I must say, this project is indeed, quite interesting, and very useful for third world children, as it seems generally user friendly.
Say, lightweight OS? I have read that Sugar is a Linux distro. Great choice, OLPC! Now we don't have to swallow that nightmare called Microsoft Windows.
I must say, after all I've seen, I hope I could test one of these someday.
You're 14. By the time you were twelve, I'm absolutely positive, you'd already been using computers.
The XO laptop was not only designed from the ground up to be for people with ZERO computer experience, but even for people who don't know what a computer looks like, or what they're supposed to do.
That is *NOT* any Linux distro I've ever heard of.
Linux is *NOT* easy, and contrary to what people say, not intuitive.
You have to understand that not all kids have your background.
I never said *YOU* don't know what you're talking about regarding Linux/Unix platforms.
I said PEOPLE WHO THINK COMPUTERS CONJURE DEMON "MAJIK" MIGHT BE CONFUSED.
If you can't understand the difference, have a nice day.
P.S. All the "*sighs*"? Its because you're not making unbiased, impartial points. You're assuming everyone knows as much about computers are you do, and when you're older you'll understand how stupid that makes you sound.

Pre-production model or not, You could have bought your son an OLPC and given this one to a child in Nigeria. I can't believe you brought one back that had been shipped over there. Whatever the Nigerian government thinks about the OLPC, it is not best use of resources for you to take one to the UK. I know you were given it, but I would've have to give it to a local.
People have a right to do what they want with their money. The great thing about charity is that it's by choice; if you want to shell out $200 to get some Nigerian kid a laptop, great for you, but you have no right to criticize the spending of others simply because you don't have the funding to do so yourself.
What are you talking about? How do you knowI don't have the funding myself?! You have no idea about me or the charities I support. Actually I work in the charities sector and support several development charities that work in Africa.
I have one of those! Mine has tetris on it XD. Its fun. Anyways, I'm trying to figure out iToys, the video and picture thing is fun, but sometimes the internet stops working and I don't know how to fix it! T_T This kid has figured it out more than me...thats just sad...
Awesome. Totally awesome. Especially the part about his new friends who speak funny English. If there's anything that really gets me excited about the G1G1 and OLPC its that you'll have kids becoming friends across huge economic and cultural divides, sharing ideas, learning stuff, and generally having a great time.
smart kid - nice video! He's equally enthusiastic about figuring out how the XO works and about sharing the knowledge. That's (I think) what this project is about!
Thanks!I think you've hit the nail on the head. he's not that well-versed in the use of computers but found out all sorts of stuff very quickly about the XO.
Wait, you went to Nigeria, where the laptop is being distributed to children, and brought it back to the UK? With all due respect, was that really the wisest decision?
Let me explain. I visited the OLPC project which was being tested at one school in Nigeria. The organisers out there had spares - not final production models but earlier versons - and gave me one specifically to give to my 9 year old. So this was not depriving a local child. The trial there is nearing an end - what they most need is a commitment from their goivernmenmt to invest in taking the XO to more schools. But the government still isn't convinced that it's the best use of resources.
Hey Ruskin147, good to know. I know it's stupid but I kinda had the same thought as TheGreatSparky. Maybe you should put the above explanation in the description of your video?
Not sure - Rufus hasn't bothered with that and I will struggle to prize the XO from his grasp to have a look. But I do believe that is possible. Best to go to the OLPC wiki to check that kind of stuff.

gnome, kde, and xfce are **NOT** linux environments!!! they are unix environments and yes, so is sugar. that is why you can install it on linux.
I wish the spent some more time on the design too. Looks like part of a high chair with plastic pieces coming off the top.
Besides, what drunken idiot would want their 6 year-old kid talking to people all over the world?
so *SIGHSIGH* mr. sigh :p

OK, fist of all, I believe the word you were looking for was magick (yes, I know it is spelled differently than magic)
second, I am "(not) making unba(i)sed, impartial points"? (damn, pretty sure I was)
third, I was just kidding >=]
so please also have a nice day.

it's 400$ but considering a good Dell laptop is like 2000$, why bother or complain???
Marriland99 3 years ago
Well, a VERY good Dell notebook is $2,000, and it's not $400 for one, but $200.
$400 gives one to someone and you get one.
