Like the man told Charles, the first thing they deal with when a new person goes through losing their sight, is self pity. And not only did Mary have self pity, but she also was in denial. I get what you're saying about the mirror, but two things, it came with the set lol, and two they may had kept it for a person who first comes to the school to realize they are blind, and they have to face it. And once they do, they learn they can live their lives as they did before, but with more senses.
@jecka1982 I think he could hear that she wasn't using utensils. And I think he also knows by her attitude so far that she would do something like that. Intuition, I guess.
As in Part 1, I think there are scenes missing here. I recall Adam and Mary having a conversation after he escorted her to her room. Also at the end of Part 1, didn't Laura say to Mary, "I'll be waving as you drive away"? That was missing too.
@Emotional2000 Do you both really blame her for that? She's just as nice as she used to be in future episodes... it's hard to adapt to things like going blind...
@Emotional2000 Yeah same thing I thought when I first heard his name, Linwood Boomer huh I would go by Boomer like a nickname. Who names their kid Linwood anyway ?
@EmilyBearfan He couldn't see, but did you hear her silverwear cling? Not really, so Adam knew, or because he wasnt always blind...like a deaf teacher not always deaf, well she would know what her students said still by the way they moved, like a blind person would use there hearing
This is one of my favorite LHOP episodes. @blueangel123ful - I think Adam is really cute and perfect for Mary. The Adam & Mary love story was an excellent storyline.
Adam isnt very cute. Because when he got His sight back he ignored Mary also. and mary saw that too. i would of dumped adam after he ignored me like that being married to me and all. and while he was out playing with eye sight freinds.and leaving mary out and ignoring her. not her fault she went blind. adam is a stupid over growing geek.
@Samoaqueen No those aren't jokes. That's life. Blind people talk the same as anyone else. You don't have to avoid words like "looking" or "see." Chances are they use the same words themselves. If you did run into someone who had a fit over it; they probably are still in resentment mode.
there's a deleted scene where he's talking to the guy who tells charles that they dont allow visits or letter and that they will send a letter on how mary is doing and that they know what their doing lol!
@1mnmfan Yeah I remember he said complete separation at first. I also thought I remembered him saying that a longer visit would be filled with her pleading not to leave her. I didn't think it was quite as brief as shown here.
@violet46 No it's part of the treatment she needs. They know that after Mary leaves the school, she'll come across a mirror on someones dressing table or in a bathroom. She'll feel the cold glass, know what it is, and it will remind her what she's lost. She'll be around sighted people who have these things. She needs to be used to it.It's better to get rid of all the self pity now alone in private. It could be embarrassing to start crying at someones house because you felt a mirror in the room.
I wish Caroline had gone with Mary to the school instead of Charles. They always seemed closer with one another in my mind. More of an emotional departure maybe.
hey im trying 2 make a video of mary and adam and i was wondering if u could send me part 2 of I'll be waving as you drive away If you could i would really like it and would give u credit thnxs allycat181
@godsfiddler Are you sure. I tried to look for it and there was only Times are Changing when Charles comes back into Walnut Grove to pack up and go work at a Men's Clothing Store...Season 9
I find this episode difficult to believe. They put a male teacher in a room alone with a blind girl? Surely not, even in the 19th century? Then again, you don't need to believe it because it's not true; they slept four to a room and two to a bed at that school. But I sort of appreciate how she feels as a new starter at a boarding school and going from a warm family environment to a cold institutional one since I had that experience at age 12 (not a blind school).
I know that the real Mary Ingalls went to blind school and graduated, but the Ingalls family on the show seem to be struggling to make ends meet. I wonder how they paid for Mary's tuition, unless the townspeople helped or doc Baker found her a scholarship.
@HamstersHorses I think it was put there to help the students to come out of denial and to see they are able to lead normal lives. ( yes, i put the word SEE in there on purpose)
i love this epi the start of a strong love.. i feel bad for mary but as it is it is good to show children that no matter what u can over come anything...
Adam is one of the most interesting & wonderful kinds of men. He's gentle & caring, but firm in his belief that you MUST try - & if you do that you CAN succeed. He's also very funny if you think about it. He's so nice. And if Mary thinks about it for a while - she'll realise, Adam is A TEACHER! Her dream is NOT completely lost....she just has to rethink her strategy. I LOVE this episode...it's beautiful & sad &.....*sigh*
i know they were doing whats best for mary but they should've given her more time to get used to her blindness, instead of forcing her to stay there in a dark world not knowing anyone.
At 6:44, Adam says: "Sorry I'm late, a little problem in the kitchen. The students do the cooking here and one of the new ones mistook the cayenne pepper bottle for the cinnamon". That's not the only time that happens in the series, but next time it's not an accident. :D
