I could've sworn that those casters would've caused a sudden unwanted stop. Awesome design!
I have a little manual sport and hit a dip just big enough for me to catch my footplate on and ended up going ass over teakettle. Good news I was fine... Bad news, it was in front of a pizza parlor and the most of the customers came out to see if I was alright. Funny thing was the first guy out there offered his hand to help me up. Nice guy, not too bright but nice.
This chair is completely badass, I have been trying to find a power chair that would fit me (more my personality) and the current options I do not like. But this chair is exactly the type of chair I want and need; to the Tee. You keep up the production tests on this thing and you let me know when it might be available in the states.
Distance capability is very subjective (depends upon surface, slopes, speeds, etc) and has not been tested as we are currently designing and building a new controller but after a lot of testing of curent test machine, we didn't need to recharge the pack in weeks! Once we have a new system, we'll collect performance data.
How much breaks down? Has anyone done it and loaded it alone? I am curious as to how long the battery lasts, or how far it takes you on a single charge.
I would give up my huge bulky Pronto and my Quickie for one of those!
Appreciate such comments from a fellow EV designer - I use AutoCad and Inventor. The castors have very little weight on them, even less with weight shift, and none with full recline. Fun to drive that's for sure...Colin
Wow! I would've gotten stuck in the sand, and would've turned over on the cross-slopes. How high a curb can it climb? It sure outdoes my Jazzy 610! Love the way it can turn in such small, crowded places! I have to have a big space to turn around. Also love the way it reclines, for a break! Someone who isn't familiar with power chairs, or wheelchairs in general, isn't going to realize how unusual this chair is...let me tell you, most chairs can't handle steep slopes like this one. Amazing chair!
Most standard wheelchairs claim that the heavy batteries make them more stable. May be so in static tilt tests, but in dynamic testing, we found the inertia of an almost tip was worse with heavy Arrow and it couldn't stay on side slope but just rolled downhill once top rear wheel lost traction.
For this prototype, 12 kph but we are currently developing a new motor system that should have a top peed of 14kph from testing. Still being developed and final speed yet to be determined. Will need to be limited to legal speed for most countries of 10kph by controller programming.
This prototype weighs 44kg (including battery) and so is easy to pick up, transport and uses less energy to propell it. Working on new commercial version now with new hub motors, controller and Lithium battery for even better performance.
Version 2 used a cut down and modified Quickie TNT and version 3 used a standard unmodified TiLite TRA. My design is a power unit that replaces the rear 24" wheels with a three wheel power unit that should be adaptable to a number of sports chair designs. That way your sports chair can become a full joystick controlled power chair and revert to manual at any time by disconnecting from the power unit and plugging in 24" wheels. See the COOL Mobility website for detail photos.
This is an amazing chair. The music made me watch this video at least 10 times. Must buy! the music that is. Can anyone help me find out who the artist is especially the second half of the video? And if me, my friends or family are ever in need of a wheelchair I will definately buy one.
This looks fantastic and a great idea for a large market of users. I work with power chairs and I could see our clients who would definately use this. Few questions.....what kind of batteries... what kind of motors... is it programmable... most of our chairs are 300+ lbs. I think this chair would gear more towards para's. Again, awesome.
Batteries in this version are NiMH. Motors are prototype brushless rare earth prototype motors inside the hubs. Yes it uses a standard control system (5 x programs) or another prototype control (only one profile). Market for this will be aimed at under 100kg (200 lbs). It is not intended to be a chair for everyone - one chair can't be suitable for all needs. This is aimed at a niche market who can handle its performance.
Hey man from someone who has been in a power chair my whole life, awesome chair! I was just wondering what the top speed(or potential top speed) of your chair is and if you think you could adapt your design to make it like a manual sports chair, with camber, etc? As you can see from my video, I am playing wheelchair tennis in an "everyday" power wheelchair. Just curious if you thought your chair might be better, or could be adapted, to be better for a "sports" power chair.
Top speed is currently 10 kph (6 mph) (the legal limit), but driving the chair is very stable and cruising without problems or feeling of being on the edge. Camber puts a huge increase on any axle or gearbox so would not be wise or of much benefit. Our chair could be used in sports like tennis quite well as it turns really easily. Great vid of your tennis.
active quad here-finally a chair the size of a chair and not a house, very agile, the 3rd wheel is great, impressive power...fast as hell too, amazing stability...i hope to get this chair when my shoulders go or sooner..........awesome job
Really great. I hope to have one of this someday. It's not a robotlike wheelchair as many that I'v seen but functionally I think this kick ass. I will be in contact (from Perú).
I'm a T6 (17 years in) and don't currently use a power chair, nor do I anticipate the need anytime soon (knock knock knock), but I would really consider this as an option once it's on the market. I'm keeping my eyes on you.
Yes you do need some trunk movement and trunk muscles would be anadvvantage for radical decents but I'm a complete C6 quad (with not trunk muscle function)and by hanging on with one arm hooked most movements, including curb jumps are possible with minimal practice. Shoulder straps may be needed if you want to go radical.
I noticed the chair is just a TiLite TR or TRa, is this going to be made as a module type thing that can attach to a manual chair or will it be an all or nothing package?
My hope is to have a version that can be adapted to many suitable rigid frames as a power module, allowing easy reversion at any time back to the unchanged manual form.
Initially we will probably be building a dedicated version that due to motor sizes may need to be a dedicated power wheelchair package. The US funding models preclude a manual and electric chair as it does not fit their funding schemes.
As an electric wheelchair user I love this - compact, small, independent wheel springs for bumps etc. What would make it perfect would be a seat that goes up and down for reaching high shelves! Gues we can't have everything!!!
Still searching for the best motors and battery solution for a commercial version and then consolidating potential manufacturing. Still searching to improve this chair and make as functional as possible and leading edge technology. All takes time and due diligence. See COOL Mobility website for progress.
Hi simon, I don't use an electric yet but I designed one that I will be willing to use, when I need to. I'm a Complete C6 quad so that day will come. Keep up your educational vids.

it off roads really nice with those small front wheels.. is there any application for 26inch wheels on a zra frame? does the seat width matter too?
