  • he show them his beef to when he climbs the cage

  • He is horny

  • Adorable! My "males" certainly must be happy; they sing to their "females" all day long. =8-D

  • cute!

  • Please stop caging birds needlessly.

  • thats mean that bird probably got bad blue balls

  • Those birds want to make out really bad!! Maybe I should start singing to some women LOL!!

  • birds...

  • It looks like a form of torture to me. I can imagine what the male bird is singing to them: "So close, yet so far away!"

  • He's horny, what do you think?

  • Bird mating can be rough. The male digs his claws into the females back, depending on the species of course.

  • the guy bird is spazing out "open the fucking door!!!!!!!!"

  • Singing makes them happy? um... Anyone considered a possibility, that "happiness" comes first? "I am happy therefore I sing," - not the other way around? Silly scientists... =)))

  • @karpovka The singing comes first to attract a mate and then the bird feels a reward for attracting a mate. It is very primitive and not at all like the way we function.

  • thanks for clearing that up for me. i was just about to go start singing for a princess..

  • Lmao

  • @FutureInventions I see... You are one of the ones who believes animals have no feelings... I am just going to point out that I said "considered a possibility," and then suggest a book by J Masson "When Elephants Weep," - might broaden your horizons a little bit. =]

  • @karpovka I never said animals don't have feelings! I love animals. I have 2 dogs and they are very loving. I posted that a long time ago, not even sure why. I'm sure birds do have feelings just more limited than ours. And I'll check out that book.! :D

  • @FutureInventions - well, nevermind my snappiness then. =D But yeah, check out that book anyway. =) It was easy, fun, but at the same time "sciency" enough. =)

  • if i was singing to myself.. and a loner.. i'd be sad too dude lol xD

    animals need company too

  • This video proves nothing because how can we see if that behavior isn't the same when two males interact. They are probably just talking to each other. They probably get lonely in those small cages. And one last thing, how does this research even benefit humans?

  • that is probably true :( so cruel!!!

  • I'm sure they tested 2 males. It would be retarded if they didn't try that. Of course it benefited humans; it satisfied (at least some of) the scientists curiosity. Isn't that what all scientific pursuits are ultimately about?

  • i had 2 as pets...they r like roosters when the sun comes up they are natures alarm clock but they r beutifle

  • At 0:44 you can see the gray female shaking her tail feathers. It looks like slow motion in this video because the camera can't record that fast, but they shake it really fast, it usually looks like a blur. :-) But anyway, that is a mating invitation. Males do it too.

  • The way the white female finch is arching her back shows that she is interested too.

    Horny girls!

  • its a zebra finch

  • That's cute

  • Isn't their reward centers lighting up because it sees the female? Like any other animal? Singing has nothing to do with it.

  • Nothing too much different from humans heh ;]

  • I may be missing something here, but I would assume it is the presence of females that is "rewarding" to the male, not his singing to them. It seems to me his singing is a consequence of that feeling, and not the cause of it.

  • Notice that he didn't jump at them until the females started wagging their tails. The females wanted it just as much!

  • 0:12 WTF ?! LOLF o.o

  • LMAO!

  • "you can touch my bird if you know what i mean"

  • LOL it does NOT take a scientist to tell that he's a horny little bugger! He was like, "Let me at em' dammit!"

  • Is that why some human males like exposing themselves in public? They somehow find it rewarding?

  • "Oh yeah baby! Pound my cloaca like I'm a dirty mcnugget!"

  • "come on baby, come on i love you. lets go!!"

  • he just wanted to get thoose asses , not much science in that

  • LOL..

  • ROFL

  • lol

  • Did you see those 2 females wagging there tails! There were ready for mating!

  • hahaAHAHa that is soooo true it can be applied to people as well!!

  • yep

  • it's called wooing

  • rotatingwah, I love that you mistook it to say male birdbrains. LOL Funny thing is that some males really are birdbrains who sing to attract a female! haha

  • chakkeramon, your comment REALLY cracked me up! ROFL

  • great japanese researchers reinventing the wheel...what a waste

  • ha. money well spent. never would have figured.

  • what if he was crying for help?

  • wonder if they brought 2 male birds in front of him.. would seeing him excited mean the bird is gay ?

  • Wtf? Are you sure it's not just being able to see them that is causing it? Why would the actual singing have an effect?

  • Haha, he's trying to get into the other cage XD

  • that's just nothing new. I am also quite happy when around some woman is singing

  • lol

  • It's not that way, it has to be that you're happy when you are singing to women. Actually that would be weird unless you had a good voice.

  • Hm. Ok, I agree that in article is schema reverse. But that human voice cannot be count, because singing of birds is "singing" only from human viewpoint. It is normal speech (1), but ok, it can contain "artistic elements". But if you look at it from point 1, you may get, that talking to woman makes man's brain happy... what is also nothing such new. And also one thing: maybe it would not be weird to be happy to sing to woman even if without artistic levels - if woman would like it :)

  • that's a damn good point

  • What he was saying first, "Why the hell am I in this cage. This sucks. I want out.". Then, "Damn, you bitches are looking fine. How about you come a little closer and spread your...uh...wings?"

  • I think he was doing a remix of his previous singing =D

  • maybe its not singing that makes him happy... wad the its obviously his horniness...lol.

  • it's a male, simple explanation

    ..horny

    =]

  • That male bird dude is one horny mother fucker!

  • so birds lie too

  • there are proteins called 'immediate early genes' that get activated in neurons when they have been recently active. they found them by subjecting neurons to conditions that would basically cause a seizure, and then searching for new proteins that appeared.

the protein's lifetime i'm guessing is on the level of tens of minutes to hours, so they kill the animal, fix them with paraformaldehyde, and image the proteins using antibodies and fluorescent probes

  • in directed song the birds singing also becomes much more steroetyped -- the male wants to prove that he has a good brain. when the male bird is away from females, his singing becomes more variable so that he can practice

what they didn't show in the video is that they killed the little guy after the video was taken. and also they didn't explain the crude sort of ways scientists these days study "activated brain areas"

  • they would uses a device similar to a cat scan... you cant study activated areas of a dead brain...

  • wow! the male is interested in the females! didnt see that one coming

  • Interesting, now how will this help global warming? XD

  • if we understand animals it helps us get closer to understanding where we come from and who we are. not every scientist is a global warming expert.

  • mom your my smalls

  • Duh!

  • horny little bugger

  • Yeah, maybe they should :)

  • why did they have to spend millions of our tax dollars to figure out common sense? this pisses me off GRANDLY!

  • Your tax yen? Are you Japanese?

  • we're all the same... people do this useless stuff everywhere, don't they? :(

  • chirp chirp chirp (come here baby lets slap some feathers together)

  • he started spitting game instantly!

  • finches are so cute.

  • cool :O

  • This probably explains why budgies and other birds go insane with thier singing sometimes - you can actually see thier pupils dilate like they are full of adrenaline or something..

  • i tell what the male bride is saying

oh hay baby you got some nice looking feathers i like your hair why dont you come over hear so i can clean them for you

  • beat box!

  • Why do we need scientists to tell us guys like flirting with hot chicks?

ok thats not a good pun.

  • lol

  • Those female birds look hot

  • lol :D:DDDD

  • Yes, I was thinking that..

  • haha lol

  • Neah, he's saying: "Can I shag you? How about you? You? You?

  • lmao...

  • that scientist sounds like he's 'projecting' himself to the male bird ......lol

  • that's what I was thinking

  • ..ahaahhhaaa......

  • He's all, "Hell yea hell yeah, come here boo!"

  • CUTE

  • that bird was trying to fuck the bars he was so horny, those scientists are cruel cruel bastards :(

  • oh. that means we have to get married and having sex!

  • haha poor guy. he's probably thinking "stupid bars!"

  • Oh come on open one of the cages and let the birds get it on.

  • "Ittts a smaall world aaafter all..." 2 Females are introduced "I like big b.... lol

  • i misread the title and thought it said: Singing to females makes male birdbrains happy..........doh!

  • Singing to females makes male birds' brains happy?!!.... maybe just the single ones. hehehe.

  • :-D

  • No shit what did they think the bird would do? get depressed when 2 sexy birdies were in his presence?

  • lol

  • This doesn't prove anything. The researcher has to also test the scenario where he puts 2 male birds beside the male bird. See if he also sings loudly, or not. If he does not, then there's something there about singing to females. If he does, then (1) he just wants company or (2) he is homosexual or (3) both.

  • Male: *Whistles* Hey sexy ladies, wanna piece of this action?

    Female1: Go to hell pervert.

    Male: *whistles* Nice tail.

    Female2: Just ignore him.

Male: Come on babes, let's do this. *jumps on cage*

    Female1: Freak.

  • XD he just wanna fuck them..LOL

  • lol

i also flirt to feel happy :D

  • They should call it "the Elvis effect"

  • He just wants to get down and birdy.

  • Lmao!

  • lol, hes like: "Let me in!"

  • interesting...

  • If I were placed alone in a cage by an enormous alien creature, I too would tend to speak less.

But if the gargantuan alien put two females in a cage next to mine, I too would tend to speak more.

Score 1 for the BLEEDING OBVIOUS!

  • lol

  • NEWS JUST IN... Study shows males like to court females.

Also in the news study shows body does not grow when you die, sudden impacts can harm the body, and it gets warmer when the sun shines...

I would just like to know whom paid for this brillant study?

  • xD great sarcasm

  • my thoughts exactly

  • When the bird's song changes when females around, who is to say the male is "happy"? How do they know the male bird is happy? He could be in such desire of wanting the females, --does that make him "happy" ? Sounds more excited and hyperactive. Stimulated. I think he'd really be happy if you put him inside with the females. THEN you will see HAPPY!!!

  • i wish it's that easy for humans too

  • Bird translator activated:

"Hey, laaaadies! Hey, laaaadies! Hey, laaaadies!"

  • it would be like mastrubating

  • It's all about producing in this life, ain't it? Producing and consuming makes us happy like hell... Even our struggle to produce (give birth to offspring) makes us exited... Everything's so lame in this world...

  • the word is the bird word's da bird bird word bird

  • family guy.. ahah

  • poor birds :( get em out of the cage, theyre supposed to be free

  • you are right

  • very nice report...now lets see hippies puke on the keyboard!

  • the word is the bird word's da bird bird word bird

  • I don't know that we can use the word "happy", maybe rewarding is correct

  • NOW YOU KNOW!

  • Thoes were some sexy females.

  • Damn, those females are HOT!

  • Singing to a man makes me happy. So, what's next? Alerting the media?

  • what the fuc,..............dude no shite

  • Most steps necessary in producing off-spring are quite enjoyable, actually!

  • I can attest to that.

  • makes the bird's brain happy but not the bird itself?

  • yea lol

  • the brain IS the bird

  • Where is evidence that he is actually happier?

He is more active, that is observable.

  • Hes horny.

  • Way to be fifth-graders MrPogi87 and domulys; and Elitefrr, it would seem that your immaturity knows know bounds.

  • Uh... I'm pretty sure its not the singing that makes the male bird happy. I'm willing to bet its the sight of two naked chicks.

  • he wants to bust a nut on them birds

  • I wonder what those lady finches think of my old phone modem!! or maybe court the lady finch with a fax machine?!!? LOL!

  • this is the music

  • cute!!

  • so... ?

  • horny bird!

  • Very interesting!!
