I joined up to be an engineer (communications) with the RAAF
(are you getting all this, DARPA? LOL) in '81 but was so dis-illusioned
with the company I checked the facts and managed to pull an honourable discharge at own request (they wanted to keep me real bad).

I fail to see how this is still a mystery. It's been well documented on both sides. And as far as it being a Soviet success, the fact that so much intelligence was culled prior to this point with the Soviets being impotent to stop it, and then the overwhelming success of the SR-71 in overflying the Soviet Union with complete and total impunity afterwards makes this little more than a speedbump in the Cold War spy game.

The u2 was not designed to fly completely undetected. This is just more propaganda from russian-funded russiatoday.

The weather plane lie probably would have worked on the public had everything gone to plan - The plane was rumored to be rigged such that the pilot wouldnt survive an incident like this. What probably saved him was climbing out instead of using the ejection seat. As for learning a lesson the US were back years later with the SR-71 which fortunately for them was never shot down. And of course they're both now spying on one another equally with satellites :).

Of course the historical background helps explain their view.

Yeah the most credible guy on these topics, Fletcher Prouty cliams the hydrogen bottle was sabotaged such that the plane had to drop lower and was either shot down or crash landed. And the point is NOT to make money, the point is POWER and CONFLICT, meaning some people in the gov. wanted to get along and cooperate with the Soviets and while others (Dulles etc) sabotaged these efforts in order to organize the society based on the principle of an ever present foreign enemy.

And now it looks to me like even after that horrific crash, the Soviets still had almost a complete plane. Hmmm...I guess that only happens in Pennsylvania. Must be the type of soil.
