When newspaper headlines and the daily 6-midnight grind starts to get me down, I stumble over Tom Waits, his name takes on new meaning knowing how he truly waits, patiently, for me to re-stumble over him and he sings his whisky soaked philosophy and eat it up with a dirty spoon.
There are two kinds of people in this world, those with loaded guns, and those who dig. No, wait, I meant those who get Tom Waits, and those who don't get Tom Waits.
My grrrl and I were fortunate enough to have caught his performance in Eugenius in like ninety-nine. He is one of a certain breed for certain, genius.
I was Blessed with seeing Tom at the Beacon Theather in NYC with Leon Redbone.Tom was has Always captured my imagination since the first time I heard him and I Love his still!
Imagine a guy dressed in a multicoloured clown outfit shouting out hillarious yet poigniant jokes as he rides past on a motorcycle, on a quest to do nothing in particular, leaving nothing but confused, awestruck joy in his wake.
That's what tom Wait's music would be like if it was a person.
Pure bliss! I so love him, I will never get sick of him. I have loved him since the "70s and this song after hearing it a ton of times still gives me chills and tears.
A song dwelling on nostalgic memories of a rebellious youth, lost love and broken promises. He loves her but hurts her, but he cannot touch her dreams. They remain pure and beautiful.
tom waitz is somthing i never get tired listening too and it kind off special music but it still great . and i like tom better and better for each time i listen too him .
First time I heard this, I felt like crying. It has been like that with Mr. Waits ever since. And I do not cry ... and don't know why. His whole Gestalt, lyrics, music an' all hit right into solar plexus ...
Whats funny is the average person that has never heard of Tom Waits might listen to this and think this is the worst thing they have ever heard, while us Waits fanatics see all the beauty contained within; the beauty of his gruff voice, the pain he can unfuse lyrics with, the use of American song form and traditional instruments combined with strange ones, like drum brakes from your car. Time to dream an innocent little dream.
That's all part of him. If tom was some kind of glitzy, popular hit-singer, the appeal would be gone. There's something about him all of us can relate to and connect to on some level, and it's a shame that some people are too put off by the initial appearances to continue.
@Misishaxi- I have a friend that hates TW's so me and another friend keep searching for something by Waits he can latch onto so he can see what we see. My latest effort is a staggeringly sad and touching song performed live on David Letterman Dec 21st, 1983 called ON THE NICKEL about downtown L.A.'s 5th Street the hobo's affectionately refer to as "the nickel." He dedicates the song to "all the little boys who've run away from home." The song touches me deeply each time I venture in its wake.
@pretorious700 All of those pop culture asses are the people that use the word "faggot." So kudos to you. Way to go. No doubt Tom Waits is beyond amazing. But I'm sure he wouldn't approve of the use of that word.
@TheWesleykyle I have tried to use the website ones, but they have stopped loading on my browser, so I will give your idea a try. Thank you very much [=
I love him so much! He's been my favorite since the 70s. Such a genius rare talent!!!! I travel great distances to see him live, and it sure is worth it!!!!
On this thread (and others) I've seen claims that TW is unlike other American artists. As an American, I have this observation.
Americans tend to believe that all problems are solvable, and that life with unaddressed problems is unacceptable. Hence, all problems must either be solved, or have solutions pending.
That's why TW is so different from other American writers, poets, and musicians. His message unapologetically says: "Life is infinitely sad, and full of troubles. HERE THEY ARE."
@Hammerhead3229 True. However, TW is unique because he does not avoid composing songs with the tragic view.
This is important. Because of our belief in solutions to all problems, Americans tend to reject tragedy as an entertainment genre.
Of course it's not quite that simple. American culture is not devoid of tragedies, as with plays like "Death of a Salesman," or movies like "A Simple Plan." However, I feel that such works are far too rare in America, especially in the medium of music.
@Glencanon4au I think Grunge hit very well with what you're talking about it. Too bad it died out too fast. But writers like Mark Lanegan, and other grunge artists knew what all of it was. Other than that, I'd probably have to agree. And the modern day examples have the tragic elements, but are presented with a much to whiny misdemeanor. Which is hardly acceptance...
@Hammerhead3229 Exactly. Whining is an example of the sordid view, not the tragic view.
The sordid view uses hatred, degradation, self-pity, and self-indulgence. By contrast, the tragic view is characterized by awe and dread, mixed with a sense of wonderment. There is no kinship between the sordid view and the tragic view.
Always think: the depths of sordidness, vs. the heights of tragedy.
I never heard a TW song that used the sordid view, not this song, nor even "Bottom of the World."
@Glencanon4au Interesting thoughts. I think you're right ,and things have progressed in this up beat, perky direction even since I was young. If you take a look in the children's section of an average American bookstore, all the stories are happy. Every problem is solved. Every Brothers' Grim character remains alive. All bad guys learn their lessons.
Wow, he looks so young here and yet he sounds so old! You definitely have to have a different taste to enjoy Tom Wiaits. He reminds me of an old blues singer. As gravelly as his voice sounds, it comes from somewhere deep where only demons dare reside.
@SanGuevara he has an astounding amount of music recorded. a friend of mine turned me on to him a few years ago and i still find songs i haven't heard almost everytime i look him up, even just here on youtube. he's been in a lot of movies, too but the only other one i've seen is "Wristcutters: A Love Story" if you like Parnassus, you'll probably dig this one, too. Its different, but it shares that "something more going on" vibe.
one of the few to break the narrow mindid American culture and actually loved by all. He is amazing, and is hard to see him now as old and doing bit parts in film
TW looks quite young. I guess that at some time early in his life, he did something that most of us don't usually do when we're young. He took the slight trouble to notice drunken old people, and to speculate about them without passing judgement.
"There, that guy, the one sitting in the park, drinking out of the brown paper bag. What could that guy's memories be like, such that he feels he must obliterate those memories, and himself, with alcohol? Hmmmm. . . Let's make a song out of that."
Ok so I looked it up and it is him. This is 20 years old. Making me feel old, because I clearly remember buying this album around the time it came out.
He is the best singer-song writer that ever existed.
If I could only listen to four records for the rest of my life it would be "Franks wild years" "Rain dogs" "Blood money" and "Orphans" and I wouldn't mind.
It doesn't matter whether Tom Waits is young or old, he'll never, ever, ever, in a million years be "mature". He is the coolest, smartest, funniest "just plain Tom" in the universe. I have loved him for many years, and will undoubtedly always will!! Ignore him and it will be your loss! My favorite poet, singer, connection...ever!!!
My Dad once made me listen to this over and over as he repeated each line of the lyrics and pondered them. Tom Waits is his favorite. Can you blame him? Pure genius.
@dgfutg Raisin yur son on heavy doses of TomWaits? You shud be raported to The Authorities .. yu no .. them's in charge of Bedder Kwality Edgamakashin, an yu learn'em sumpin gud, eh? My Dad once made me listen to this over and over as he repeated each line of the lyrics and pondered them. Tom Waits is his favorite. Can you blame him? Pure genius.

@rayward54 Hehe, I love the early Beefheart blues stuff. My kid is a bit more open to different stuff now, Coltrane and such...

@BilisNegra I was not joking, but the Tom Waits-era is over now, thankfully. They're great albums, but hearing them 500 times kind of takes its toll

Keep it up, for sure, mang, an yul turn him out to be a Happy Fella, anywhere he goes, anything he does; even if he works hard, studies & eventually finally ultimately becomes his life's ambition & lives his own innocent dream - to become another fine, supremely gifted, sensitive, caring hooker from minneapolis
