This song has words in it which come from the poems and writings of St John of The Cross. Dark night of the soul is a metaphor used to describe a phase in a person's spiritual life, marked by a sense of loneliness and desolation. His poem narrates the journey of the soul from its bodily home to its union with God. The journey occurs during the night, which represents the hardships and difficulties the soul meets in detachment from the world and reaching the light of God
True. To elaborate on andrea's post, the song is metaphorical of the darkness and loneliness one endures when spiritually transforming from their familiar corporeal existence to a spiritual existence -- one where she and the divine become one in each other. The sense of forlornness overwhelmes her like the night because she's left behind all that she'd known and been on that lonely quest to meet with her "lover".
A Jamieson Thought & Rift: "The Wind, the Spirit within my Hand": "Gently, lovingly the wind, the spirit within my hand, fills my lungs as the breath that gives life to each borne creation brings forth its "light and love" to forever cast away the "Dark Night of each & every Soul".
Its beautiful, too bad that the property of thing is so very poorly placed. If I were placing this on youtube and "owned" it - I would honour the song and singer by placing that in a less obtrusive position - if at all. Apart from that, its a Divine Song.
this was written by St. John of the Cross a catholic saint. This is the real face of catholicism, sadly hidden by the sins of some of its members. But this is what we are called to be.
A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E!
Thank God for Loreena..I live in Greece my dearest Loreena...i was in your concert last year...I will never IN MY LIFE forget the atmosphere in that concert of yours..we were ALL out of this world...PLANET EARTH IS SO LUCKY TO HAVE YOU LOREENA!! WE LOVE YOU HERE IN ATHENS GREECE!!!!
She has an otherworldly beauty, both in her art and her person. It's not contrived or forced, but seems to come naturally. That's a rare thing in these days of commercialization and pretentiousness. Thank God.
Actually I think Loreena could make some beautiful songs out of some of Tupac's poetry. He was an extremely gifted individual, not just a rapper, but a poet as well. Check out "The Rose That Grew From Concrete".
Maybe flandrian 15 should go back to listening to marilyn manson or tupac obscure.I wonder if tonedeafness has a genetic prominance in some familial lines. Not intending to be intentionally mean spirited, but I just subscribe to the concept of "If you cant say anything nice than dont say anything at all".
San Juan de la Cruz was a Spanish mistic,Carmelite friar and he is considered one of the foremost poets in the spanish language. "La noche oscura del alma " is one of his finest work. This translation is very beautiful and poetic one and the music is gorgeous. I am glad that Loreena McKennitt has set this poem to music. Thank you
I haven't hear anyone anything bad about Loreena. It's impossible! I love reading all the loving comments about her and her music, I feel the same. She makes the world a sweet place to live. My eternal gratitude goes to her.
Desenganme! Disculpen la falta de acentos y marcas.
Bunjeefreefall is correct. That is what the song is about. What is even more extraordinary is that the lyrics of this song were written in Spain in the 16th century, by a monk named St. John of the Cross and set to music in the 20th century by Loreena McKinnett 500 years later. I happened to be reading St. John and took an interest in Loreena McKinnett and came upon this song at the same time. Perhaps it was a cooincidence, but I think it was not.
Beautiful, beautiful performance of this. Thanks to Quinlan Road for putting this up - Any possibility of posting advance notice of Loreena tours to the UK up here so we can book tickets? Thanks again, lovely people. :)
What is so unusual about this song, aside from the sheer beauty of the music, is that this is a love story between an individual and GOD. Loreena's adaptataion is nothing less than spectacular. Thank you for such a deeply moving piece.
Have you ever heard a deeper song than this one? Have you ever seen more artistic integrity than Loreena's?
A kind of artist hard to find on these days, but Loreena shines among those who claim fame and wealth, because she's not pretentious with her music, she's simply honest and genuine. That's what art is all about...
@felybj the lyrics are from a poem written by a Christian Saint and Mystic called Saint John of the Cross.... he is talking about how the soul escapes the world and the body to meet "the One whom I love" which is Christ...
HI Darling!!! I agree with you, as usual!!! This song always reminds me of one special Samhain I shared with a very special spirit, Loreena captured the evening perfectly. My love to you and Loreena!!!

Correction, it is the love story and prayer from a Monk to his God.
