmtr I agree with the commentator's observations, "Great power, great speed, and great athletic ability." She's an incredibly talented athlete. But what inspires me are the qualities bought to figure skating from the world of dance. I'm moved more by the kind of artistic expression I see with Yu-Na Kim or Torvill and Dean. Just my preference. Tonya is technically perfect but her choreography looks more like a brilliantly executed routine than an artistic, interpretation of the music.
LorenzoNW 1 year ago
@LorenzoNW it was a different era, a different system and different requirements back then. She definitely had natural artistry and presence on the ice, great musicality as well, and you could see this especially in her exhibition programs. That is why many believe Harding would have gone on to a successful pro career had things turned out differently. Btw, Yu Na Kim is hardly up there with the greats like Torvill/Dean. Kim is so ice-cold on the ice, no matter what her choreographer prepares.
