This scene is about putting things in perspective.
Love baseball, football, basketball or whatever sports...but just remember, the Yankees aren't gonna pay your rent or clothe and feed your children. Every time I see a grown man or woman cry because their team lost a game, I think about this scene.
@txmoney Exactly, lebron james gets $6,000,000 per year to run around and shoot baskets WIN or LOSE he still gets paid so there is no sense in getting all upset when the heat lose a game or whatever
100.000 dollars a year? Nowadays athletes make x10 times more and i'm talking about a rookie not a middle class player not to mention a star player :D
I love this clip, and I love rooting for my Irish, Broncs, Pens, and Aves. But, when it all comes down to it, fuck em. Because no matter what they say, they don't give a single shit about us. And while they wouldn't be anywhere without people watching and supporting they're lifestyle. We're second class to them. I support the game and the TEAMS I was raised on, not the players. I can admit to liking certain player's attitudes. That's it. You won't see me cry over a loss.
All of yous are wrong. He's just using sports as an example. The bigger picture is "Nobody cares". If people [ANYBODY], DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU, WHY SHOULD YOU CARE ABOUT THEM??? He could've been talking about an actor as well. Come on people, open up your mind a little bit. How many refernces to Mickey Mantle throughout the movie, and how many references to 'nobody cares'. I can see that this part of the movie went over EVERYBODY'S heads. smh
Two things I didnt like about this movie One was about Mantle, Chaz should see a priest for forgiveness. The man played hurt all the time and he cared about the fans. The other is couldnt find a better looking actor to be play C grown up. Plus the dirt bag is jail for robbery.
Dumbest theory ever, so cus an athlete wouldnt pay my rent aka wouldnt care about me i shouldnt watch sports?? Lollll wtf dude. They athletes not ur fkin daddy, get a job and take care of urself AND enjoy sports in ur free time.
I think the scene is basically saying don't watch sports if you're poor. Instead, focus your time on improving your situation. One thing I'd add is the funny irony that is noted in sports. The athletes are working out and making millions, while the viewers sit and spend money watching people work out. Not to mention advertisements have conditioned Americans to drink alcohol, eat fried foods and drink soda while watching others work out.
@kji02 ur first point is def valid. but the irony part not, cus thats the only way it would work. how are u gonna pay players salary, build complexes etc etc without revenue from ticket sales and tv?
@kji02 i think what the message is trying to tell you is that you shouldn't be affected or obsessed with athletes nor celebrities. You should worry about yourself and not base your life or be effected by people that are celebrities. In America people worship celebrities like an obsession and it shouldn't be that way. People need to stop being fanatics
@thisnamealsotaken He's just using sports as an example. He could have just as easily been talking about some other role model. Take out the name Mickey Mantle and imsert someone famous that YOU look up to, and you'll see the point he's trying to make. Why spend your time idolizing someone who could care less about YOU is the point he's trying to get across. Think outside the box buddy
@youngnick1978 thnxs buddy but when i see a video about sports im not gonna think of something else. if i do that everytime im gonna be all over the place, ppl gotta say what they mean straightforward. the world would be a better place.
@thisnamealsotaken what hes saying is sports really isnt important in the grand scheme of things and athletes could carless about you. i watch sports but i understand what sonny meant and it makes sense
@thisnamealsotaken Sunny didn’t say don’t watch sport, this is only portrayed in the title of the video and I think this has misled you. Sunny is telling C not to get upset about sport stars. Sunny talks about boxers later in the film and also both go to a boxing match.
@thisnamealsotaken It is NOT a theory but common sense. You miss the point entirely. Sonny points out that Mickey mantle or any sports figure making millions per year could care less about any individual, so why should the individual care about any sports figure. To prove his point, try to get within the inner circle of any sports figure with your hand out to pay for any needed costs you need, and see that they say. They could care less. SO why should you?
@MongooseST3 no i don't, this so called common sense doesn't make sense at all; yes of course a sports figure won't pay ur costs but WTF would u ask a sports figure to do that in the first place?? no one will do that, go ask a politician or a musician or the dalai lama lol. its ur costs so pay them urself, getting angry and saying sports figure don't give a fck about another individual cus they won't pay ur rent loll? what a common sense. ppl should stop whining and get a job or education.
@MongooseST3 and btw this is the most dumb discussion i ever been part of on youtube and that says a lot since we all know how fucked up things can get on here lol.
@thisnamealsotaken So it makes no sense to sit in any sports venue at $50-100 per ticket dump another $50-$60 on beer and food and 3-4 hours of your time, to watch anyone play catch, and get nothing out of it. And to all of you sports fans who will retort that you do get something out of it. You are a sucker.
@thisnamealsotaken If you like them so much get off your ass and play them, don't just sit there and suck some teams dick that doesn't even know you... I think thats what he was trying to say.
@Trollmydick oh dear lord this just keeps going on lol. so if we should all go and play them instead of supporting the teams we like? well would lovvvve to see that lol.
I love A Bronx Tale and I am a Diehard Yankees fan but I just don't like this part. Mickey Mantle made all that money but hey he earned it. He brought joy and championships to a whole generation of Yankees fans. I don't care if Jeter knows who I am; that's not his job to reach out to EVERY fan. Jeter is still my hero and the Yankees are my team for life and I still root hard for the Bombers no matter what.
I think the point of this scene is to share the realization that you shouldn't spend all your free time concerned about athletes since it doesn't help you support your family and yourself.
@kji02 I know exactly what you mean, as I've told so many people I've met to watch this scene. That being said, however, bear this in mind: Mickey Mantle helped a lot of bartenders and strippers to pay their rent. Sonny was MOSTLY right in what he said to Calogero.
Sports stars make millions, while scientists struggle with funding for cures to diseases. We need to get our priorities straight. oh wait.. silly me, its more profitable to exploit an athlete than to solve world wide problems.
@silversobe Nice attempt at sounding "deep." Please explain how athletes are being exploited. Scientists have been struggling with "finding for cures" LONG BEFORE athletes were making millions.
The only sport I watch is women's beach volleyball.
