I DID NOT LIKE DeVitos insipid remark when he said that the DeLorean "Entrapment" defense was ridiculous. DeVito go "F" yourself. When DeLorean wanted to locate in Belfast , right before production started , the Government hit him with unbelieveable fees that were NOT in his original agreement with them. ANYway--The FBI during this time was running amuck. When they bullied Larry Flint ,Flint helped DeLorean by showing the actual FBI sting tapes on DeLorean. Look'em up.

I am halfway through De Lorean's "On a Clear Day You Can See General Motors", and I must say, this man was brilliant, even if the DMC-12 was a dog in it's final form.
You were a visionary in the automotive world, Mr. De Lorean. You are sorely missed by those that knew of your engineering and marketing brilliance.
Seriously, read the book. This man was a damned genius, surrounded by dumbasses.
I had a mint condition Delorean from 1998 to 2000...I became bored with it after the novelty of "getting it" wore off. Plus, I had to clean it before taking it out...always. Got it at PJGrady in LI ny for 21,000, sold it for 25,000. Vin # 010296 (the initial #'s are the same for all deloreans) Very fun car, a head turner, a jerk magnet (some people made fun of it), but a bitch to keep clean.
Well before the DeLorean car John was head of Pontiac - the thing being was that while he was at Pontiac it was making a profit, and it came out with some interesting developments - of course the GTO was one, however there was also the 4-cylinder rope drive with IRS Pontiac Tempest, an OHC 6-cylinder engine and the downsizing of the Grand Prix, giving a mini-Cadillac look, which resulted in it receiving a surge in sales...
Before the trial began, the FBI's videotape of the sting was leaked to the media by Hustler Magazine publisher Larry Flynt. In the videos, when arresting DeLorean, the FBI is shown asking him whether he would rather defend himself or have "his daughter's head smashed in."[13] This prompted the judge to postpone the trial until the following year because of undue bias from the leaked tape.
does anyone know where I can find / get this documentary???? I'd love to see it. I've read DeLorean's autobio., and his book "On A Clear Day You can See General Motors" and was glued to them while doing so. 2 great reads.
His attorny asked on agent if John knew there were going to be drugs in the hotel? NO Did he buy any drugs? NO Did he leave with any drugs? NO They have it on video that they threatend his life and his families life and put his daughters head in a box if he didnt coaperate. Get your facts right before you start talking. It's people like you that gave John DeLorean and his car a bad name.

Afraid the DeLorean was a piece of crap but compared to the other American cars it was probably good. Watch top gear and catch up with the rest of the world before you give such a parochial opinion DMCSerenity. DeLorean only cared about the image like all U.S. cars, all show, no go.
I am afraid I am cought up with the rest of the world. What experience do you have with the DeLorean to make such comment's? I have not given my opinion I have only given facts. You on the otherhand are giving an openion based on bias media "Top Gear" for an example. DeLorean did care about image but also wanted a vehicle that would last and not break down like todays disposable cars
It's just a shame that he used the PVR engine for his cars. It's among the worst designs Volvo has ever put into its own vehicles. They were prone to pre-mature camshaft wear if not oiled religiously and gave the company a bad name in the late 70s, mainly with the 262C which was a complete over-priced disaster. I'm more of a Volvo enthusiast, despite what my username may lead you to believe, but did this mechanical problem exist in DeLoreans as well?
It was a bad engine, chosen by Deloreran for reasons of availability (the pug 604 for which it was designed was a huge flop) and the fact it was already emissions certified for the USA. with all the anti smog gear it was too strangled for a sports car tho
Considerably less than an average car. Money was going to the IRA? LOL were you involved in this? How do you know this? That is all hear say you have no proof, that is a lie and a joke. When John DeLorean was in trial for "drug trafficking" it's funny to note that there were a lot of FBI agents that were testifying for DeLorean that he was set up.
If you see one in bad shape today you have to relize the car is 27ys old and any car that has not been well maintained is going to have problems. I also don't know why ou say that it is prone to leak with the doors. I have never had mine leak or any other owners unless the 27 yr old weather seals need replaced. The gull wing doors actually hep prevent any water or rain coming into the car than a conventional door and need only 14" of space to open.
First off the car was marketed for the US and not for Europe. The DeLorean was a car built to last that had a 25 r warrenty on the stainless and John as well as the engineers new it would last well over 50 yrs. The car is a reliable economical vehihicle good on gas and more reliable than a new Labo. I know many D's that have well over 300k miles on them and used as daily drivers.
StuPadazzo, I wasn't trying to badmouth the car, it's just that DeLorean tried to make out that it would be a top seller in Europe, which was crazy given the different criteria America has. It was a great looker, so was the '73 firebird IMHO. Just not viable from a European point of view. The gull-wing doors of the DL couldn't cope with the British weather, more than a few Jags suffered in the same way. Why not post a video of your DL, it'd be great to see one that's being used on the road.
Danny, you're one of my all time heroes so I truly hate to disagree with you but there was an awful lot more to the DeLorean car story than you make out. The car was awful. It let in water, it was painfully slow and ridiculously thirsty. It had no future even though it looked great. Money was going to IRA. Colin Chapman died over it, officially heart attack, most think suicide because he was caught up in something he considered illegal.
I'm not trying to be an ass here but I bought my 81' DeLorean 12 years ago from the original owner with only 19K on it. It has never once let water in from anywhere EVER; although it's not the fastest car in the world, it's FAR from being slow, mine tips in at just under 130 mph (I have DMC Houston's 170 speed-o) and it get's there fairly quickly; and if I BEAT on my DeLorean hard the worst gas mileage I've ever gotten was 20 MPG. And this also goes for the other four owners here in town too.
I don't kwo where you are getting your information from. But you need to do a little more reasearch on the car and not make comment that were derived from bias media. I have worked on many DeLoreans, Driven many DeLorean and seen amny DeLoreans and have talked with many people involved in the production of the car even John DeLorean himself.

Agree, not just reliability tho, I always thought the Delorean didn't have enough BALLS.
I mean this was meant to compete with porsche's.
i read some years ago about a supercharger conversion, and had this been std, i think this would've increased sales many fold.
schumacher500 2 years ago
Very true. Some power steering, bigger windows and reliable doors would have also been a good idea.
