At 4:03 the bass is the one making that noise. He uses a bass whammy, hammers the notes, and swells the volume at the same time. Just thought I'd point that out since you decided to proclaim this is the most accurate version available.
I love your Day of the Baphomets solo cover and you're a very good bassist, but you should stop being so close minded when it comes to using a pick. You can get a lot more versatility out of your playing if you are good with both your fingers and a pick.
@Inthedeadofknight Thank you for your feedback, yeah, I know he uses the whammy in that part, unfortunately, i had no pedal by the time i made that video. Also, I found the use of the pick a bit uncomfortable, but ive been experimenting a lot with picks recently, and use them for some riffs. This song though, is much more natural to play with the fingers =)
Thank you for watching and commenting =)
(also, for everyone: I'M SORRY GUYS, I HAVE NO TABS AVAILABLE, I FORMATTED MY LAPTOP =/ )
Yeah I know what you mean, it took me awhile to get comfortable with a pick too but now I find it good for mixing in muted notes with the rhythms and the sound is a lot more crisp which can be useful.
I agree about this song being natural feeling to play with fingers because the rhythm flows so good but I just think it's impossible to get anywhere close to his tone without a pick (and a Wal bass haha).
i think its an effects peddle/box people :P yes. bassists have them too. its amazing isnt it :O i think the tone suits the song pretty much. a nice personal touch. good cover man (y)
or i could be wrong and it could be bad recording but i like it
...its not that I think ur playing it wrong or anything but that sound don't give the song much justice. I had a small sound problem w/ my amp until i tweeked it a bit. try to do something about that...
i made some tabs for the other bass video i uploaded for Day of the Baphomets, from the mars volta, because it is a tough song. I recently formatted my laptop so i no longer have those tabs... sorry guys
I dont like the weird tone with whatever effect you are using, and if you are not gonna use a pick, why use a pedal to get that tone, why not just use your fingers, give it a different flavor, Im not saying Tool MUST be picked, but it was good, one of the best non-picked Schism covers. 5 stars.
There's nothing wrong with using a pick. It just gives you a different sound, sharper and with more attack. I personally don't use a pick, but there's nothing wrong with using one.

Use a pick for the entire song if you want Justin's sound.
walruswaspaul123 3 years ago
I play bass and I know justin uses a pick, but it makes it sound raspy, it sounds much better with your fingers but thats my opinion.

Its ultimitly up to you if you want to play with a pick, but you will sound more toolesque if you use a pick.

i play schism without pick, too :)
mrmorphium 4 years ago
It's Much easier to play without a pick but your amp needs the treble to back up the effect created by using a pick

Good job, but it's been summed up really well by TOOLbassplayer. If you're gonna play Tool, use a pick. It's designed to be played with a pick.

i hate fucking poeple like you thinking that using a pick is cheating ... some song have to play with fingers and other with pick ...
1tom8delonge2 4 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
that is so awesome! dude dont listen to that guy, using a pick is basically cheating in bass. u get a cleaner sound when u dont use a pick

There's nothing wrong with using a pick. It just gives you a different sound, sharper and with more attack. I personally don't use a pick, but there's nothing wrong with using one.
