and had Mo hit all her events she beats them all, including, Lilia. And you are also totally wrong Dawes had the highest score in the team competition. She had a lower combined compulsory and optional score than Podkopayeva, Miller, and Kochetkova. And the highest optional score in the team competition was not Dawes, it was Simona Amanar.
This was an extremely well-done routine. I give Dom full marks on this, even considering Lilia P. of Ukraine. I think Dom could have taken anybody at this time. And I stand by this statement forever.
Is it me, or does it seem like Dom did everything backwards??? Like her splits and leaps. She did a left split and everyone else on the US team did a right-legged split. Even her leaps were with different legs.
@Mikizzle15 Yes, she is more flexible on her left side. Shannon is the same way, too. They even use the same compulsory beam side entry, while the other girls use the other end.
She tired so hard to "sell" the routine throwing her head back and projecting to the audience, but the judges didn't buy it and only gave her a score in the 9.7's. Real artistry/expression takes years to master. She did a decent job though.
As far the AA goes, LP was ending on her strongest event whereas Dawes/Miller were up on VT. Even if they hadn't fallen, I don't think Miller could have gotten it done on vault. Dawes had an outside shot. I think LP would have won regardless.
i think LP would have won cuz she was consistant even though i don't particularly like her beam and bars routine. if it came down to everyone hitting their routine mo huilan would have won. seein how the judges seem willing to hand out a 10 for mo's beam routine. she took a big step/hop backwards onher dismount and she still got a 9.8
Not really... maybe for the Romanians? The top scores on FX for compulsory was 9.8+ from Lilia Podkopayeva and Kerri Strug. A bunch of other Americans and Russians got mid 9.7's.
As much as I love Dominique Moceanu's gymnastics, she just doesn't compare to Lilia Podkopayeva in this floor compulsory. Maybe it's the way it's filmed, but the way she keeps looking up just doesn't do it for me.
totally agree with you....very 14yr old ish.....or Karolyish'........one or the other, 4 yrs seperated her and Podkopayeva, but this looked like a lifetime watching this!having said that are there any US gymnasts that had any artistic expression @ Atlanta to compete with LP?
Well, no, because then they might've won the AA wouldnt they :-D......
Nobody compared to LP, and thats why she won, but I would say few US gymnasts have been great artists.... I liked Courtney McCool alot though in that respect....
Moceanu does hold her head so far back too much of the time, but shes so cute you've just gotta love her own charm and finish on everything.
Part of the reason why none of the US gymnasts won the AA that year is because they had uncharacteristic falls during that part of the competition. THAT had nothing to do with whether or not they were artistic enough to win. Perhaps you should actually know what happened in the meet before you make comments like that.
And for the record, I was glad Lilia won and absolutely idolized her. I just wish she would have won with ALL of the "favorites" being flawless, rather than how she did.
agreed. Shannon and Dominique Dawes were going head to head for first until they both messed up on floor and Moceanu blew it on beam....all uncharacteristic for all three. I don't think Lilia would have won or it would have been close if the US girls were on their game that night.
@luvhelmet dream on fool. Shannon cant outscore Lilia on any event except bars. Dawes cant outscore on any event other than bars and maybe beam if Lilia is off. Moceanu probably cant outscore her on any event period, beam if she is lucky maybe. Lilia is the only one who could score 9.9 range on floor, the Americans were all mediocre on vault even at their best, Moceanu and Miller were weaker on bars. If everyone had hit Mo would have won with Lilia 2nd, probably Amanar 3rd.
@turckhater none of the Americans would have won the AA that year even if they had hit. Lilia didnt even do her best but she still did well enough none of the Americans would have beaten her. Miller cant outscore Lilia on anything except beam, Dawes cant on anything but bars and maybe beam if Lilia is off, Moceanu cant on any event really. And if everyone had hit in the AA none of the Americans would have even medaled. The top 3 would have been Mo, Lilia, and probably Amanar.

@raichmaneuvers wow dude did you forget that dawes and shannon were one and two halfway through respectively. and as bad as you say americans were on vault both dawes and miller were in the vault final. actually dominique dawes had the highest all around in team competition, i remember them showing that stat before the ind. all around started. it wasnt artistry or difficulty it was nerves on floor that did them in. i luv lilia she brought floor to another level. but those are the facts dude.
@bojohns77 no I didnt forget that. Dawes was 1st and Miller was tied for 2nd with Kochetkova, not 2nd alone. The reason those were the top 3 is they all started on bars. The favorites Lilia and Mo started on vault. Had everyone started on vault Miller, Dina, and Dawes would have been behind Lilia and Mo the entire final. In the last rotation Lilia scored a 9.887 on floor which would have blown her past the mid 9.7s Miller and Dawes were capable of on vault.
between her and shannon, I really think that this U.S. team isn't as overrated as people say.... Both of their FX and BB complusory routines are EXQUISITE gymnastics. I can't believe she had this amplitude and refinement in her dance elements at this young age. What a stunningly talented gymnast....
They only added that rule after the 1996 Olympics, so it did not apply at the time of the 1996 gymnastic competitions. It also did not apply in 1998 for the figure skating, for reasons I have not been able to discover, as proven by Tara Lipinski's gold medal in women's figure skating at age fifteen.
It was important to try and show some personality out there in these compulsories to help the gymnast stand out from all the others and Dominique certainly succeeded. Silivas was a master at it. I think this particular compulsory fx was perfect for Lilia Podpokayeva who truly loves the ballet and it showed.
she's almost too showy in this routine, I know you're supposed to be and that's the way the coaches trained her but it looks forced, not natural, could be toned down a little other than that her dance and skills are flawless

The fouetté hold was good (probably the best--even podkopoyava didn't hold it) but too much gratuitous throwing back of the head--looks way too forced and uncontrolled. Plus she's got crow's feet for hand carriage and placement. Exquisite? Hardly.
