Still a huge fan of the 6-30-85 and 9-18-87 SHAKEDOWNS, as sick SBDs of both are readily available for stream or for simple listening... not a huge fan of the quality of this SBD from the Barton hall "barn" heh heh heh... 5-8-77 sounded juuust a bit more "sonic", n'est ce pas? I'll always love Jerry's mastery of the Mutron envelope filter effect on his custom axe however, on Stranger, Fire on the Mountain, Shakedown, and of course Estimated Prophet... this set from '80 was one of my first tapes!
Check out 12/26/79 for an awesomer still Shakedown on archive dot org, if not available here. It's the jam towards the end that's wild -- really! (sounds like monkeys screeching, but within a great jazz improv)
Dude, two rows up, just past the drum circle, next to the bus. Yeah yeah, you'll start to see balloons everywhere, which are good. So just look for the girl in the leather top and swirly skirt. Yeah man, she has the best veggie burritoes and grilled cheese!
Hey man! Hurry back, cause I don't want to stand here all day waiting for your miracle, cause I already got mine!
@HONORB0nd The good ole' days! Many parking lots, didn't matter the city, state, it was all the same shakedown street. Drum circles carry the beat of the street, smiles around every corner. People that have come to share, if you have the slightest care.
Only thing I dont miss is the waiting on a miracle (not having a ticket for the show, walking in circles with finger in air by the shows gates, would bring a miracle, a ticket), though when it did come, it was grand!
Departure of Keith & Donna, and to a lesser extent the reintegration of Mickey Hart. killed the band. The Dead ceased to kill it around 1983. Too bad really.
I agree this might be a top 5 version of Shakedown. This is coming from a huge fan of the song. Honestly I think Shakedown was one of the few jam songs they did that actually had its best versions in the 1980's, specifically 1980-1984 has some SICK ass funky Shakedowns!
I have been listening to the Grateful Dead for 34 years, and went to several shows in the 70's and 80's. I still can't figure out what listening to the music of Grateful Dead has to do with drugs. In my mind, most of the comments here were either written by sheep or posers.
@Revvin people get wrapped up in the drugs associated with the culture of the dead. i mean they were in the merry band of pranksters movement, so the relationship is there. It's nice to hear a true fan that can dig the music without needing advocate drug use at the same time. its about the music
Its odd you find a cartoon invisible man offensive.
The cartoon is "Stagger Lee", and in this illustration, as featured on the album art, he is invisible. There just happens to be a black background here, either way Stagger Lee IS a pivotal character in African American folklore whom the grateful Dead play homage to in their aptly named ballad "Stagger Lee". You should read a book about the subject, a famous take on stagger lee is explored in "Invisible Man". Also listen to the song
@nauris705 You gotta tell me what part of this video is so offensive? It is some cartoon dude better known as the doo-dah man he has no color ,no race ,no religion so i think you are reading to deep into something that is not there.
This was my first show :) And the first real concert I ever went to. Stood in line all day to get right up close. I had just turned 16, and ...what can a say....it was a life changing event.

THE CARTOON IS OFFENSIVE

@nauris705 Offensive? That's just silly. If you're trying to imply it's racist, I would point out that you have to have skin to indicate a race.
