I did this once, and no one caught me, but I was killed an assassin and on him was a death note with my name on it sent by the Restoration Trainer. Collete is a bitch! She tried to kill me for stealing her Soul Gems. haha.

refreshment times for things like this is every 30 days, but there is a glitch around it to make ot be like 5 hours but i dont know it look it up

yes i know that you get them anyway after becoming archmage, however i would rather have the soul gems sooner than later

***MAJOR SPOILER***

After completing the final college quest you get the arch mages quarter key and it becomes yours anyway lol, so you could easily have completed the quest line and saved yourself the bother of stealing.

LITTLE TIP: when you put a pot or any hollow item on a NPC's head, so they can't see you, then you can steal without them noticing. Like this so ppl who don't know it can see it :P. Dunno if it still works btw :P

The Dwemer ruin south of Riften has plenty of mobs that drop soul gems, though they're empty.

@Uaticker yep about every 20 days, but there are many different spawn points of the items in similar place in the college, like in the archmage quaters there are shelves and case anfd chests that all have gems in , they respawn at different times, so there is a constant load of gems
