The reason I became a bassist is because well 1: its easy 2: its fun but most of all everyone dreams of being guitarists, or drummers, or singers. But you don't hear much people wanting to be bass players. People don't appreciate bass players or don't give them the credit they deserve. It brings life to a song..
@bassjocky The tone is great. It's not all about the flat, muffled, 'bass' sound. You can't get much intonation with that tone. Vic's tone is great. Intonation to the fullest.
can anyone reccommend a list of 10 top bass players so i can reccomend them to my bass player who thinks bass is just bashin the damn thing for rock music
@indieHindleyMusic Victor, Anthony, obviously. Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastorius. Marcus Miller, Larry Grant, Anthony Jackson, even Paul McCartney. Also tell him to listen to Greenday's Dookie, in particular 'Longview'. If he thinks jazz and funk bass is all that bass is interesting in, he needs to hear that.
@indieHindleyMusic what kind of bassist is that, those are the kind of bassists that make us bassists look bad making people think bass is a boring instrument.
@nimvalz then you shouldnt suck so badly. if you're playing something "boring" then you shouldnt be playing it. simple =/= boring. boring = boring. technical =/= great. greatness = great. this guy makes and holds a groove all the time no matter what hes playing. if you can't do that then you're doing it wrong.
@indieHindleyMusic Then why is that bass player even playing bass? Ask him to quit, lol. And whilst you're at it, tell him to listen to Vic, Marcus and Jaco.
@indieHindleyMusic Mike Watt, Jaco Pastorius, Geezer Butler, John Paul Jones, Scott Reeder, Larry Graham, Tim Commerford, Eric Avery, Flea, and James Jamerson. Those guys are all great.
@Buckethood It's a series of exercises, carried over from the previous video. In this case, on phrasing. Put an artificial restriction on yourself to focus on a specific aspect of playing. He starts the exercise only playing one note, articulating and phrasing it in as many ways as possible. And then adds two notes, then all the notes - all the while trying to make something musical and interesting while overloading the variety of phrasings.
@Scheater5 Okay,I get it,it starts from 1:30 on the previous video. I didn't notice that he was playing only three notes at the beginning of this part.

LOL. All the 'drummer' had to do was use the hi-hats. This is how music should be. Just basses.

This looks like an interesting DVD. I think I'll pick it up.
To add to the list top ten bassists, I'd like to add Gary Willis.
His one of the unsung bass monsters. Incredible grooving and soloing.
He also has an interesting take on technique, improvising etc.

@nimvalz well the guy next to vic is playing a quite passive line, and it sounds just as interesting as vic's soloing.
