i've tried some very very basic 2D animation and it takes me hours to do tiny little changes
i've also tried very basic 3D animation and found that while making and rigging the intial model is harder it is quicker to animate since i can just make a library of animations and use/modify them quickly unlike 2D where i have redraw + recolor for every single frame
anyone who watches this has to realize that Don is one of the true animation masters, he can do all this stuff in his sleep, anyone that wants to be an animator has to long work and hard for years to get somewhere, the best animation demo reels are from people that went to 4 year animation colleges, it's like wanting to be a great guitar player you have to do it day and night almost to be good
congratulations you've successfully completed .001 seconds of animation!!!!
I want to get into animation so bad but it just takes so long and I have no patience to speak of. I am really good at drawing but I'm very bad at drawing the same thing over and over consistantly for hours.
@arandomperson3 Maybe CGI is better for you then, I was the same and found CG I didn't necessarily need to be an ACE draftsman but could still try to learn how to Animate. 2D Artists like Mr.Bluth are talented on so many levels..
@wildone106 Well that's what I'm saying. I'm a 2D artist and I can make a wicked picture with a billion different details but I have no patience to speak of. I have such a hard time drawing the same thing over and over and over again.
Thank you for posting your videos. I absolutely love that Princess Daphne drawing. Were you inspired by George Petty? I think I see some of his influence in her form. It is a beautiful drawing. I would love to have that one or one like. You are a master with that pencil. With such finesse, it looks as if you used a brush.
I'll be blunt I think I please myself too much.. okay that sounded obscene, but what I mean is I almost never follow guidelines and make everyone's piece my own when I do anything like fanart. but technical drawing in turn may be impossible for me. If someone says "draw this" I may have trouble. Hell I've never had practice in that aspect, never took any real classes. But that's also where I may shine, as everyone seems to do in the situation where you draw a posing person or make a still life.
This is really a big help to me, I have a BFA but it seems post college I've learned more about art than while I was in college. Thank you for posting all these marvelous videos, it really is a big help to all the little guys out there just trying to make sense of it all.
He's my hero... I use to be very unconfident about my art all the time but Don Bluth's tips makes me feel more secure...
Does anyone here think that they may be a link between depresion and creativity? Sometimes I think I'll never be a good artist as him cauz Im depressed all the time. I dont even enjoy anymore the things I used to draw. How can I please myself?
Parthena: your art will hopefully make you happy. Just work on drawings or ideas or whatever...the kind of things you look forward to checking out the next morning! If your friends or family criticize you, try making drawings for kids sometime. They are a very appreciative audience. I had one little girl literally jump for joy once when I drew her a sheep. The joy was all over her made me feel incredibly happy!
Well certainly there have been many artist with bipolar disorder or other issues but that's true of everyone. If you're bipolar though you go through phases of euphoria/extreme creativity
This is really helpful! I feel like I'm not being too confident in my drawing but this lifted me up!
I find it interesting that you can manage to find more creativity by trying to disconnect from outside. Sometimes I'll hear a song or see something while strolling down the street and it gives me ideas.
I loved your comment about parallel lines! You are a wonderful person to share your insights the way you do. All I can really say is thank you for your gifts to the world.
Your works will be cherished for the rest of time.
you know these days everyone can upload some cheap "tutorial" on youtube, but nothing compares to someone as experienced and passionated over the animation/drawing industry as you. Your books (The art of storyboard and the art of animation drawing) are both amazingly inspiring, please upload more :)
whats quicker to do... 3D animation or 2D
i've tried some very very basic 2D animation and it takes me hours to do tiny little changes

It's amazing how different of a drawing style he has compared to say, Glen Keane. But both are great story tellers and character creators.

That basically summed up what any art is. Create what you want. As simple as that!
Just to annoy you all - try to listen to Stewart Copeland, the guy who didn't try to copy anybody, but played what he wanted.
