@Musketnpistol Yes for sure. But the lack of armor manage a lot of Pilot Kills or hits that injured the pilots.

And also I think through the shock of being hit and fear they often could not react fast enough to jump out. The American, German and Russian Pilots had better chances to escape because of the better armor around the pilot.

But I also know that a lot of jap pilots dont use paras to keep the plane lighter......thats it a stupid idea :D

The Japanese should have realized after the battle of Leyte Gulf they were beaten, but they made us grind it out. After the shellacking we gave them in the island hopping campaign and the strategic bombing it still took two atomic bombs and being attacked by the russians before they finally threw in the towel. But for stubborn pride, they could have saved themselves a lot of suffering.

Fishing boats, as now, were used as radio relays by the military & often had powerful two way radios. BTW, WW II was total war as exemplified by the treatment of non hostile civillians in China & the Phillipines by the Japanese. Let's not forget that the Germans started bombing urban residential areas as opposed to just strategic bombing of military production facilities early in the war. We also all know what they did to civilians they considered "subhuman" or have you forgotten?

At least, Japanese soldiers who had committed war crimes were executed by allied nations after WW2. It is said that about 1,000 Japanese were executed as war criminal after WW2. According to Lonely Eagle" by Charles Lindbergh, US soldiers often killed Japanese prisoners of war for amusement. I am sure that the US soldiers who had killed Japanese prisoners of war didn't face a court-martial.

Study a bit more to learn why Marines & Soldiers in the Pacific campaign executed POW's on some occasions. That has everything to do with the mutilations & murders of American POW's starting at Guadalcanal. While I don't condone our troops behaviour I certainly understand it & would have turned a blind eye if I had been there. Tit for tat my friend.

Very nice video but are all those planes really Mustangs? Looks like some planes are shooting guns more than MG:s. I thought Mustangs had just 12,7 mm/0,5 inch machine guns, not 20mm? guns. I'm sorry my explanation is not very good but I'm a bit drunk now :).

I knew of an instructor that flew P-40's and P-51's during WWII. He compared the P-40 to a Chevrolet and the P-51 to a Cadillac. A book that I recommend is one written by Len Morgan called "200 Hours To Remember" Sadly I just discovered that Len Morgan passed away on March 11,2005. Godspeed Len Morgan

Iwo based P-51s at times did carry 6 x 5" rockets, in addition to drop tanks, on missions over mainland Japan.

OK but I doubt it all happened the way the narrator tells it. It implies the P51 was a multi-purpose machine with almost unlimited ammo. The same planes escorting the Bulls, hacking down targets of opportunity like the transport shown and navy aircraft and with rockets under their wings... ? Not really. Then they have enough ammo to go strafing for ages all the way home. Not strictly authentic even for this wonder machine!

Yes, this guncamera footage is completely authentic.

The only part that was "staged" by the Army Air Force production unit are the brief scenes that show the pilot's face; which were filmed on the ground with a P-51 and a rear projection screen showing "clouds".
