The copyright on "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" lapsed into the public domain years ago and there are plenty of dollar store dupes floating around now on video tape and DVD or downloaded for free without question because of its Creative Commons license:
@MAcheatel25 I know what you mean about this film . The iconic motif of a book opening at the start of a film has been used again and again. Also in our YouTube film about Hameln: Legendary Hameln, Fairytale Weser Mountains (english)
Very glad to have heard from the film "family".
Come visit us in Hameln, we can't wait to enchant you!
My uncle was the producer/writer of this movie & my aunt was Kay Starr. I use to watch it all the time as a child when they showed it on TV. When they stopped showing it on TV I thought that I would never see it again! I was listening to the soundtrack & just happened to look it up on IMDB.That was how I found it on YouTube. This movie was such a cherished part of my childhood and I am ecstatic that I found it again. My Uncle would be thrilled that so many of you still enjoy his movie Thank You
@MAcheatel25 Thank you for sharing this about your Uncle! Yes such a a great film made for tele and in technicolour! Such great performances and songs! :)
In the 1960's, our elementary school would show movies on Saturdays, where we could come, watch the movie, have popcorn, and socialize. I remember seeing this movie at such an event. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
@TheCarole63 Thank you so much for the dear comments,Yes it is a worthy film even 54 years after it was made to a whole new audience and some of us who enjoy a nostalgic revisit, your most kind and I agree with you both about Van so much he was so fine!
@cathytreks I admire Mr. Johnson's body of work - a legacy. His wide range of work appears critically underappreciated. So this summer devoted on reading and watching Van.
@TheCarole63 Glad you feel that way about Van too!, I uploaded his bittersweet romantic movie " The Last Time I saw Paris here in my uploads? it is a really good movie with Elizabeth Taylor as his co-star! I love his films too.
Thanks for talking its nice to know other Van Johnson fans, and I was planning to post more this year, including a public domain version of Brigadoon he did with Gene Kelly and Cyd Charis! :)
@cathytreks The Last Time I Saw Paris is the last MGM Van Johnson movie. I enjoyed the interaction between Van and Elizabeth. Donna Reed certainly emoted anger in subtle gestures throughout. I viewed Van Johnson interview recently and he said the censorship ruined the final cut. His bid for an Oscar for this role ended when MGM downsized...thank you again for keeping Mr. Johnson's work alive for new audiences!!!
I was the pied piper when my class did this play like 5 years ago, oh the nostalgia. :')

I've loved this movie since I was a kid, sad nobody else I know has ever heard of it. Johnson is a lovable scoundrel as the Piper.

I played this for my 6-year old granddaughter recently and the clip of Lucy and Van dancing together. She loved both! Van has a new fan!
