Dropped down from the ceiling vent onto that bit in the eating area (Inner Cradle), and found that was a bad idea. That is also the first time I found out that you need Holy water or flash bombs, to kill patients.
It's to bad no one told me I didn't have them, after I dropped down. *screams as he jumps to his death*
I want Thief 1, 2 and 3 remake, with everything in it like before (the same sounds, atmosphere, playability, characters, story,..), but only with the better graphics and compatibility with the never systems (Win 7)!

If the previous games did not leave such an impact,Thief :DS would get the rating it deserves ... This needs to be judged by what it is,not by what it could or should have been.
(Personally) Viewing video games as a branch of art, Deadly shadows is a good example.
The first time I went through this, like mubashi I had a friend, and I knew that there were no enemies in the first half of the cradle, but I didn't know that for the second section. I was running freely thinking there was no danger, and as I went to pick a lock, I saw lights flickering. I finished picking and turned around. Fuck.
Some of the patients' histories are pretty creepy too like the mother (who you can still hear sobbing) and her baby's urn.
The organ music adds to the gothic feel of the Inner Cradle's architecture. It also reminds me of those spooky green flames the Cradle remembers as the fire in the staff tower. Kieron Gillen's analysis of this level is spot on.
One thing I learned from this level is that you suddenly get really good at sneaking around and not getting caught when you're really scared.
I played this game for the first time recently. Yes, Shalebridge Cradle really stood out. I played it at night and it was a very tense experience. The ambient sounds were unsettling; I just didn't know what to expect and I knew it wasn't going to let me go without facing some terror. That whole thing with it being an abandoned orphanage/asylum got to me too.
Oh god, and that banging on the door. I don't think I'm in a minority when I say I quicksaved before I opened it.
@SpookyNooky I think it's some of Lauryl's dialog reversed...all I can really make out is "...you're really here in the past" "the Cradle can see you..." "...they'll find you". So I think it's after you lock yourself in the cage to go to the past, but I'm not sure. Also, it's not straight dialog, it's been altered to make it sound kinda goofy and there's also a male voice making some kind of mumbling or chanting that is really hard to get anything from.
Man First Time I played in Cradle I couldn't sleep all night xD but on the net day I said to me "Hey, it's just a game, ignore these bnshee sounds and complete that level"...And in the evening I did
I've played many games and this by far scared me the most. I was crouched in a corner not knowing which way to go. It was so stressful that I developed a very bad headache in real life. FUCKING SCARY MAN!!!
I actually think the graphics in this game, with normalmaps being new and all, did something special for the mood that differs from the other games. Even now the graphics have something sinister about them. It's not great but is has something that fits. I don't know if I can be more specific, but someone might get what I mean...
The Dark Engine games had a much higher graphical contrast and lacked the distanced fog effects. Compare outdoor areas like Trail of Blood from Thief 2 to the Pagan Sanctuary from Thief 3 to really see what I mean. The lighting was obviously much more advanced so entities like fire in the latest game gave off a more realistic flicker and shadow effect and lacked the harsher illumination that Dark Engine was limited to back then.
i finally finished the shalebridge cradle, i did it at hard but i might as well done it in expert because by pure luck, a manage to steal 95 percent of the loot and the special loot, while usual level take me at most 45 min, this one took me 2 hours stretched over 5 days cause i had to take several pause to calm my stress level, one hell of a mission but once you succeed it, the feeling of acomplishment that come with it is worth it
This game was such a beast!! Still love it! I remember the moment where it was soo frustrating and scary when your lockpicking and the zombie with wires around his head starts to walk!..damn!
guh, scariest part about Shalebridge was the sound, you didn't know if there was something that was going to come and rip your face off or if it was just the soundtrack...
Right after that though would have to be when you're walking down through all of the halls with the cells and you can sort of see something at the end, so you wait. The lights start flickering which, as you've learned, means that the thing at the end is a poltergeist and fuck it all if what you need isn't right next to him...
I like where Thief got its' scaryness from. I get more scared from seeing a mental patient talking to himself with a pair of scissors than a million zombies chasing after you.
Wonderful level. I had never played any horror games before when I got to the cradle. I somehow struggled through the first half, then got to the second part, took one look at a monster, closed the game and went to cry in a corner. Then I tried to skip the part with someone else's save but the game was like "Nooo you must do this part" and screwed up all my saves so I had to start over. Now I have done the level like 4 to 5 times and it still scares the crap out of me :D
I remember this level so well... Quite a unique experience. Horror elements were not new, by any means, but usually in an environment like that, you're mostly afraid of shadows. But in Thief shadow was your friend even in a place like this.
This level can be conquered by- brace yourselves-...
Turning the sound off. Yep, that's what I did, and I noticed that the flickering lights weren't the same without that distinct "Crackling" sounds. But mainly it was the absence of the music and the metallic screeching of the generator. It just lost all of its atmosphere and magic.
@TheSevenCamels My strategy exactly. Best thing was that when I was in the middle of the mission the save games glitched and all my new saves got deleted so I was stuck in the cradle forever.. Haha.
Good thing it got fixed and I played through it. It took 2 months though, I could make myself play the cradle like 2 times per a month until I needed some psychological counselling from sesame street and other children's songs & movies hahaha.
my favorite level evah!! I didn't really find it that scary only at the beginning when I didn't know what to expect and got frightened by all the comments on youtube xD awesome level, awesome game!
Hm, i just bought thief 3 again and just for 3 things:
1. Seeing the keeper guys fighting against city guards wehen theyre after you:)
2. Seeing the Hammerits fighting against undeads in the little fortress you get in midgame ( let them hunt you and then go down the stairs and watch them dying against theyre undead counterparts)
3. To play the cradle again, on expert, with nothing then some water arrows. I think it will be intense when you have no healing and no weapons but your dagger:)
The concept and leveling that makes this game area so scary is three great things
mystery: You dont know what is going to happen and the dark atmosphere boosts the terror
Your char: "your'e not a tank" as you are extremely weak, and having to face scary, sometimes unseen foes, is pretty difficult
amount of new interfaces: yelling, dark mysterious creatures, and ghost children asking for you to go into the soul of the "cradle" is the longest mission in the game, let alone really hard as well.
the atmosphere in this game is unbelievable! its the only game ive played where ive actually been proper terrified! i think i might just have to play it again ;)
this level was my favorite, because i down one of the zombies things but didnt kill it. i then handed my friend the controller and told him to move down the hall, telling him that the thing is dead. the next thing that happens is my friend screaming as the zombie chased his ass up a ladder.
God, this is so creepy! I remember me and my friend walked through whole game and when we got to Cradle we pissed our pants. This shivering zombie-dude with a cage on his head showed up and we just screamed for whole minute :D We didn't complete the game, Cradle was too scary for us.
And this game is EPIC! It's not only Steampunk, but all this sneaking in the shadow and running when you got spotted....
@ZemplinTemplar Attention everyone! plz make this game more and more intresting to play by makeing a mod or finding a mod witch is this one SPAWN NPC charackters anywhere! plz give me your ideas and help ! this would make haunted house alot more action play with everyone fighting! :D
lol, i was just looking for smth to play and thank you for reminding me that I have Thief hidden somewhere... :) think im gonna get prepared.... light's on? Sounds off? Mom around? Craddle, here I come...
@mubashi320 I also played it through with a friend and also screamed for a whole minute at the appearance of the puppets in the cradel haha... SUCH an incredible game! Can't wait for the next in the series!
I remember when I first saw one, I pressed up against the wall in the game, and pushed myself back in my chair IRL, I held my breath as it walked past, nearly shat myself. I hope I don't have to go back there in Thief 4.
I can still remember this part of the game, music scared the shit outta me, espicially when your playing baked out your mind in the early hours of the morning.
This is really the only part of any video game ive found creepy and disturbing since ive been an adult, the music and everything else just sucks you into the atmosphere of the game.
It's amazing what kind of an impact that level left on me. I start to feel really uneasy just listening to this, like there's a weird feeling in my guts
I'd loved this mission. Rather spooky and unsettling. BTW, does anyone have the soundtrack of Garret meeting inspector drept? I liked the music in that scene as well. It was rather short so a longer version of the soundtrack would be much appreciated. Cheers.
Creepy as hell music, one of these days I will summon up the guts to actually play the level. (Whilst playing curosity got the better of me and I looked up 'play through' videos, baaaad idea)
(This is still creepy without the random shouts and yells chucked in)
I think this is one of the creepiest things I've ever seen, props to the developers for making such a scary level though, I think the little 'touches' like paitent notes add to it.
That's a place that you wouldn't like to live in... The atmosphere and the screams in this soundtrack from 0:59 to 1:11 makes you jump. But, I wouldn't know.. Never made it to this level. I'm stucked in Stonemarket Plaza and I need to stop the time by going to the city's clockwatch tower. If someone has some instructions for this please let me know!
@Akanti02 Buy the climbing gloves in the docks, the entrance is on the area on the right side of tayari plaza in stonemarket. Climb up the tower to the pipes and there the entrance is :)
Oh, and yes, I know where the entrance is. Forgot to add it. :) I couldn't climb because I thought that I had the gloves on... :-) Thank you for that additional information too!
In the game it's said that the Cradle was an insane asylum and, then, an orphanage. In the building you find some notes about, like, 'no patients near orphans' rule and things like that. That means that the Cradle was an orphanage AND the asylum AT THE SA...
I think it's hilarious that the guy who designed the Cradle wanted the plans to it buried with him, like he was proud of it, or something. Once you get to know the history of the place, you'll find it's not really something to be proud of.
Creepy doesn't necessarily mean bad (but only if you're playing a video game, or watching a movie or a TV show). I think it's great that they managed to make such a creepy atmosphere.
The cradle was such a long mission. Not only was it freaky but it was soooooooo long. Every time that little girl gave me a new task I felt like turning the game off.
"I can hear you breathing. Nobody in the Cradle does THAT anymore" If it wasn't hell of a line... This particular mission is magnificent. I'm playing the game once more, just for this piece of art. D.R.
anyone who can compose music like this has my admiration ;D wowza to build SUCH atmosphere mainly by music is even above the word 'amazing' . i can imagine those rooms of the cradle just listening to music. First time i played this i was scared as sht, but i have to say ppl are right- its fairly easy mission to go through , except the atmosphere...
fucking creepy as shit, but anyone who fucked with me I 'naded them in their fucking face. I bet the puppets were more scared of me than I was of them (especially if I lodged a fire arrow in their balls)
I won this game ( not acutally me, my brother talking). This mission scared the shit out of me. especially those retarded people with the nailsin their heads...... damn game so scary! But it is THE best game ever
I hate that damn mission! The first time I saw one of the patients I cursed Ion Storm. It took me nearly two weeks to finish that mission! And even now I always play the damn cradle on easy.
thats so true, i was getting phone calls every few hours and almost jumped while hitting flash gernade to run away. omfg i wouldent try this level on Expert mode. would be pissing myself
Lol you know right?: D Dude I went SOOOO SLOW in this mission it was SICK! I only got twice the first fucking time was the fucking scariest and it made the least amount of sense too, you know in the meal hall? how there's that one puppet that just wonders around in there? yeah guess what? when I first entered that area.. I hear a LOUD screech and heard the lights behind me start to flicker sure enough the fucker was RIGHT BEHIND ME! how did that happen!? Is exactly entered my head
this mission was awesome, havent done it on expert yet tho, im working all missions again now on expert, this was the spookiest mission definatly, followed by the abysmal galemission
Самый жуткий уровень за вю игру! Озвучка просто на высоте. Можно даже сказать, что подобного животного и суеверного страха я и в реальности никогда не испытывал! 100 баллов!
I've never played this game, but I've wanted to since I heard about it. This level's music is scary and atmospheric, and I love it. I'm not sure if I should dread this level or not... gawd.
Well, try all three Thieves then... ;-) You can buy them pretty cheaplyand in a anthology boxset these days. All three have some downright scary (orat least creepy) levels, though the core ones are always about simple suspensful thieving among humans.
Careful though, the first two are hard to get working on modern machines. This one will almost certainly work. It's a shame because the original ones had some interesting gameplay elements (such as the fencing) that were removed rather than improved in favor of a more streamlined, automated gameplay (sorta like Splinter Cell, even though the point of Thief was to be first-person).
The third will work without any problems (if you have decent, modern enough hardware). Most of the anthology collections of all three installments include all the extensive patches for Thief I and II, that have been made for them to work specifically on new OS like XP and Vista.
the modern machine things is true, T2 to work on mine was a bitch, the dark engine cant cope with a multi core processor, only way round it is change the affinty of your processor b4 u start playing
Well, when I first time started this level, I was just like - uhm well, there should be zombies probably, let's crush them!:D
But the more I was proceeding through the level then without any enemies, the more I was feeling that something is not good... :D And when I suddenly heard the door banging, I just pressed "exit" button!
And the my nightmare has begun!:D
I don't remember when I was so freaked out by any other game level)))
its a interesting level...there are only like 4 enemies throughout it yet it is on of the longest and scariest levels in the game! i myself have completed and am making a walkthrough of the whole game, i cant wait to make the one for this!
There are tons of enemies haha. I mostly remember it on expert though because that's the last difficulty I played it on. There were probably more like 20-25 puppets on that setting, plus the memories of the staff.
Pretty sure there are 9 puppets on expert setting: all of the patients mentioned in the Cradle's log book. On lower settings there are less, probably around 7 and 5.
And yes, this is the best level in any of the games I have played. Entire game is great, entire series is awesome, but this level just does it. You can buy stuff to easily eliminate the puppets, but even with them dead the atmosphere is still priceless, and you still find yourself thinking "did I get all of them? am I sure?"
@NeoTodesklingel xDD me too. I stand outside the door and thought: "Okay. Lets go! I can manage that..." and then after 5 minutes going around outside the cradle I finally went inside XD .. I was every minute expecting a zombie or something like that... I was really relieved that there was in the whole outside cradle no bad patient... but inside O__O... simply freaky XD
....I tried to find any other entrance in apart from that trapdoor. And then when I got in it was like "Ohhhh jesus what have I just got myself in for"; took me a while to get through that level, laughed out loud when I realised there were no enemies....until you turn the power back on......;)
lol.. shit. Ive only started playing this game for the first time im currently in the stonemarket clocktower, i have to break the clock or something... but now i know what to expect with this level... this music creeps me out ther better not be ghosts or anything... fuck tht lol.
There is a legend that some staff at PC Zone magazine could not finish this level as it was too much for them, I have played many many games and without doubt this in my opinion is the scariest level ever made for a game.
This was one scary place, and the music is the soul of this level. First time playing this was the best. Especially as you enter the next area of this cradle. Damn those spooky "shock" puppies. Thanks for upload!
This is not only my favorite Thief level throughout the entire series, next to "Return To The Haunted Cathedral" from Thief: Gold, but quite possibly the most terrifying level I've ever played, in any game.
Part that scared me the most? Right at the beginning, as you go up the spiral staircase on the left as you enter. As you go up (Keeping in mind, I was playing this level around 1am), you suddenly hear the sound of banging/crashing around in the attic. Scary shit right there.
For me it was when I walked into the main reception place and a shock puppy glided across the doorway in front of me, I was tempted to turn off the game right there.
@Lothar32 Agree! But have you ever tried Doom 3? It's full of scares like this one. (Albeit a little cheap--in that there's little effect in replay, since the game doesn't quite built on atmosphere.)
Respect for you, ZemplinTemplar. Personally, I think this is the scariest level of the whole Thief series. One of the geatest games I ever played. Glad to see another Slovak guy with taste for extraordinary game experiences. Hat off.
because I wasn't planning on sleeping tonight

Good luck making it through all 6 minutes and 9 seconds without getting freaked out.

Turning the sound off. Yep, that's what I did, and I noticed that the flickering lights weren't the same without that distinct "Crackling" sounds. But mainly it was the absence of the music and the metallic screeching of the generator. It just lost all of its atmosphere and magic.
TheSevenCamels 1 year ago
@TheSevenCamels My strategy exactly. Best thing was that when I was in the middle of the mission the save games glitched and all my new saves got deleted so I was stuck in the cradle forever.. Haha.
Good thing it got fixed and I played through it. It took 2 months though, I could make myself play the cradle like 2 times per a month until I needed some psychological counselling from sesame street and other children's songs & movies hahaha.

my favorite level evah!! I didn't really find it that scary only at the beginning when I didn't know what to expect and got frightened by all the comments on youtube xD awesome level, awesome game!
sunsetflower08 1 year ago
Hm, i just bought thief 3 again and just for 3 things:
1. Seeing the keeper guys fighting against city guards wehen theyre after you:)
2. Seeing the Hammerits fighting against undeads in the little fortress you get in midgame ( let them hunt you and then go down the stairs and watch them dying against theyre undead counterparts)
3. To play the cradle again, on expert, with nothing then some water arrows. I think it will be intense when you have no healing and no weapons but your dagger:)
3.

This and the haunted cathedral are THE most terrifying levels in game history,
I dont care what FEAR fans say, They obviously never played Theif
Raymondmcf 1 year ago
@Raymondmcf
i've played FEAR 2 and thief deadly shadows and in my opinion, thief is the most scary due to the environment of the game
SilentShibito 1 year ago
@SilentShibito Well thats mostly because in theif you dont have any guns and if whatever nasty limping rotting "Thing" happens to find you...
Most players dont make it out of that situation alive,
and atop of that Eidos did such an awesome job on the ambience that you literally think you will be found or killed at any second.

this level was my favorite, because i down one of the zombies things but didnt kill it. i then handed my friend the controller and told him to move down the hall, telling him that the thing is dead. the next thing that happens is my friend screaming as the zombie chased his ass up a ladder.

@domuka It was the Xbox version right? Well i hope it was as good as the PC one. Since Thief was usually a PC exclusive.

Theif my fave game :D
I can still remember this part of the game, music scared the shit outta me, espicially when your playing baked out your mind in the early hours of the morning.
This is really the only part of any video game ive found creepy and disturbing since ive been an adult, the music and everything else just sucks you into the atmosphere of the game.
Theif was a definite 10/10 in my books anyday

HaistaPaska92 1 year ago
I'd loved this mission. Rather spooky and unsettling. BTW, does anyone have the soundtrack of Garret meeting inspector drept? I liked the music in that scene as well. It was rather short so a longer version of the soundtrack would be much appreciated. Cheers.
Finnbar01 1 year ago
Creepy as hell music, one of these days I will summon up the guts to actually play the level. (Whilst playing curosity got the better of me and I looked up 'play through' videos, baaaad idea)
(This is still creepy without the random shouts and yells chucked in)
I think this is one of the creepiest things I've ever seen, props to the developers for making such a scary level though, I think the little 'touches' like paitent notes add to it.
starrypawz 1 year ago
That's a place that you wouldn't like to live in... The atmosphere and the screams in this soundtrack from 0:59 to 1:11 makes you jump. But, I wouldn't know.. Never made it to this level. I'm stucked in Stonemarket Plaza and I need to stop the time by going to the city's clockwatch tower. If someone has some instructions for this please let me know!

Maybe, or maybe he was so ashamed of his horrible creation that he wanted that he wanted the plans to die with him. :)

Loa4EVER 2 years ago 3
Creepy doesn't necessarily mean bad (but only if you're playing a video game, or watching a movie or a TV show). I think it's great that they managed to make such a creepy atmosphere.

I like to play this game with realism and with the darkness really low. But when I came to this level, I put the brightness way up high.

Hotfoottfox 2 years ago 3
Well, try all three Thieves then... ;-) You can buy them pretty cheaplyand in a anthology boxset these days. All three have some downright scary (orat least creepy) levels, though the core ones are always about simple suspensful thieving among humans.
ZemplinTemplar 2 years ago
Thanks. I'll add them to my list of games to look for... It's a long list :)
Hotfoottfox 2 years ago
Careful though, the first two are hard to get working on modern machines. This one will almost certainly work. It's a shame because the original ones had some interesting gameplay elements (such as the fencing) that were removed rather than improved in favor of a more streamlined, automated gameplay (sorta like Splinter Cell, even though the point of Thief was to be first-person).
themasteriswatching 2 years ago
The third will work without any problems (if you have decent, modern enough hardware). Most of the anthology collections of all three installments include all the extensive patches for Thief I and II, that have been made for them to work specifically on new OS like XP and Vista.
ZemplinTemplar 2 years ago
the modern machine things is true, T2 to work on mine was a bitch, the dark engine cant cope with a multi core processor, only way round it is change the affinty of your processor b4 u start playing
sokarofnaytu 2 years ago
Well, T1 and T2 work flawlessly on my 2 years old notebook (haven't tried installing them on my tabletop PC yet).
ZemplinTemplar 2 years ago
Well, when I first time started this level, I was just like - uhm well, there should be zombies probably, let's crush them!:D
But the more I was proceeding through the level then without any enemies, the more I was feeling that something is not good... :D And when I suddenly heard the door banging, I just pressed "exit" button!
And the my nightmare has begun!:D
I don't remember when I was so freaked out by any other game level)))
And inspired...

Gedren84 2 years ago 2
its a interesting level...there are only like 4 enemies throughout it yet it is on of the longest and scariest levels in the game! i myself have completed and am making a walkthrough of the whole game, i cant wait to make the one for this!
Th3PinkNinj4 2 years ago
There are tons of enemies haha. I mostly remember it on expert though because that's the last difficulty I played it on. There were probably more like 20-25 puppets on that setting, plus the memories of the staff.
themasteriswatching 2 years ago
Pretty sure there are 9 puppets on expert setting: all of the patients mentioned in the Cradle's log book. On lower settings there are less, probably around 7 and 5.
And yes, this is the best level in any of the games I have played. Entire game is great, entire series is awesome, but this level just does it. You can buy stuff to easily eliminate the puppets, but even with them dead the atmosphere is still priceless, and you still find yourself thinking "did I get all of them? am I sure?"
ellmunzai 2 years ago 3
@Th3PinkNinj4 9 puppets and almost a dozen and a half(or smth.) of ghost-staff, to be precise))

This Level was more like a Horror Game like F.E.A.R. instead of "Thief" ...
And i guess even F.E.A.R. 1 and 2 didn't scare me like that Level in Thief 3 did...

SandrachenGaara 11 months ago 2
....I tried to find any other entrance in apart from that trapdoor. And then when I got in it was like "Ohhhh jesus what have I just got myself in for"; took me a while to get through that level, laughed out loud when I realised there were no enemies....until you turn the power back on......;)

chinkashh 2 years ago 2
This is not only my favorite Thief level throughout the entire series, next to "Return To The Haunted Cathedral" from Thief: Gold, but quite possibly the most terrifying level I've ever played, in any game.
Part that scared me the most? Right at the beginning, as you go up the spiral staircase on the left as you enter. As you go up (Keeping in mind, I was playing this level around 1am), you suddenly hear the sound of banging/crashing around in the attic. Scary shit right there.
Lothar32 2 years ago 25
Yes, that's certainly one of the most disturbing events in the level...
ZemplinTemplar 2 years ago
For me it was when I walked into the main reception place and a shock puppy glided across the doorway in front of me, I was tempted to turn off the game right there.
AshitakaNakagawa 2 years ago 4
@Lothar32 Agree! But have you ever tried Doom 3? It's full of scares like this one. (Albeit a little cheap--in that there's little effect in replay, since the game doesn't quite built on atmosphere.)
